Many a mariner from Gloucester has sailed or steamed close by this lighthouse.  It was built in 1802 and is operational today  — Fl (2) R 12s (W sector) (3).  A few days distant by sail.

Who can name it?

Hello, Joey,

I look forward to your blog every morning — thanks so much for all your hard work!

A while back, two people posted photos of hawks and asked for help in identifying them. Then I saw a hawk in my own front yard, and I became really curious. After a little Internet searching, I found a blog by a fellow called Alexander Dunn: The Daily Bird (a seasonal site for watchers of New England birds). It’s a great site! I e-mailed the photos to him, and asked for his opinion. Here it is (along with two links to pages on his site that feature the birds he mentions)!

I’m glad you found my site and have enjoyed reading it. I took a look at the photos you sent and the first image is that of an immature red-tailed hawk. Image 2 is  bit harder to tell but I think you have either an immature sharp-shinned hawk or a cooper’s hawk. They are similar in appearance but differ in size so without context it’s hard to tell. The "first image" Alexander refers to is the one I’ve attached with the large picture and all the little ones. "Image 2" is the bird sitting on the railing. Alexander does note on his site that a sharp-shinned hawk is about the size of a blue jay, so that might help identify the visitor. A Cooper’s hawk is roughly the size of a crow.

So, what have I learned from all this? That I need lots more practice!

Savour Wine and Cheese on Chronicle Tonight

Watch for us on Chronicle tonight  3/27/13 (which is a rerun of the "Night Out" ) episode shown earlier this year.  My finance and partner at Savour, Robert Morgan, along with my cheese manager, Tonya Woolcott, and her husband Kevin, attended a tasting of cheese and wine in the salon at L’ Espalier in Boston, in a small group, which was video taped for CHRONICLE.


Maritime Gloucester hosts its final Seafood program of the month on Thursday, March 28th at 7pm. Join Beth Daley, The Boston Globe, Ross Lane and Dan D’Ambruoso, Special Agents, NOAA Office of Law Enforcement and Steve Parkes of Maritime Gloucester who will talk about seafood fraud.

The lead reporter on the Globe’s seafood fraud investigative team, NOAA agents and a seasoned seafood representative will describe this emerging concern, and what measures are being taken to address it.

7pm in the Gorton’s Seafood Gallery at Maritime Gloucester, 23 Harbor Loop. Come early as seats are limited.

Welcome to the Beach Gourmet and Savour Wine and Cheese Chef’s Table

The Chef’s Table is a great way to extend our hospitality to clients for private tastings and classes. Our antique, hand-crafted table seats up to twelve people comfortably and is uniquely located inside Savour Wine and Cheese, adjacent to the Beach Gourmet exhibition kitchen. Guests at the table experience an exclusive private dining experience with a menu that is designed specifically to compliment the wine pairing.

These events are typically booked for private parties and are not open to the public; however we periodically open the table to reservation on a first-come, first-served basis. The Community Chef’s Table is a great way to meet new people who share a love of good food and wine or who simply want a change from the fast paced restaurant scene.

Your personal dining experience begins when you arrive at Savour Wine and Cheese for hors d’oeuvre and wine tasting using the Napa Technologies dispensing system. Dinner follows shortly afterward, when you join your dining companions at the table for a four-course meal, each course paired with complimentary tasting-portion of wines selected by our in-house expert, Kathleen Erickson.

The price range is typically $75 to $90 per guest (MA Meals Tax and gratuity not included). A credit card or check is needed to hold your place, but will not be processed until the day of the event. As this is such a small gathering, we must charge for no-shows or cancellations within the 24 hours prior to the event. Just call and let us know prior to the 24-hour deadline if your plans change.

Three local authors, Reverend Susan Moran, Joe Rukeyser, and Jonathan Strong, will be sharing brief selections from
their work on Sunday, April 14, at 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Rockport, 4 Cleaves Street in
downtown Rockport. Enjoy a cup of cider while listening to and discussing the work of these accomplished writers.

The WOMEN’S COMMUNITY CLUB of MAGNOLIA will hold its Easter Bake Sale on Saturday, March 30th from 8:30 – 11:00 a.m. at the Magnolia Library Center located at the corner of Lexington and Norman Ave. All the proceeds from this fund raiser will go to the club’s scholarship fund.  Each year the Women’s Club gives scholarship money to deserving Magnolia students graduating from Gloucester High School who have been accepted to further their education at institutes of higher learning.

North Shore VNA Nurse is at the Rockport Senior Center the 2nd  Thursday of each month from 9:30-12:00. She will check blood pressure and answer any health questions you may have.

Shine Counselor, Sefatia Romeo Thekin will be at the Rockport Senior Center each month on the 3rd Tuesday from 1:30-3:30 to assist seniors with their insurance needs.

Awakening Arts with Carla Mattoli. 8 week course includes nature observation, drawing from nature with chalk pastels and a series of watercolor painting exercises.  Tuesdays, April 16- June 4th 1-3PM  8 classes/$40.00

Drawing what you see” with Elizabeth Harty. This 8 week course will include using a variety of tools to create an interesting composition.  Basic design skills and drawing techniques will be covered.

Cape Ann Museum Project The Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester will be hosting a focus group discussion at the Rockport Senior Center on April 10th from 1:00-2:30 PM. This will bring people together through art conversions, exploring together the power of landscapes to evoke story and imagination. People in this group will follow up with a trip to the museum. The Scraffts Make a Day Of It At The Seacoast Science Center

Hey Joey,
Just when I thought we had dragged our children to every possible day trip imaginable, we took off after hockey today and went to the Seacoast Science Center…just a couple of miles off the Portsmouth Circle. SOOO worth the short drive!!! My boys LOVE the Gloucester Maritime Center and, as members, we go there all summer long, but the Seacoast Science Center is a perfect compromise between our own “little red aquarium” (as my boys call it) and trekking to Boston to the NE Aquarium. While it is no Mystic Aquarium, it is a fantastic day trip!! During warmer weather they also have great trail hiking and tidal pool exploration because they are located in Odiorne Point State Park.
