Flu Clinic at Addison Gilbert Hospital

A free community flu clinic will be held at Addison Gilbert Hospital, 298 Washington Street, Gloucester, on Tuesday, January 15 from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. in the Cafe inside the Fisher entrance of the hospital.  The clinic will be conducted by the Gloucester Health Department.  There is no fee or pre-registration required.  The clinic is available to those six months of age and older.   Those attending are asked to wear short sleeves.  All are welcome, you do not have to be a resident of Gloucester to attend; all are welcome.

It’s Not Too Late to Vaccinate!

Gloucester, MA- January 2013. The Gloucester Health Department encourages you to get
vaccinated against the flu, as flu season can go on until March or April and it is shaping up to be a bad year for the flu.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) encourages everyone 6 months and older to get
vaccinated against the flu. If you have not already been vaccinated the flu vaccine is now widely available and is still your best protection against the flu.

At the urging of the Mayor and the City Council, the Public Health Department is offering a free walk in flu clinic this afternoon Thursday January 10th from 3pm-6pm at its offices at 3 Pond Road.

In conjunction with Addison Gilbert Hospital we will also offer a flu clinic this Tuesday January 15th from 9am-11am at the hospital cafeteria. The clinic is free and open to anyone over 6 months of age who still needs a shot.

The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health
habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu.

• Stay home when you are sick.

• Cover your mouth and nose.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

“We are taking the necessary steps to have adequate supply of vaccine available for Gloucester residents, especially our senior citizens and children.”, said Mayor Carolyn Kirk. “There is a lot of flu-like illness in Massachusetts right now, it’s important to remember that in most years, flu season doesn’t peak until February. This means it is an excellent time to get a flu vaccine. We urge everyone to get vaccinated to help stay healthy this season,” said Noreen Burke, Health Director.

For information on where to get a flu shot go to http://www.flu.gov and enter your zip code into the “Flu Vaccine Finder”

For more information, please contact the Gloucester Public Health Department at (978) 281-9771 or visit the city website http://www.gloucester-ma.gov

Gina Fetting Baking At The Open Door

Hello Folks,

As of January 22 I will begin a volunteer program at the OPEN DOOR every Tuesday from 3-6.  We will gather to bake desserts for our Community Meals program.

So,if you have a desire to create wonderful desserts for our guests let me know.  If you don’t have the time to give but would love to contribute ingredients(butter, chocolate, coconut, etc) that would be awesome.

We feed at least 40 people a night and although the food is wonderful we need to make it just a little bit more special. To me there is nothing better then a great dessert.

We will also be making birthday cakes for any clients who come for dinner.

At this point we have two core people that will be there every Tuesday but if you want to join us let me know!

As many of you know Pastry has been my life and I want to share my passion with the Open Door,

I look forward to this new venture.

Be well, Gina

Hi Joey,

I’ve seen the flyer for the Northeast Seafood Coalition/Cape Ann Brewing Co. beer and local seafood dinner on GMG, but wanted to provide more information for readers.

The Northeast Seafood Coalition is a non-profit organization based in Gloucester that represents groundfish fishermen in New England on policy and regulatory matters.  We’re celebrating less popular (but very delicious) fish that’s caught locally and is sustainable.

The Cape Ann Brewing Co. and the Northeast Seafood Coalition are teaming up on January 15 at 6:30pm to host an evening filled with local flavors.  We’re excited to offer a five course meal and each course paired with one of Cape Ann Brewing Co.’s fishermen’s brews.  Plus fisherman and musician Paul “Sasquatch” Cohan will perform!

Now is a very important time to support local fishermen and NSC! The fish will be caught by local fishermen, and generously donated by Cape Ann Seafood Exchange. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Northeast Seafood Coalition, which will help NSC continue in our effort to find creative solutions that work to rebuild fish stocks while preserving family-owned fishing businesses, a diverse groundfish fleet and fishing communities across the Northeast.

Tickets for the 5-course meal are $50.00 and can be purchased by visiting the Cape Ann Brewing Co. or calling the NSC office at (978) 283-9992. We can’t wait to see everyone there!

