Join nationally recognized teaching artist Lully Schwartz to try your hand painting master techniques. The experience and knowledge gained in creating small masterpieces will further the student’s ability to understand, control and create in oil paint and/or watercolor. Learning from the masters is an insightful method for advancing an artist’s talent.
A brief overview of European and American Masters will be followed by Lully’s demonstration on material use, under-painting and glazing. The atmosphere in which you will develop your work will correspond to the master’s studio experience for working in miniature. A special materials list will be provided and additional tools made available by Lully for use in the workshop. Note: Each artist will be given source material for the first painting and encouraged to paint an original miniature work of art for the second. To receive the optimal experience in this class artists sign up for both days.
Contact Lully Schwartz at info@lullyschwartz.com for more information or to sign up for this workshop. Note: workshop size is limited for the optimal learning experience. Four openings left and registration is taking place now.

Hi Joey!
Here’s my review of your “This Is Gloucester” DVD. I’ve watched it twice. First time was the day I received it in the mail. Since I’m your target audience I decided to watch it a second time with one of my BFF’s, Judy, who’s never been to Gloucester and has never seen the blog. Not being an FOB like myself, I figured she’d be able to provide the objective viewpoint that I lack since I’m a lover of Gloucester and a rah rah fan of GMG. I’m biased for sure.
Let me begin by saying that the DVD cover is really cool. Beth Swan has a great eye for design and did a fantastic job. Appealing right away. Beginning the DVD with “Gloucester at Dawn” and the beautiful music was a great way to set the tone and my friend Judy said she didn’t know Gloucester was such a beautiful place. BOOM!
I imagine that deciding what to include and what to leave out of the DVD from all the GMG material must have been the hardest part of making it. I don’t know how you managed to do it, but you wound up with a really well balanced presentation of the essence of Gloucester- the beauty of the place, the fishing industry, the history, festivals and the passionate people who call it home. A really great mix.
The only trouble I had with the DVD, and believe me I realize that this is totally personal (although Judy had the same reaction), was the appearance of the “Rare Golden Sea Robin”. I remember seeing it on the blog and it was bad enough looking at that thing on my laptop, but on my big TV screen? Yikes!! I can see how it might be a big deal to land one of these horrifying creatures but it’s a TERRIBLE thing to look at. Judy gasped, covered her eyes and I had to tell her when it was over so she could keep watching. Just when we were regaining our composure, THERE IT WAS AGAIN!!! It made an unannounced and unexpected second appearance after “The Back Shore” chapter!! At that moment Judy fled from the room and wouldn’t watch any more.
The people chapters (as opposed to the creature chapters) appealed to me the most. I enjoyed “Building the Greasy Pole Shrine” because of the obvious passion of the people involved in its construction, “Salting Herring At Cape Seafoods” because… well I don’t know, I just liked watching it… and the “St Joseph Novena” chapters that finished off the DVD were the best. The people who live in Gloucester truly love their city and it shows!
So there’s my review, Joey. It’s yours to do with as you please. Run it on the blog, trash it completely, edit it as you see fit, whatever. Oh, one more thing. I think an introduction by you at the very beginning would have been great.
Thanks a million for putting the DVD together! Linda
Shot with my trusty Sony NEX-5N.
BTW right now Amazon has a great deal on memory cards. For a 32GB Class 10 SD Card for only $19.99.
Considering Apple charges you an extra hundred dollars for a jump up from a 16GB iPad to a 32GB iPad, that’s a great deal.
Imagine that, SD card storage is THAT cheap that you can buy two times the amount of storage that comes on a stock iPad for less than $20. Anyway if you’re buying a camera it’s always good to have a couple extra SD cards so you can leave one in your computer to edit your photos off of and rotate in your spare to the camera so when you leave the house with the camera in a hurry you don’t pound yourself in the head when you get to that birthday party because you left the memory stick in the computer. I always rotate mine and have a stick in my computer and swap it out on the spot with the memory stick that was in the camera.
Anyway here’s the deal if you want one (they’re normally $32)-
Hi Joey,
I am sure you are inundated with windmill photos, but I took these this
evening (11.23). I only had my little point and shoot camera, but it did ok
capturing the windmill being built now. I thought it was great that they
have a stand with markers for people to use to sign the blades. Amazing to
get up close to one of the 45 meter blades. And to think this one is
smaller than the one at Varian.

