Listen To Me Right Now. Drop What You’re Doing. Run (Don’t Walk) To Madfish. Belly Up To The Sushi Bar And Say This Word:

Omakase.
The greatest sushi chef in the history of sushi chefs will understand that you want him to create the most interesting, tasty, orgasmic presentation of sushi you’ve ever had the pleasure of eating.

Listen to me.

I’m not joking.

This is not hyperbole.

Orgasmic.

I have no idea how Jordan ended up at Madfish but every time he absolutely decimates my already high expectations.

Omakase.

Do it. Don’t question it. DONT order the safe tuna roll or California roll.

Omakase.

You’re Welcome.

Presentation for Photographers by the Griffin Museum of Photography in Rocky Neck, Sunday, July 7, 5-6pm

SUN July 7, 5-6pm : Gallery Talk by Paula Tognarelli,
Executive Director, Griffin Museum of Photography and
Meg Birnbaum, Photography Altelier Instructor

at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Rocky Neck, Gloucester

Paula Tognarelli, the Executive Director of the Griffin Museum of Photography and Meg Birnbaum, Photography Atlelier Instructor, will talk about how the Photography Altelier Program has helped launch the careers of dozens of photographers over the last 13 years.  Photography Atelier is a unique portfolio-building course for emerging to advanced photographers. In addition to guidance and support in the creation of a body of work, the class prepares artists to market, exhibit and present their work to professionals.

Paula and Meg will also answer questions from the audience about jurying, sequencing, group critiques and other photography-related issues.

image

n the Atelier, students may choose to photograph with digital media or film; use SLRs, plastic cameras, cell phones, and other methods for image capture and select from the range of options for image presentation. Instruction in the Atelier includes slide presentations and discussions which consider contemporary trends in photography as well as the history of photography. Assignments are designed to encourage experimentation in both subject matter and approach. Supportive group critiques help each participant create strong images as well as edit and sequence their work to produce cohesive portfolios. In addition, final formats such as photobooks, mixed and multi-media works and installations are encouraged.

Joe Ciolino writes-

Joe, just want to pass along to you The Weathervane’s featured clothing line for the July 4 week.

As we all know the best live lobsters in town can be found at Captain Joe and Sons. The Weathervane is featuring a different type of lobsters for the July 4 week.  Shown in the photo is our line of lobster clothing for children, we have bibs, socks, tees, onesie, PJ sets, and of course lobsters plush, and for a sweet treat barley flavored lobster pops.

So start the day with a real lobster feast, and then bring some Weathervane Lobster Clothing home as a reminder of the week.  Remember “Butter Me Up!” Gloucester

Ladies- Don’t Buy into The High Rise Shorts Thing

They’re mom-jean cut offs.

Saw these at Nordstrom the other day.

What do they think you’re stupid or something?  They have huge cargo container after huge cargo container ships loaded with excess Mom-jeans that noone will buy because they’re just so unflattering so they figure they’ll just lop off the bottoms and call them high-rise shorts thinking that you’ll fall for that?  It’s felt out insulting.

Nordstrom- be better than this.

North Coast Angler Fishing Report 7/5/13

Fishing Report: 7-5-2013

I only got out fishing just one morning this past week (at Plum Island) so I don’t have a whole lot of intel to pass along. This is what I do know;
The Cape Ann fishing is settling in to its usual summer pattern with the best bite happening in the mornings. Gloucester Harbor continues to fish fairly good along the various beaches and a few anglers are taking some big fish outside the harbor at the Woe and groaner. Best bait continues to be live mac’s. Some big blues are also in the mix here and there but not big numbers as yet. Steve P and Brianmoc reported spotty action around fishtown and at Rockport, however Brian and buds had a few good mornings at Crane with one big striper pushing the tape beyond 45 inches. So plan on shifting gears to full on summer pattern; mornings with live bait or tossing plugs at the beaches.

The Merrimack and Joppa are running really stained and foul as last week’s torrents are flowing brown on the flats and at the mouth. We did manage a few dinks on the flats Tuesday but had our best luck running and gunning the beachfront with topwaters. A few guys were taking some quality fish drifting live or dead mac’s on the dropping tide at the mouth. I have also heard that the night shift anglers are starting to get some action at the tide top drifting eels on Joppa. So indeed the summer pattern is taking shape there as well. That’s all I got!

