East Gloucester Map, 1884 from Pat Dalpiaz
Joey–I am attaching a couple of pictures I thought you might find interesting. Several years ago, I bought this map at Dogtown Books and had it framed. My dad grew up on Haskell Street which is why I picked this map out of all he had to offer at the bookstore.
These pictures are taken through the clear covering the framers used and therefore not as clear as they might be otherwise. Still, I thought you and others at GMG might like to see a little piece of East Gloucester, 1884! I think it’s pretty cool.
You can see others here. This is Plate 5. http://www.historicmapworks.com/Atlas/US/6812/Gloucester+and+Rockport+1884/
I follow GMG and appreciate all your efforts along with your hard working crew of volunteers! Pat Dalpiaz

Cadet Elizabeth Schuster (center), with Lt. Matthew Landry, USN (left), Sea Cadet New England Regional Director, and Ens. Philip Strauch, NSCC (right), Commanding Officer of the Sea Cadet Division based in Gloucester.
Local High School Student Graduates from Sea Cadet Recruit Training
Gloucester resident receives top honor in Naval Sea Cadet Recruit Training
Elizabeth Schuster, age 14 of Gloucester, a member of the David G. Ouellet Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC), recently completed a two-week recruit training at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. At this training, Schuster joined over 200 other young women and men from across New England in completing a rigorous program, which is based on the U.S. Navy’s recruit training curriculum. Sea Cadet boot camp is designed for youth and instills teamwork, discipline and leadership skills in participants.
At the end of this challenging two-week training, Schuster was named Honor Graduate from her group of 40 peers. This award is extremely competitive and granted only to a cadet who displays top performance in several key areas, including leadership, teamwork, motivation and accountability.
During the two-week training, Schuster’s activities included swim qualifications, military drill, damage control, and physical training. “It was a very challenging two weeks, but I met so many great people from around the country and I learned a lot,” Schuster said. Schuster is the daughter of Michael and Heidi Schuster of Gloucester and granddaughter of Louis and Wendy McGrath of Gloucester and Robert and Helen Schuster of
Edinboro, PA.
The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a federally chartered non-profit civilian youth organization for young people, ages 11 through 17 and is supported by both the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. Every year cadets participate in training opportunities such as Navy Special Warfare, SCUBA, field and medical training, photojournalism, military police science and sailing. The program teaches them how to successfully lead groups of their peers and will also inspire them to become leaders in their schools and communities.
The local Sea Cadet unit in Gloucester is currently accepting applications for the 2015-2016 school year. Gloucester Sea Cadets train at the U.S. Coast Guard station two Sundays a month, and also at The Village Training Field in Danvers, MA. For more information, please contact ENS Phillip Strauch at pstrauch@gloucesterseacadets.org or visit the program’s website at www.seacadets.org

Any media outlet That Criticizes Marty Walsh On Not Giving In And Guaranteeing Cost Overruns For The Olympics Are What’s Wrong with Media
All the headlines are about how Boston bungled the Olympic Bid process. the headline should be that Boston Mayor Marty Walsh refused to give in and guarantee Cost Over-runs that would have burdened the city. Anyone that doesn’t see that the Olympics completely screw the cities with huge bills for building monstrous facilities that never end up getting used are deaf dumb and blind.
So instead of criticizing Marty Walsh for how he handled it, I say he should be lauded for being financially responsible with the taxpayers money. More elected officials should follow his lead.
Say what you will but these same media outlets would have skewered him way worse when the bills came due for the cost over-rides for inevitable mess that the Olympics would have made the City of Boston.
here’s the poll Nichole put up when we heard about the bid-

Art in Dogtown?
Robert Maselek submits-
If anybody is wondering where their stuffed animals have run off to, I spotted the aftermath of a stuffed animal party in Dogtown…art installation? Runaways? Just wondering if any GMG readers have any idea
Peter Digre submits-
The salt sea was frozen on her breast,
The salt tears in her eyes
And he saw her hair, like the brown seaweed,
On billows fall and rise.
Such was the wreak of the Hesperus,
In the midnight and the snow,
Christ save us all from a death like this,
On the reef of Norman’s Woe.
Good morning, Joey.
We drove through a turn-around-if-you-have-any-sense downpour near Essex to find perfect dinner weather at the Harriet Webster Pier. This was our second time at The Evening in White, and we recognized many of the same people from last year, which only added to this year’s experience.