Have a great vacation!

Thank you,

Nick Brancaleone

MFers Dropping Like Flies

image

I’m shocked snd appalled.

Ordered up this tuna salad with Thai peanut dressing and there wasnt a single placard or mention on the menu reminding people to ask their server if the Tuna salad with Thai peanut sauce had peanuts in it for those poor folks afflicted with those sucky peanut allergies.

MFers are dropping like flies all around me. No doubt all from Massachusetts because obviously we need reminders on every table reminding people who have peanut allergies that they have peanut allergies. People are so backwards here on the islands.

I spoke with the manager and suggested they put signs on all the tables and menus to remind people with peanut allergies that they have peanut allergies but he looked at me like I had two heads. Hey, it’s his ass when the lawsuits come raining down on him from people with peanut allergies who order things that have peanuts in them because they weren’t reminded to ask their server if the food they were ordering contained peanuts. How could they be expected to remember to ask?

It’s only their life that hangs in the balance, Duh!

One of life’s great mysteries. ..

Inevitably every vacation no matter where the destination this scene plays out-

We set up on the beach, tip the guy to bring the umbrella and table set-up and settle in for a tough day.  We walk to the most remote location early on not wishing to be on top of other folks.

And inevitably, like every single vacation t here will be some couple or family that despite having the entire beach and s ton of empty chairs decides to set themselves up 3 or 4 feet away.

It’s mindblowing.  The Mrs just looks at me with that “Really”? look.  An entire beach empty, at 3:45PM.  Not like the whole beach was crowded all day long and everyone else left but us and them so that’s how it turned out that way. We were basically alone on an island and they decided to get all up in our space.

Must be Midwesterners that don’t get beach ettiquette, no?
image

Is it strange that I enjoy writing on vacation at a beach destination?

I can’t tell you how psyched I am when I finish writing a post like the upcoming Poop vs Lysol post or the MFers Dropping Like Flies post or the St Lucia vs Turks vs Playa post.  I get this great accomplished feeling.

I get to write while the Mrs is sleeping or reading her books all day long and don’t have the duty of work which allows me the time to write what I want to write.

Creators gotta create.  I know my oldest, The Bean has this blessing/curse.  You just have to be creating and if you don’t you get depressed.  The Bean needs to be creating at all times while Snoop Maddie Mad could just chill all day long.  Two very different children I have.

Like right now, it’s 7:29AM on Tuesday as I write this and I’ve already edited two prior posts that have been scheduled for future time slots.  Been up since 5AM banging away and couldn’t be happier.  While on vacation.

I don’t know what it is but just like the Bean, I’d go stir crazy just laying in bed when I could be creating.

I might make a line of T-Shirts-

Creators

Gotta

Create

I’ve spoken with EJ about this at length and I think it’s true for any creative person be it artist, musician, writer, photographer, even business people.  I know there is not much more aggravating than being stifled when you have ideas and are kept from acting on them by time constraints, or for whatever reason.  When a truly creative person is stifled it’s tough for them to feel fulfilled.

Brewing Up Some Glosta Joe’s Perfect Storm Using A Keurig Single Cup Reusable Coffee Filter

At the dock I have a $20 cheapo coffee maker for when I can’t get to The Lone Gull or Cape Ann Coffee or Pleasant St but at the house The Mrs had been hinting that she wanted a Keurig.

So being the romantic guy I am I bought her one for Christmas and also bought the Reusable K-Cup Coffee filter.  I hadn’t had much luck with coffee I like from those K-Cups and as you all know I’m a huge fan of Gloucester based coffee brewers Glosta Joe’s (no affiliation to me or our business at the dock BTW)  I just really like Misti and Larry’s Perfect Storm coffee.  I should mention you can buy it at Mamie’s Kitchen or The Cave Downtown or on their website www.glostajoes.com

Anyway let it be known that the reusable K-Cup filter worked flawlessly.  No mess, easy cleanup, much less cost per cup of coffee than buying those K-Cups from Keurig and I get to enjoy Glosta Joe’s Perfect Storm or my Starbucks Café Verona when I’m in the mood for something a little more chocolaty and strong.

