Roger Davis reports:

On Sunday, the Cape Ann Trails Stewards organized a cleanup along the trails around and above the Goose Cove Reservoir.  A number of people worked at cleaning up the service road around the reservoir (including at least a couple of dads with young sons).  Patti Amaral reported collecting several bags of trash around the parking area at the entrance to Dogtown.  These photos show the cleanup at an apparent party spot near the city’s compost area in Dogtown.  A group of  a dozen volunteers collected a dozen bags full of empty cans, bottles and litter.  This area borders a sensitive vernal wetland, so it was good to see it cleaned up.  It was good to see so many people stepping up to return our woodlands to its beautiful natural state.
Kudos to volunteers. Kudos for Cape Ann Trails Stewards.  Keep your eyes open for future activities of this newly organized volunteer group.

Rally poster

Hi Joey,

The Northeast Seafood Coalition (NSC) will host a Groundfish Industry Rally on April 29 at 11 a.m. at the Boston Fish Pier in Boston’s Waterfront District to unite the industry and call upon the federal government for disaster assistance and mitigation needs to keep small businesses viable and preserve the vital and historic groundfish fishing industry.

“This is the time for industry, friends of the industry, and seafood consumers to come together and ask for help! We’re excited to unite in Boston, the hub of the Northeast groundfish fishery, to discuss important issues affecting the industry today and how we can preserve the fleet for tomorrow,” said Jackie Odell, executive director of NSC.

The upcoming fishing years for the Northeast groundfish fishery were supposed to be a time of prosperity—key stocks were on target to rebuild by 2014.  Now, however, despite adhering to strict science and management measures and remaining within allowable catch limits, the Northeast commercial groundfish fishery has been declared a disaster.

This industry has faced numerous hardships over the years, but nothing like what is to come May 1. The industry will face crippling reductions in catch limits of up to 77 percent on key groundfish stocks. Fishermen and their families face a “perfect storm” of circumstances, which will cause severe hardship for not only small fishing businesses, but fishing communities, on-shore businesses, and American seafood consumers.

Due to extremely limited parking on the Boston Fish Pier, free parking will be available at 22 Fid Kennedy Avenue, which is a short distance from the Pier. NSC will provide a shuttle service from the parking lot to the rally. We kindly ask those planning to attend to park no later than 10:15 a.m. For more information, please visit http://northeastseafoodcoalition.org/Industry_Rally.html.

CAPE ANN TRAIL STEWARDS

Inaugural Event

Cape Ann Trail Stewards (CATs), a new non-profit organization, announces its upcoming inaugural event.

Cape Ann Trail Stewards was founded by citizens of Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester and Essex to help landowners and conservation organizations protect, maintain and expand Cape Ann’s trail networks.

By matching volunteers with trails in need of stewardship, CATs will connect Cape Ann residents with the vast network of trails in the area and help preserve these recreational resources for our community. Cape Ann Trail Stewards will arrange workdays where volunteers can learn about trail construction and maintenance.

The board of directors includes residents of Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester, and representatives from the Essex County Greenbelt, Essex County Trails Association, Cape Ann Climbing Coalition, the New England Mountain Bike Association and other user groups.

Cape Ann Trail Stewards invites the public to join the inaugural clean up workday at the city of Gloucester’s Goose Cove Reservoir on Sunday, April 21st (the day before Earth Day) beginning at 1PM.

We will meet in the lot along Gee Avenue. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for the weather (the event is rain or shine). Bring rakes, shovels and buckets if you have them. CATs will supply gloves and other materials.

Register for this event, join our roster of regular volunteers and learn more about us atwww.capeanntrailstewards.org

Frank McKinney Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

April 19, 2013

“It ain’t a bad plan to keep still occasionally, even when you know what you’re talking about.”

Frank McKinney (Kin) Hubbard (1868-1930)

Midwestern humorist, cartoonist, and writer known best for his political commentary, Hubbard was a high school dropout who said his goal in life was to own a circus. He worked briefly as a silhouette artist and attended art school for a short time before beginning cartoon work for the Indianapolis News.  For 25 years he drew the acclaimed cartoon “Abe Martin of Brown County” which went into syndication and made him nationally known. Will Rogers cited Hubbard as an influence and called him the greatest humorist of his time.

I’m Not Feeling My Good Harbor Footbridge Repair Prediction

On the March 30th podcast with Paul Morrison and Paulie Walnuts I set the over/under on when I thought the Good harbor Beach Footbridge would be repaired at the third Saturday of May.  Haven’t seen any work on it yet.

Hope I’m not too far off on the prediction because as of today it looks like the OVER is the better bet.

We will see.

Andreas Thanos Has Some Nice Things To Say About Gloucester People

Hi Joey.  Long time not speak.  But I wanted to share this story with you and possibly your readers.

Gloucester folk…

It is funny. I do not live in Gloucester, never have lived in Gloucester, but I am hooked on this town. Visit it as often as I can, photograph it even more, I often eat and drink in Gloucester, to the point that my wife, children and many friends poke fun at me for it.

Truth be told, I never thought that I would be having such a "Gloucester" experience in Washington D.C. Here’s the story: we flew down to Washington DC this past Wednesday. On Thursday (4/19) we were at the Zoo. Great place. When I say "great" I don’t just mean quality of the exhibits … I also mean size. The kids loved it. We spent the whole morning there. And towards the end of the day we found ourselves on the opposite side of the exit. That is about half an hour worth of walking UPHILL!!!

We were at the Amazonia exhibit, when my wife asked this volunteer for the best way to get to the exit. She saw us all four exhausted and she said: "if you wait 10 minutes, I get off work and I can give you a ride to the entrance." Of course we accepted her gracious offer.

As we were exhausted we took advantage of the wait and sat down for 10 minutes. She comes picks us up and we walk to her car. Guess what folks. She is a Gloucester native. Born, raised and lived in Gloucester until the ’80s. Yes, I feel like an idiot for not asking her for her name, but it was a long day and by then my brain had already called it a day.

We chatted, and I found out that she now lives in Bethesda with her husband, and after she retired a couple of years ago, she started volunteering at the National Zoo. Her father was a Gloucester fire chief. She was in Gloucester last October, so I filled her in on the news I get from Joey’s blog and we started chatting about Gloucester. Of course, the fire chief was also a freemason and since I also am one, the conversation turned to freemasonry. Before we knew it we had reached the gate. We all thanked her and we parted ways. Now, what more can a tired visitor to a large city ask for? A kind-hearted Gloucester native to add, with her good deed, to Gloucester’s pride.

I feel very lucky because all the folks I have met in (or from) Gloucester are GREAT!!!

— A.
