The largest gross stock and gross a st share made by a Gloucester fishing boat for several ycars, was that made yesterday by the local auxiliary fishing dragger Benjamin C., Capt. Joseph Ciaramitaro, 33 ycars, y Washington square, yesterday. The drag-ger arrived al Boston Fish Pier and sold her trip of 198,500 pounds of groundfish for $17,300. Each of the 12-man crew are reported to have re-reived a gross share of $733.

“Capt. Walter Beatteay, lairaed here this morning, the largest fare of redfish ever landed anywhere, hailing for 250,000 pounds redfish and 20,000 pounds’ of other groundfish. The trip was sold to Gorton-Pew Fisheries Co. Ltd., and the craft should stock in the vicinity of $i2,000.

Make The Library One of Your HOliday Stops!

I hadn’t been to the temporary home of the Sawyer Free Library at 21 Main St in Gloucester yet so I stopped by to load up on reading material for the long Thanksgiving weekend. I didn’t expect much out of the smaller space they moved into while renovations were happening but I was pleasantly surprised with what has been done with the space that is available. The space is well staffed, nicely laid out and offers most of the amenities we are accustomed to. There were several patrons there as I wandered around checking things out. The biggest and best surprise (for me) was that the local history department is up and running with at least some of their most popular materials. For me, it’s the microfilmed Gloucester Daily Times! Thanks library staff for making the space pleasant for patrons once again. Don’t be hesitant to give it a try for yourself!

AP reports:

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Environmental groups are once again at odds with politicians and fishermen in New England in the wake of a decision by high-end retail giant Whole Foods to stop selling Maine lobster.

Whole Foods recently said that it will stop selling lobster from the Gulf of Maine at hundreds of its stores around the country. The company cited decisions by a pair of sustainability organizations to take away their endorsements of the U.S. lobster fishing industry.

The organizations, Marine Stewardship Council and Seafood Watch, both cited concerns about risks to rare North Atlantic right whales from fishing gear. Entanglement in gear is one of the biggest threats to the whales.

The decision by Whole Foods was an “important action to protect the highly endangered” whale, said Virginia Carter, an associate with the Save America’s Wildlife Campaign at Environment America Research & Policy Center.

Common Crow on Eastern Ave may not immediately come to mind when you are thinking about holiday shopping, but it’s definitely worth a stop. You will find special (and regular) grocery items for holiday treats as well as an assortment of gift items for all members of your household. I am always surprised by the variety of items available on their shelves. The employees are very friendly and helpful. I asked for something and the worker went into the back to retrieve something for me which I very much appreciated. I went in seeking a specific item and came out with another holiday chore crossed off my list, thank you very much!