If you haven’t tried Glosta Joe’s Perfect Storm and like a nice mellow breakfast blend that isn’t trying to kick you in the face, get down to the Cave or Mamie’s Kitchen or order up some online.

I figure after a couple of bags of buying your own coffee and brewing it in the Keurig using the reusable filter you will be saving money over the cost of buying those fairly expensive disposable one use K-Cups.

This Blog May Not Be For You

If you have been here for a while and can’t distinguish between politically incorrect humor and real life fact based journalism this blog may not be for you.

This is taken from my response to Cynthia Hill who for whatever reason hasn’t quite figured out the difference and more often than not in the comment section feels the need to scold me. ; I just don’t have the energy to spell every thing out for her every time she writes in to complain.

To those that can’t distinguish between the two or are so sensitive that they are offended by obvious liberties taken in the name of ball busting or humor there are much more generic feel good all the time blogs where delicate sensibilities won’t be offended.

We get to do politically incorrect. ; The Times, The Globe, The Post, The Journal doesn’t. ; ; ;

Here you go in case you are one of those that hasn’t figured it out yet-

Cynthia-

I’d like to think the GMG readership gets it but you take everything so literally it’s exhausting having to explain the obvious jokes to your politically correct self.

Should I also take the time to explain to folks that might have thought I’m actually outraged at the Cambridge Health Officials endorsement of banning large sodas that its more about making fun of how ridiculous the notion that we need public health officials to dictate what goes into our bodies while I lay laughing on the beach as I write the piece ; pouring down super sugary girly-man drinks? ; Not Offended Like The Title of The Post Said. ; Also not serious when I point out that they should mandate that 7-11 stores be required to pass out super sized snickers bars with every 64 ounce Big Gulp. ; If you need me to spell this out for you- this blog probably isn’t for you.

Cambridge Health Experts Back Ban On Big Sodas and I’m Outraged

Should I actually take the time to explain that in my “Poop vs Lysol” post yes, Poop vs Lysol that I don’t really go down on my elbows commando style to exit bathrooms to escape poop/lysol smells? ; If you don’t understand that when I say “drop down commando style to avoid the poop/lysol smell” it’s taking some liberties to illustrate a point then this blog probably isn’t for you.

Poop and Lysol- The Poll

Do people still not get that this is a blog meant for entertainment in which everyone including myself gets skewered in the name of fun? ; If you can’t take a good natured ribbing like then this blog probably isn’t for you.

Have you not seen my rants about my terrible nosehair, male pattern baldness, armpit hair, ect, ect, ect? Do you not read the ball busting that goes on in the comment sections?

Jesus I’m Disgusting- Male Armpit Hair Poll

Please, if we cant laugh at ourselves and the rest of the worlds imperfections then maybe the people that don’t get that GMG is not Time or Newsweek, it’s for fun and you suck the joy right out of it when you and the politically correct folk like you can’t grasp the incorrect part of Politically Incorrect humor. ;

You say in your many critical comments on my rants that I need to get over myself. No, the folks that take every obviously outrageous rant and try to turn it into something serious that a politician is lobbying for need to get off their high horse and understand that this for entertainment, not politics. I cant stand politics.

Cynthia Hill,

Maybe this blog isn’t for you.

On Flu Hysteria and The Self Admitted Creepy Guy On Twitter (oh and a poll too)

So yesterday I’m reading all the hysteria about the flu on twitter and suddenly now that Menino announced it as a crisis I guess everything that every man woman and child knew about  this flu season  became real for folks.  But I came across this Tweet that was the straw that broke the camel’s back as far as the hysteria meter goes-

Let me answer unequivocally that I’d rather be the dude that sucks up a couple days with the flu rather than the dope that goes a whole winter wearing a surgical mask.

I hope to god this guy is married already because he’s got zero and I mean zero chance of getting laid rocking a surgical mask out and about all winter.  We’re talking about an epic case of blue balls.  And you know what?  If it comes between an epic case of Blue Balls and an Epic Case of The Flu, give me the Flu 100 times out of 100.

