“Birdseye in Pieces,”

by Laureen Adrienne Maher

Contact Info: laureen@beautybarstyle.com or call/text anytime: 617-335-6788.

This show is dedicated to my late husband, Steve DeBoer, who supported my painting efforts whole-heartedly and loved Gloucester and the cast of characters and artists that make up this rich town.

Everywhere I go people are talking about what is happening around the old Birdseye building. All I know is I had a great time painting it!

I met many dogs and dog lovers. On one occasion, I was entertained by a guitarist who pulled up and played like Jimmy Hendrix for four straight hours! I got used to it…if only for Zen reasons. I have to admit that the rhapsody influenced the psychedelic foreground I created with a palette knife for the middle piece, “Venting about Birdseye.”

During another three-hour session a couple with an accent walked by to look at my painting and asked innocently if there might be a Marriot Hotel in the neighborhood. I didn’t know I would be so entertained in what I thought would be a quiet, desolate place to paint. I even found a little bit of fame when a Gloucester Times photographer showed up (Allegra Boverman) and decided to include me and my rough sketch in the foreground of her photo of this controversial spot. Of course, the moment was almost ruined by a Gloucester resident that would not stop talking to us the entire mini-shoot! There’s always that!

Anyway we had a nice time exchanging brief stories about my art and her photography. I even got to pass out my business cards to a few people interested in my haircuts. Then I got to bump into the famous and humble Jeff Weaver who showed up from around the corner and it seemed out of the blue! Gloucester is always so much fun. And now I get to hang my show at the best coffee place I know! Are we having fun yet? I love Gloucester!

Laureen resides in East Gloucester . She owns Beauty Bar at 14 Parker Street where she cuts and colors hair and exhibits her artwork year round: beautybarstyle.com

New works are in progress for her upcoming exhibit at the Sawyer Free Library this November when she will be the featured artist of the month. She will be participating in the library auction event this September as well. Her work can also be viewed at Fred Bodin Historic Photo Gallery, Main Street.

Critical Question Of The Day- If you are talking to someone on the phone, do you hang up if you have to poop?

Maybe this should be a two part CQOTD

If you are speaking to someone on the phone and have to take a poop, do you tell them you’ll call them back and then squeeze one out or do you just let it fly while chatting away on the can?

Second part:

What about peeing?  Does it make a difference?

People have been asking me to use the blog for scientific research and I’m not sure how much more scientific we could get than a GMG poll.

Mayor Kirk Forwards A Photo Album of Gloucester’s New Fire Truck (Engine 2) Being Built

Hi Joey,

Here is something you don’t see every day!   This is a photo album of our new fire truck (Engine 2) being built.   Costs $650,000.   We are finally getting to the point where we can finance new apparatus on a rotating basis and over time so as to not have trucks breaking down all at once or having to fund all at once.

Due to the Popularity of The “Who makes the best chocolate chip cookie” Post Yesterday- It’s Competition Time Baby!

Yesterday the question was posed-

Critical Question Of The Day- Who Makes The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies You’ve Ever Eaten? Go.

Posted on August 6, 2013 by

Everyone has their favorites,  some like more chewy, some more crunchy.

Does this call for a chocolate chip cookie competition mug up or does this call for a chocolate chip cookie competition mug up! This could be huge!!!!

For the record I’ll take soft baked over crunchy chocolate chip cookies 100 times out of a 100.  What kind of lunatic prefers hard chocolate chip cookies over soft ones?  Only insane maniacs.  Seriously.  Can’t trust those hard chocolate chip cookie lovers is what I always say.

Matthew Green Photo

Here’s what I’m thinking-
Contestants bake enough for every one to try. We place numbers in front of each tray of cookies. People get a slip of paper or ticket to place a vote and slip it into a solo cup behind each contestant’s tray.
We tally up the votes, drink some coffee, and enjoy each other’s company yet again.
Who’s with me?

Local Deputy Fire Chief Completes International Professional Re-Designation Process

Our Miles Schlichte Is Now A Chief Fire Officer (which in Firefighter terms I think means superhero or something)

image

Deputy Fire Chief Miles Schlichte of the Gloucester, Massachusetts Fire Department has successfully completed the process that continues his professional designation of “Chief Fire Officer” (CFO).  The Commission on Professional Credentialing met on July 2, 2013 to officially confer this re-designation upon Chief Schlichte. Chief Schlichte is one of only 922 CFO’s worldwide.

