Beaux Arts Ball postcard.indd

The Rocky Neck Art Colony’s Beaux Arts Ball is this art community’s most vibrantly festive social event of the season!

Celebrating the art of self-expression, the Beaux Arts Ball, famous for its guests’ exuberantly expressive costumes, invites all to raise a glass of bubbly and feast on fabulous fare. Then, dance the night away in an “On The Rocks!” costume creation that’s gorgeously garish, wildly whimsical, flagrantly flamboyant, ethereally elegant, or funky and fun – or not! Costumes add to the fun, but are certainly optional.

Participate in or simply enjoy the Costume Prize Competition, then try your luck in a raffle for a wide array of handsome gifts: a 3 hour trip for six on the “Windfall”, a 49 foot Hinckley-made sailboat; a hand-made birdhouse crafted by a local artisan; a colorful wheelbarrow filled with Spring gardening tools; a hand crafted full size wooden kayak; cases of locally made craft beers; a brand new bicycle; and a hand designed mirror by a noted artist and other exciting offerings from local donors.

The Beaux Arts Ball is a glorious tradition on Rocky Neck that, over the years, has attracted some of the great lights of the New England art world. So, share in the history, support your local artists, and experience the fun as you strike a pose, bring chaos to couture, hustle your bustle and dance like a dervish at the Beaux Arts Ball!!

Which Churches Offer Sunrise Service?

Hi Joey!
Hope you are well!
Quick question:  In years past I have attended sunrise service for Easter on Good Harbor Beach.  I love it.  This year I have not seen anything about it.  I cannot remember which churches are involved in this, but wondered if you have heard anything about it.
I will email a few churches as well, but thought I would ask you about it as well.  Please let me know if you know anything about this.
Thank you very much,
Priscilla Browne

Hi Joey,
In my attempt to get a head start on promotions, I wanted to reach out to you about our spring musical, Legally Blonde, next weekend. I’d love to be able to get the information out to the community and in your calendar of events as both our Jalapenos fundraiser and Dog Auditions were huge successes!
Here’s a little blurb about the show:
Join Gloucester High School Theatre Program for their spring musical, LEGALLY BLONDE. Get ready for a fun, upbeat story of self-discovery staring Harvard’s beloved blonde, Elle Woods.
Based on the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer motion picture and novel of the same name, this internationally award-winning musical follows Elle as she tackles stereotypes, snobs, and scandal to pursue her dreams. But don’t judge the show by its hair color. This musical is ridiculously enjoyable from start to finish and will have you leaving the theatre screaming OMIGOD!
Tickets may be purchased at the door, or on our website for a 10% discount!

Chickity Check It!- “More than 250 million years before the first dinosaur, the most fearsome killers on Earth may have been lobsters”

Ancient, Predatory “Lobster” is an Ancestor to All Modern Arthropods

From Gizmodo-

More than 250 million years before the first dinosaur, the most fearsome killers on Earth may have been lobsters. Yawunik kootenayi, a common ancestor to spiders, shrimp and butterflies, was a predatory “lobster-like” creature that ruled the seas half a billion years ago.

As reported this week in the journal Paleontology, fossils of Yawunik were recently unearthed from Marble Canyon, part of the renowned Burgess Shale rock formation of British Columbia. This massive fossil bed holds specimens of many sea creatures that lived during the Cambrian period, the geologic era that saw a rapid diversification of marine life forms.

More Reasons to Get Fit Gloucester!

A Study Showed that Fit Middle Aged Men Were Found to Have Lower Risk of Colon and Lung Cancer!

In the news, March 26th… a study published on-line by the peer-reviewed Journal of the American Medical Association/JAMA Oncology showed a link between cardiovascular health and a decreased incidence of  colon and cancer.

These findings were first presented June 2, 2013 at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Chicago, Ill. The lead researcher, Dr. Susan Lakoski* reported at that time, “While poor fitness is already known to predict future cardiovascular disease, this is the first study to explore fitness as a marker of future cancer risk prognosis,” (*Susan Lakoski, M.D., assistant professor of medicine and director of the cardiovascular prevention program for cancer patients at the University of Vermont/Fletcher Allen Health Care.)

An Objective Android / apple Product User Gives Apple A Clear Win In This Category…

Disclosure- I’m an iPad owner (which I love), an LG G3 Android cell phone user (which I love), and a Windows PC user (Love Windows 7, Not a Fan Of Windows 8)

A couple of years ago Apple decided to change their charging/data cable to the current lightening cable.  At the time people everywhere who owned previous generation Apple products suddenly were going to have many Apple peripherals  that would be rendered obsolete once they upgraded to the new connection type.  I’m sure that it was a difficult decision but one that Apple designers knew was going to make the connection more stable and secure.

image

So now being on my third android phone and this isn’t just android products, it’s more the connection type- every android phone I’ve used within a year of the upgrade the charging cable connection becomes loose and I have to wiggle and place the phone just right and often times it beeps back and forth signaling I have a connection to the charger and then not a connection to the charger and then a connection.  It is maddening and now that I’m on the third phone using this type of connection I see it is not the phone as much as it is the connection type.

