ADDISON GILBERT HOSPITAL Announces $75,000 Grant

Funds will support capital equipment, help match Dusky Leadership Challenge

On the heels of being awarded a $1.2 million Health Policy Commission CHART grant to build on the successful implementation of its High Risk Intervention team, Addison Gilbert Hospital (AGH) has been awarded a $75,000 capital grant from an anonymous Boston-based foundation. The grant will support capital enhancements and new equipment to improve care for patients and increase clinical excellence in the Cape Ann community.

“As a not-for-profit hospital, Addison Gilbert depends upon contributions like this to invest in our hospital and deliver services to keep our community healthy,” said Cindy Cafasso Donaldson, Vice President, Addison Gilbert Hospital.  “We deeply appreciate the philanthropic support that keeps our hospital thriving.  This generosity will ensure AGH stays at the forefront of medical care for local patients and residents of Cape Ann.”

The grant is also helping the hospital reach the $350,000 Dusky Leadership Challenge set forth earlier this year by Linzee Coolidge, a trustee of the Dusky Foundation. The Dusky Leadership Challenge raises money for AGH in to invest in new equipment, technologies and programs that will help it keep pace with a rapidly changing health care landscape.

In February, Mr. Coolidge, made an initial $350,000 gift and challenged the community to match it through contributions. The goal of the Dusky Challenge is to raise money for Addison Gilbert Hospital and to encourage leaders from the community to support the hospital.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Boston-based foundation for this grant,” said Rebecca Imperiali, Vice President of Philanthropy at Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals. “It is through the generosity of organizations and individuals in the community, just like this, that AGH has been so successful. The Dusky Leadership Challenge has been a compelling tool for encouraging and inspiring additional contributions for the capital and clinical needs of Addison Gilbert Hospital.”

The registration deadline for the December 6 SAT is November 6, 2014, so if your student would like to take the SAT then please register for this test at http://www.sat.org

The Interact Club meets every Wednesday afternoon in the lecture hall. The Interact Club at Gloucester is a version of the young Rotarians. They are responsible for reaching out within the community and looking for community service assignments. Their past service commitments have included the Pizza Taste Off at the cruise port, the Empty Bowl, assisting with filling the bowls, the Lobster Roll Sale next week, and assisting with meal preparation and service at the Open Door Food Pantry. As Gloucester High School does not currently maintain a community service commitment for graduation, the Interact Club is a wonderful way to get started and begin serving the community to which we all owe so much!

The DECA Store Grand Opening was Friday October 31, and will be available during your lunch blocks to visit and take advantage of some really great deals!

This GHS group MCAS English and Math retests will be given at GHS on November 5 and November 12, respectively. If your child will be taking these required tests for their graduation requirements please ensure they are present in school at this time. We have met with all of your students to explain the process and the importance of the retests to meet their graduation requirements.

First of all I want to thank you for helping us so much last year for the Relay For Life of Cape Ann, despite the weather it was a great success and we attained and surpassed our fund raising goals.

We have listened to those who have supported us in the past and have made great changes in the 2015 Relay For Life of Cape Ann .
This year we will be hosting a Carnival type of atmosphere at the newly renovated Burnham’s Field the event will be from 12:00 noon to 10:00 PM On June 20th and the luminaria Celebration will be held at 10:00 pm.making this a very family friendly event! As we did last year we will to unite ALL the communities of Cape Ann by reaching out to Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester, Essex and Ipswich. We are committed to Fighting Cancer every Step of the Way. Remembering our cancer survivors, the caregivers, remembering those we have lost and fighting back to end this dreaded disease.

We will be hosting a Relay for Life of Cape Ann Kickoff Rally Open House Saturday November 15th,from 10:00 to 12:30 at the First Baptist Church on 33 Gloucester Ave. We will offer the chance to learn more about Relay, attendees can create and register a relay team, volunteer to help plan our 2015 event, register as a cancer survivor or caretaker for the survivor and caretaker celebration, and make a luminaria bag to honor the memory of a loved one. There will crafts and items to purchase, games to play, raffles to win, all to support Relay for Life of Cape Ann.

Would you help us publicize the event in the coming weeks edition of Good Morning Gloucester? The event is open to the public and is completely free. We invite everyone who is interested in getting involved with Relay For Life to join us.

LECTURE PRESENTATION WITH SLIDES by LISE BREEN on the HISTORY OF SLAVERY IN GLOUCESTER

Part of the 2014-15 Series to Benefit the Meetinghouse Preservation Fund, the presentation focuses upon the early history of slave-holding in Gloucester, freed African-American residents, and our City’s role in the later Abolitionist Movement.

Black O Heavens: Links to some Cape Ann slave owners, slave ship owners and captains, and Universalists.

Throughout this year, Lise has been presenting various aspects of her research on Cape Ann’s complicity with slavery.  You may have heard her speak at the Church last February on the Daltons of Gloucester.  She has given talks on related topics for NOAA, The Gloucester Writers Center Diggers Series, the Rockport Universalist Church, and at the Sandy Bay Historical Society.  She has received a Phillips Library Fellowship from the Peabody Essex Museum and a Paul Cuffe Memorial Fellowship from the Munson Institute, Mystic Seaport Museum, to help support her research.

Lise has a graduate degree in anthropology from New York University and held several positions at the Brooklyn Museum.  She co-authored Objects of Myth and Memory: American Indian Art at The Brooklyn Museum.

Please contact Lise through the Church if you have accounts of slaves or abolitionists in your family. This is a history that needs to be told.

Hi Joey,

The Cape Ann Contra Dance series continues this Friday, November 7 at 7:30 PM in the American Legion Hall, 8 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA.

We’ve been learning that many local folks are still just learning that contra dancing is available on Cape Ann, so we’re really happy that you help us get the word out.

The dancing is mildly aerobic, sociable and fun.  No experience is necessary as all dances are taught.

We really encourage newcomers to come join us.

seARTS Presents Final Partner With an Artist Project:
Tricia O’Neill’s Harbortown Mural Honoring Vincent Ferrini
Public invited to join Tricia, Gloucester Writers Center, seARTS and Cultural District representatives at 2pm on Saturday November 8 at Fred Bodin Historic Photo Gallery
On Saturday, November 8, seARTS will present the final Partner With an Artist project celebrating Cape Ann’s cultural districts: Gloucester artist Tricia O’Neill’s mural honoring famed Gloucester writer Vince Ferrini.
A reception will be held at 2pm at the Fred Bodin Historic Photo Gallery at 82 Main Street in Gloucester, just opposite the location of the mural, located on side of the Palazola’s Sporting Good building at the corner of Main Street and Porter Street. Tricia will describe how the mural was created, discuss her inspirations for the project, and talk about her partnership with the Gloucester Writers Center.
The public is invited to join Tricia, the Gloucester Writer’s Center, Cultural District representatives and seARTS members for this event.
