Quit Whining About The Cold

Hi Joey,

I was at Sawyer Free Library the other day looking of historic photos and flipped open a book that landed on this page. It struck me as funny because I realized immediately that these kids were skating on the harbor. I asked myself  “How cold does it have to be, for what period of time, to freeze Gloucester Harbor (salt water mind you) to a thickness hard enough to skate on?”

A little research led me to a volcanic eruption in Alaska in during June of 1912 that formed a new volcano called Novarupta, lasted 60 hours and spewed 3.6 cubic miles of magma and 4.7 cubic miles of ash into the atmosphere.  This eruption was 30 times more powerful than the eruption at Mount St. Helens and may have caused a mini-ice age that lasted a few years due to the ash cloud covering the planet in a fine layer of dust that reflected more sunlight back into space.

What really put a smile on my face was that these kids are smiling! It must have been pretty darn cold for a while, but they were happy to be outside enjoying the cold.

If you want to see this photo, head to the library! Show this photo to one of the librarians, and you’ll be shocked at how quickly they’ll be able to find it.  While you’re there, get a library card and think about making a small donation to help make this wonderful resource even better!

Enjoy,

My Archnemesis- Popcorn

image

When did it all go so wrong for me and popcorn?  I used to be able to pound down buckets of popcorn in my youth but now that I’m old as a mofo it seems I can’t eat two handfuls without getting fifteen kernels all stuck under my tongue, in between my teeth, all over the damn place.

Damn you popcorn.

GHS DECA Competition Success!!!

Hi: Yesterday 43 GHS Marketing DECA students competed at our district conference along with 800 students in our region.  In this competition students must either come up with a creative project on a marketing/business topic and either write a paper ( 30 pages)  and present it or, take a 100 question exam and do a role play with a business professional (judge) using the knowledge and skills they have gained since September. They did an awesome job, and represented Gloucester with the utmost in professionalism as they usually do. Here is a list of the students who have qualified for the state competition held in Boston in March:  Please congratulate them if you see them.  A special thanks to Chris Kobs for not only chaperoning but using his past DECA experience and professional advice to help guide some very nervous students.  He also took the attached photo.

In The Battle For More Picturesque Photo Location Who You Got Between The Burnham House In Essex and Motif No 1 in Rockport and The Paint Factory in Gloucester.

At One Time I might have said the Paint Factory but it’s such a mess now you’d have to put it out of the running.   The Burnham House In Essex has the Natural surroundings thing going for it.  Rockport’s Motif No 1 is nice in it’s own right and probably has the most world wide cache.

Hi Joey,

Friday afternoon, once the storm ended, I decided to head north and check out Plum Island.  Here are a few of my favorite shots.

A tractor that looks like it’ll be stuck for a while.  A dog retrieving a ball in the snow covered dunes.  The Plum Island Light.  The surf was definitely still up.  The houses and fields were covered with 2 feet of snow and ice. A snowy owl was perched on the roof of a deserted home.  And in Rowley along the river, I encountered a very interesting midair snow drift that almost resembled a ghost floating along in front of me.  The temperature was balmy 14, and it was gorgeous!

Help the Fire Department Protect You: Shovel Fire Hydrants

“In a fire seconds count,” said Gloucester Fire Chief Eric Smith, “so help your fire department protect you and your neighbors but removing snow from nearby fire hydrants.” Fire officials are urging those who are able to do so, to shovel snow away from fire hydrants in case access to them is needed quickly.

Clear Snow from Furnace and Dryer Vents
Keep outside furnace, hot water and dryer vents clear of drifting snow, to prevent flue gases from backing up into the home and creating a carbon monoxide hazard.

Clear Snow from Vehicle Tailpipes
Last winter, two children from Boston died from carbon monoxide while sitting inside arunning vehicles where the tailpipe was clogged with snow. Doctors from the Boston Public Health Commission have created an educational video on CO poisoning that addresses this particular risk.

Eleanor White Has Some Nice Things To Say

Dear Good Morning Gloucester:  Learned about this site just a short time ago from a dear friend, and former resident of Gloucester, here in the Monterey Bay area.  I’m hooked on this publication now,  and can’t wait for your publication to hit my mailbox daily.

I grew up in North Andover, Mass and spent many summers with a dear friend and her family in Wingaersheek Beach.  Can’t stop thinking about the great times I spent there.

Is the Paper House still standing!!!  Oh, how I loved that tour 🙂

Seeing the photos and reading the stories brings me back and makes me smile.

Thank you for your publication and reminding me how beautiful life was in paradise.

Restaurants In Cape Cod Serving Icelandic Cod 3.1.2014

Restaurants In Cape Cod Serving Icelandic Cod
3.1.2014
Words by Nanna Árnadóttir

Due to fishing restrictions in New England, restaurants in Cape Cod have stopped serving local cod in favour of Icelandic cod.
Cod once sustained New England’s fishing industry, but in recent years, regulators have imposed severe catch limits on cod, and the fish remain scarce,

This beautiful male orange cat was found on Friend Street on October 24, 2013.

All agencies were contacted. Found cat advertisement  was in the Times.

Cat has a white bib, long tail with brown rings. He is very affectionate and playful.

Someone must be looking for him, as he is a very good cat. He has been checked out by a Vet and had all his shots. Any information to find his home, will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Joey,

After being cooped up for the storm, I headed out to Cranes Beach check out the dunes and the surf.

The snow on the dunes was laced with a marbling of sand which made for some quite interesting patterns.

Even the day after the storm ended, there was still a bit of surf, but the seagulls seemed to take it all in stride.