In any case, Apple’s lightening cable is without question a superior form factor.

So there you go from an objective android/apple user.  Has anyone else had similar experiences with micro usb charging cables (the charging cable used for android phones)

Good news in Gloucester Schools From Aria McElhenny

Hi joey-
Wanted to share some good things happening in the Gloucester Public Schools. Local artists are visiting every school in the district to do amazing hands-on art projects with kids. The Artistic Bridges program is funded by Gloucester Education Foundation and coordinated by Cape Ann Museum. Kids are getting to learn about what it’s like to be a professional artist, and schools are connecting with the artistic community in a great new way. And everyone’s having FUN!

Painter Loren Doucette is working with West Parish second graders to create the “ABC’s of Gloucester.” The students are drawing Gloucester landmarks beginning with every letter of the alphabet that will be pulled together to make a collaborative art piece. Can’t wait to see it!

Collage Artist Hans Pundt is working with East Gloucester students to create personal collages. The kids are collecting objects and pictures that represent themselves and their heritage to make self portrait collages.

Please Donate To The GoFundMe Page For Gloucester Marine Dan Cary Who Was Shot and..

Please share this post via facebook and/or twitter because this GoFundme campaign can have a direct impact on helping the family financially through a difficult emotional time and please continue to send encouraging messages to Dan.

Tina Russell shared with us this news last night-

Thank you everyone for your kind words. We live in an amazing community. Danny is improving. He’s been moved out of ICU!!

If you value community and appreciate the sacrifices made by servicemen and women and their families, then when something like this happens maybe think about helping out those families most in need.
Here’s a link to The Dan Cary GoFundMe Page where you can help.
I’d also like to note that Josie Cary and her family entrusted GoodMorningGloucester to share the treasured audio tapes of her Grandfather Cigar Joe who recounted his incredible stories of fishing out of Gloucester in the early twentieth century. You can hear those here-
Treasured Audio-Gloucester History Cigar Joe Talks About Fishing In the Early Part of The Twentieth Century Part VI
Donate To Dan Cary’s GoFundMe Page here- Helping the Carys

Tonight the Cary family received devastating news that their son Dan was shot in the abdomen. Dan is in the marine core and is based in Georgia. Dan is a proud marine and his family and friends are extremely proud of him. I am asking friends, family, strangers to help this family during this difficult time. Dan is a proud marine serving our country. We don’t know how long his recovery will be. If anyone knows Josie she is the first person to be there to help someone in need. I am asking people just to help while they are with their son during this difficult time. No amount is too little. Thank you everyone for your support!
helpingthecarys
This young man is Marine Dan Cary born and raised in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He was shot in the back and sustained injuries there and into his abdomen by a powerful M16 while stationed in Georgia. The injuries are many.

He has undergone a second surgery to repair damages and is still in critical condition. He needs more surgery tomorrow; it will be his third one.

Throughout this horrific ordeal it would benefit Dan to receive the support of his community and beyond. His mother reads to him messages from Facebook and although he is intubated, unable to speak, he is able to let her know he likes hearing the messages.

Let us each send a message to Dan showing our support and a willingness to pray that he heals, gets strong and comes home soon.

Permission is granted to circulate by his Aunt Tina Russell. God Bless Dan Cary, his family and all of you for taking the time to read this and respond to one of our soldiers.

If you have any questions or want more detail, and there is much detail, contact Tina Russell via Facebook. Thank you for considering posting this…we want as much support as possible for our native son.

Hi Joey,

The Cape Ann Theatre Collaborative is producing an evening of two comedic one acts by James McClure.

‘1959 Pink Thunderbird’ takes place in Maynard, Texas, where we meet folks longing for the past and happier times. The characters in these two well-crafted 45 minute plays, stumble clumsily, lovingly, and laughably into adulthood, leaving behind the illusion of their identity and discovering what matters most in life.

Performances are: Thursday 4/9, Friday 4/10, Saturday 4/11, Sunday 4/12 @ 3pm Thursday 4/16, Friday 4/17, Saturday 4/18

Thursday, Friday & Saturday performances @ 7:30

Sunday performance @ 3pm

General admission $20

Purchase your tickets on-line via Ticket Stage

You can also mail us at catcollab@gmail.com to reserve tickets.

Thanks Joey.