Peggy Russell (POP Gallery), Kirstin Myers (of Downtown Gloucester), and Kat, the Star Clam Lady.
Stuffed Clams that we served tonight at my gallery, made by Kat, a passionate professional. Gotta do it.
We had a great opening last night with Kat’s stuffed clams, Ginny and Nannette’s stuffed mushrooms, and Debbie Demarkis’s meat, cheese, and marinated sun-dried tomato platters, And wonderful Joy, our Angel Reader. Although we had 50+ people here, Kat’s clams, which were a huge hit, were not completely consumed, because she brought so many. Tonight I gave three of them to Steve, (one of the owners of Jalapeños). So I’m opening up the gallery for stuffed clams, and other leftovers for a mug up tomorrow at morning 10:30 am. I also have Belgian Ring Rasperry pastry to put out. Low key:, so eat, drink, and relax before the Santa Parade. BYO coffee. I’ve got soda, cider, beer and wine. All FOB’s and FOG’s (friends of the GMG Blog and Friends of the Gallery) are welcome, plus everyone else, to come in to eat, drink, and hang out. Fred

“Believe those who seek the truth, doubt those who have found it.”
André Gide (1869-1951)
A native of Normandy, Gide published his first novel at 22 and went on to write dozens more, as well as plays, essays and autobiographical works, receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1947. Controversy swirled around him almost his entire life, principally for his open attraction to men much younger than himself, and for his marriage to his cousin, never consummated, while siring a daughter with another woman. In his politics Gide seemed to worship Soviet Communism from afar, until he visited Russia in the 1930’s, after which he became its vocal critic. He spent a significant portion of his life in the then French colonies of North and Central Africa and passed the bulk of the Second World War in Tunisia, but ultimately returned to Paris before his death.
Hi Joey,

Philip Storey, a native of Gloucester, has spent ten years collecting the work of Louis Blend, an amateur photographer who shot thousands of tourists with Gloucester’s Man at the Wheel statue between the years of 1923 and 1973. Blend, born Levi Blinder, was a shoemaker’s apprentice in Russia before emigrating to the US in 1914. He acquired a camera kit and was able to earn a living taking photos of tourists. He eventually settled the base of his operation at Gloucester’s Man at the Wheel statue where he spent the next five decades shooting local visitors. Storey will present a "snapshot" of this unique and underexposed facet of Gloucester lore.

Our Buddy Fred Is Having an Open House!
We’ll be hosting Kathie McElwain, aka the Clam Lady, at our Open House this Saturday evening. Kat (Kathi) will provide samples of her delicious hand made stuffed clams. Her stuffies are 50% clams, preservative free, local, and very fresh. Try them here and buy them at the Danvers Butchery and Henry’s Market, and locally soon. I’ll be backing Kat up with appetizers and refreshments. Enjoy the food, artwork, music, and beat the holiday rush while our unique inventory is still robust. December will be a busy month, and this gallery and most Main Street shops will be open for all of the major events, including:
• November 23rd, Black Friday early opening. Coffee, cider, and pastries. I’ll be open around 7 am. How do you like your coffee?
• December 6th, 38th annual Ladies Night. Party starting at 6 pm until whenever. Love it, a crazy night!
• December 13th, 38th annual Men’s Night. Rockin’ at 6 pm until 10. Guys get it done at this event.
• December 14th, 2nd annual GOOD MORNING GLOUCESTER HOLIDAY PARTY, 6 pm until late. Last year, we had so much food that we ran out of table space, but somehow managed. Restaurant owner Mark McDonough brought a plank (not a mere platter) of sushi from Latitude 43. And Joey’s Sista Felicia stepped up with dishes from her Italian kitchen, as she always does (yum). And Joey himself bought 20 Scalifani’s pizzas. Beer was donated by Sam Adams and spirits from Ryan & Woods Distillery. Mayor Kirk was here, as was a significant portion of the City Council. Over the top! Not to be missed!
• December 20th, 1st annual Family and Friends Night. Bring your "home for the holidays" guests in for gallery offerings, free deserts or appetizers at many restaurants, and Carolers strolling Main Street. My theory is that last minute shoppers will get their buying done before panic time. Also a great time to bring the kids.
Hope to see you!
Fred