The Chief Fire Officer Designation program is a voluntary program designed to recognize individuals who demonstrate their excellence in seven measured components including:  Experience, Education, Professional Development, Professional Contributions, Association Membership, Community Involvement, and Technical Competencies. Chief Schlichte received his original designation in July of 2010. To maintain this professional designation, individuals need to show they have continued to develop as a CFO in four areas: Professional Development, Professional Contributions, Active Association Membership and Community Involvement.

A Board of Review consisting of members of the fire and emergency services profession, academia, and municipal agencies review each application and recommends successful candidates for designation to the Commission.

Chief Schlichte has been a member of the Gloucester Massachusetts Fire Department for twenty five years and currently resides in Gloucester.

Video- Fish Teaser- Tough To Watch

Documentary Filmmaker Farhod Family Sheds Light on New England’s Struggling Groundfish Industry

WASHINGTON (Saving Seafood) August 5, 2013 — Brooklyn-based filmmaker Farhod Family has released a teaser for his yet-to-be-titled documentary film, in which he chronicles the hardships faced by fishermen in New England’s groundfish industry.

Mr. Family began working on his self-funded documentary in September of 2012 after the federal government declared the New England groundfish industry to be in a state of economic disaster. Since then, Family has reached out to the National Science Center (NSC), attended New England Fishery Management Council (NEFMC) meetings, and met with the fishermen whose livelihoods are being threatened by cuts to their allowable catch.

Mr. Family’s film will provide an in-depth look at the groundfish industry, from the efforts of New England’s fishermen, young and old, to fish processors, and ice companies, all of whom play an important role in coastal communities and waterfront business throughout Massachusetts. The film will explore ports in Gloucester and New Bedford, as well as the town of Scituate, Massachusetts, a small fishing community that is on the brink of losing its entire fleet.
Mr. Family began his journalism career covering the 2009 presidential elections in Iran. Since returning, his work has appeared in PBS Frontline, The New York Times, Washington Post, Global Post, NHL, NFL among others.  He holds a BA in history and French from the University of Hawaii, and an MS in digital media from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Gift from the Sea

Fred Bodin submits-

Noah Willett landed a 28.5 inch “football fat” striper. As Marty Luster said on GMG, this is The Gift. Your children will treasure these experiences as long as they live, and then pass them on to your grandchildren. You think this young man will ever forget this? Well, read Marty’s post: https://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/2012/07/29/the-gift/ Noah is 8. He looks so proud it could break your heart. The charter boat is owned by Vito Demetri, AKA “The Striper King,” Captain of the F/V Pavilion, out of Gloucester. Noah’s father Peter says that Vito’s rates are very reasonable. Where did Capt. Vito drop the hook? Outside (the breakwater) is all I can say. Most pro fishermen won’t reveal the exact location of where they hit the “money fish.” But I will tell you where the fish are: “In the water!”

WillettNoah

Caleb Willett landed this 31″ striper. Don’t he look proud? Older brother Caleb is 11 years old. His parents, Peter and Leah Willett, have raised two outstanding children. Parents Peter and Leah Willett are long time customers, and his birthday is July 28th, same as Jackie and me.

Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s "Lewis H. Story" at Salem Maritime Festival

Len Burgess submits-

Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s flagship “Lewis H. Story” was a big attraction at the Salem Maritime Festival on Saturday. Intentionally rolling the ship over at low tide, as shown, is how the original Chebbaco 2-man fishing schooners of the 1700’s would unloaded their catch of the day and also the way they would repair and paint the bottom when the tide was out. The Shipbuilding Museum’s booth at the festival was also very busy all afternoon.

Kelly’s Roast Beef Rap Is Outstanding But We Up Here On The North Shore Know It’s Nicks All Day Long and Everybody Else Is a Distant Second

I’ve had roast beef sandwiches late night since back in my days at Bishop Fenwick in 83.  Had em all over the place.

Listen to me right now- Kelly’s Roast Beef isn’t even in the same stratosphere as Nick’s Roast Beef.  I could rattle off two or three other roast beef joints that decimate Kelly’s Roast Beef in the roast beef game.  9 times out of 10 Kelly’s comes with gray dried out meat.  Nothing like the succulent rare beef you’re gonna get at Nicks.

Supreme’s, Rockport House easily better than Kelly’s.  Not to mention you go to Kelly’s and their prices are freakin outrageous.

I’ll give Kelly’s props all day long for the video though.  Outstanding.

A rap video don’t make the beef taste better though bro.

When you want the best its Nick’s FTW.
