Pigeon looking for a home

Hi Joe,

I’ve attached a photo of a pigeon that has taken up residence under my bird feeder at 2 Banjo Way in West Gloucester. It’s been here a  few days now. It’s obviously used to people as it walks right up to me when I’m in the yard and he has a couple of bands on his legs.

I’m hoping that one of your readers knows something about pigeons and can come collect him before a coyote gets him.

Thanks Miles

  1. Miles, Wondering if you’ve received help for the pigeon? Looks like you have a homing/racing pigeon who has lost its way, and may just be exhausted. If it has bird seed and water in a bowl on the ground, it may just re-charge itself and leave for home on its own after having a good rest. The band on its leg probably has identification to get it back to its owner. If you can entice him to come to you with some birdseed in your hand, pick him up and read the band on his leg. If no local ID, go to the web site for the American Pigeon Racing Union, pigeon.org, for info on reading the band and reporting the bird. Or, call Essex Bird Supply on Eastern Ave. They may know of a local homing pigeon club or someone who raises the birds. If the pigeon won’t come to you with birdseed, you can probably just throw a towel over it and pick it up gently to read the band. Best wishes!

  2. Hi Julie,
He has disappeared as of this morning. Hopefully, he was just tired and needed a few days rest before continuing on his way. Thanks for the info in case he comes back.