EJ and Karen Ristuben Get Their SUP On!

EJ and Karen swung by the dock on their SUP vehicles.  When I asked them if they had ever fallen they both replied only once or twice which amazes me and shows just how stable these things are.

To date I still haven’t tried it but I’m really looking forward to the back feeling like it’s not hanging on by a thread so I can get out there.

In the meantime check out the latest from Cape Ann SUP

Duck Tour Question

Jonathan Olly asks-

Greetings Joey,

I have a minor photographic mystery for you.  I recently came across this postcard on eBay, showing a WWII DUKW emerging onto Pavilion Beach, with Ten Pound Island Light in the background.  Do you or any of your readers remember when these tours operated in Gloucester?  The caption on the back of the card reads "Amphibious duck ride from land to sea on a guided tour of Gloucester Harbor.  Leaving every half hour from Pavilion Beach, Gloucester, Massachusetts."
Best regards,

Jonathan

A Question To The Rockporters- Fog Horns in Rockport – what happened to them – HELP ME PLEASE

Wayne asks-

Hi Gloucester;
I absolutely enjoy your blog. But I have a question concerning the Fog Horns in Rockport  and no one seems to be able to answer my question. I am hoping you can help.
I live on Phillips Ave, Rockport (near the Emerson Inn)..For years I could hear the FOG Horns during overcast days and find the sound so comforting & soothing (reminds me of days gone by). However,, for several months now-they have been silenced and I am heartbroken………
what happened to the Fog Horns?  Please don’t tell me they have ceased due to some disgruntled residents?
Please make my day – can you help me and maybe do a little digging around and see what you can find out?    ..I’m quite serious.
Most Appreciative-look forward to hearing from you
Wayne

The "You. Are. Beautiful. – Tribute to Warriors" show is now up at LAT 43 in Gloucester!

05132014-Evan1-Exhibition-e3b-24x24-72dpi

Dear Cape Ann Community,

The "You. Are. Beautiful. – Tribute to Warriors" show is now up at LAT 43 in Gloucester! This special event to celebrate art and support our wounded vets is this Monday, July 8 from 6:30-9:30pm.  Tickets are $20/person and 100% of the ticket price goes to benefit the Semper Fi Fund.  You can buy tickets at the door or here:  http://youarebeautiful.eventbrite.com/

Through this body of work, I am proud to share the voices and portraits of five veterans, four of whom are from Massachusetts.  All five of the veterans I photographed will be at the event, including Corporal Evan Reichenthal, USMC.

Evan decided he wanted to become a Marine when he was in middle school.  After graduating from high school in 2009, he enlisted and would see his dream of pursuing the ultimate profession to test one’s mind, body and spirit, come true.

In December 2010, Evan’s unit deployed to a small base in Marjah in southern Afghanistan.   Evan was an infantryman and was on foot patrol on January 5, 2011 when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED).  The explosion severed his right leg, damaged his left calf, destroyed his right elbow and sent shrapnel throughout most of his body.

Evan underwent 26 surgeries following his injury.  He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service.  Evan applied the same calm determination he maintained in becoming a Marine to his recovery.  His will to adapt and overcome continues to make him a warrior.  As he says, “My body may break but my mind cannot.”

Evan would say he is not a hero because he was just doing his job.  I think he’s a hero, and sometimes even heroes need help.  This is why we are doing this event.

Evan is also on the cover of my book, "You. Are. Beautiful. Volume 01 – Portraits and Poems."  I launched it in April, and it features 26 people I photographed for my project, veterans and beyond, across Boston and surrounding areas, Chicago and surrounding areas, Los Angeles, Oakland and San Francisco.

100% of net proceeds from the book go to charities that empower wounded vets and at-risk youth.  The book is available at Lula’s Pantry in Rockport, Willow Rest in Gloucester and online at:  http://ThiLinh.pixpasites.com.

I hope you are inspired by this work, and I hope you will pay this message forward.  You are beautiful.

Sincerely,

Thi Linh Wernau, Rockport, MA