We’re talking about a flu.  Yeah, a nasty flu.  A really sucky fever and chills flu.  Any parent that has had it or had a child with it can tell you how sucky it is but you don’t see the most paranoid Type A moms in the Hamilton or Manchester Mother’s clubs wearing surgical masks.  So I’m gonna venture out on a limb here and use that as my litmus test.  If the Alpha Psycho Type A Moms of the world aren’t even considering wearing surgical masks then no man should wear one.

If you are battling a life threatening illness or if you’re eighty years old and can die of pneumonia, if you have a young newborn at risk at home, by all means, but not if you’re a healthy 30 or 40 something. We’re not talking about SARS.  We’re talking about a flu.

Man Up Bro.

#mancardrevoked

(I just totally signed my I’m gonna get the Flu the minute I land back in Boston card)

Anyway- here’s the poll-

Art Conservation at City Hall Gloucester MA

image002

Catherine Ryan writes-

Hi Joey

SAVING ART CULTURE HISTORY

Besides the Public Art Challenge that is happening as we speak, the Gloucester Committee for the Arts (CFTA) has other exciting news in January 2013!

Part of the work of the Committee for the Arts (CftA) includes mapping the way for appropriate and comprehensive ongoing preservation plans for the City’s art holdings. The CftA is committed to the preservation of Gloucester ’s irreplaceable cultural legacy for future generations.

Art conservation involves the cleaning, preserving, and occasionally the repairing of works of art. Art conservator, Peter Williams, will be setting up scaffolding in City Hall to commence cleaning on some of our stellar WPA murals by Charles Allan Winter (1869-1942). Williams, who has worked with museums and galleries for over 40 years and began his career as conservator with the MFA, was chosen to perform the restoration and preservation work and to complete the work in Phases as funding allows. The restoration work will be a great chance for everybody to see a very cool crossover of science and arts up close, all the while eyeing some of the very best New Deal art in the country. If you’re visiting City Hall, look up, look around! We know art can be a touchstone for so many learning disciplines. Take this chance to get a behind the scenes look at the preservation of our beloved murals. It’s a real joy to be able to look at art like these special murals, learn more about them and now, too, this opportunity to share awareness about the science of conservation.

Before any restoration work could begin, the CftA for several years spearheaded a fundraising effort and applied for grants for the painstaking process of cleaning and restoring these giant murals. Among the contributors were individuals and foundations/grants, including seARTS/Massachusetts Cultural Council, the City of Gloucester CPA funding, and the Bruce J. Anderson Foundation. Perhaps some readers may have purchased postcards at City Hall on Middle Street walk or coasters at another event all of which have contributed to this fund. With over $28,000 raised, the CftA now has the support necessary to begin Phase I for the first few murals, and will continue to raise more funds to finish the projects. We are so fortunate for these contributions. Thank you!

Here are details from two murals. This series by Charles Allan Winter wraps around the doors and architecture surrounding the lobby just outside the Mayor’s office. City Council in Session fills the space above the collector’s windows (approximately 7 feet high by eleven feet wide). City Government covers the opposite wall. Tucked in and around the arch-topped lunettes, the two-part mural, Civic Virtues, spreads across the two other opposing walls. This Winter series focuses on government themes as befitting their location, and the test of time. They offer special glimpses of our community in the 1930s as they include many portraits from life, great detail, artistry and ideas. Note the boys (youth) in the “planning” section of Civic Virtues clasping pieces from a model of the Gloucester High School .

ABOUT THE GLOUCESTER COMMITTEE FOR THE ARTS

Made up of citizen volunteers appointed by the Mayor and City Council, The Committee for the Arts was established by City ordinance in 2000 to promote and celebrate Gloucester ’s cultural heritage.  The Committee recently has worked to preserve and increase awareness of Gloucester ’s WPA murals and other City-owned art. Additionally, the Committee develops and promotes educational programs and establishes awards and honors to recognize local artists. It implements a city-wide public art policy.
