Driftwood

Beautiful piece of driftwood on GHB last night. Driftwood really is a natural blank canvas. I should’ve brought it home and made a “Welcome Pirates” sign like I used to do with my Dad when I was little. Glue some seashells, a little marker, add some old line, hang it by the front door and Voila,  instant Pirate greeter!

(If you look closely you can see my polar bear playing in the waves.)

Caution Regarding Sewer Treatment Disks

Alert from the City of Gloucester:

Caution Regarding Sewer Treatment Disks — Update March 15, 2011

Thousands of discharged disks from the Hookset, NH wastewater treatment plant have washed up on local shores including Coffins Beach, Wingaersheek Beach, Long Beach and private areas along the coastline.

The city is formulating its clean up plan, and in all likelihood will require the assistance of citizen volunteers.

If disks are handled, rubber gloves must be worn and hands should be washed or sanitized immediately afterwards. Disks can be placed in plastic bags and dropped off at the Dept. of Public Works on Poplar St. for disposal.

Please keep pets away from the disks.

You can get  further updates from the city of Gloucester website.

Washed Ashore

Washed ashore on Wingaersheek.
Question for Joey and the rest of the lobstermen out there…
Are the traps ever reclaimed? Is there a way to tell who the trap belongs too?

Ellis Island Passenger Search

The Ellis Island Foundation now offers free online searches of passengers that have immigrated to America through Ellis Island. It’s free, you just have to sign up!  www.ellisisland.org

I was able to find my Grandfather, Great Aunt and Great Grandparents. The site gives you a passenger record, passenger manifests and even images and information about the ship. You can purchase copies of the documentations through the Ellis Island Foundation. Tip: when searching you may want to try different name spellings in order to find your family.

My Grandfather was born in the US, but as a child went back with his mother and sister to Italy for medical care and ended up staying until WWI ended. This documents their return trip. Such a fun way to discover your family’s history!

This is my Grandfather’s passenger record:

How to make Snow Angels

Coconut shows us how to make snow angels (really she just doesn’t like wearing her winter coat). Please excuse my sniffle sounds 🙂

Native Shrimp

If you don’t already know, the native shrimp are in!

For New Year’s Eve, I tried something new and made Ceviche with native shrimp and scallops. It was delicious! While  I was cleaning the shrimp for the ceviche, I noticed how beautiful the eggs were.  I had to take a pic to share with GMG readers.

They are ice blue, like the color of glaciers!

And here is the final Ceviche:

Christmas tree is up!

A beautiful Christmas tree from Wolf Hill!
I’m almost done decorating. It’s so fun to go through all the ornaments and the memories that go along with them.

Happy Birthday Joey!!

Gonna Party Like It’s Your Birthday!

Gonna Drink Sunny D and Folly Cove Rum Like It’s Your Birthday!

Cuz we don’t give a fu2k cuz it’s your birthday!

Can you identify this?

I found this piece of glass on Good Harbor this weekend. It clearly says Rockport, but I can’t figure out what it is from. Anyone know? I was thinking maybe a twin lights soda bottle? It’s still sharp around the edges, so I think it must have been broken recently.
