Spring Tour 2022

It’s right around the corner.  Literally, you can walk or drive down the street or up the highway and enjoy some of the most engaging artists in the region. 

It’s the 39^th year of the Cape Ann Artisans Open Studio Tour and 16 artists spread across 15 studios are looking forward to welcoming art lovers from near and far. Open studios are Saturday June 4-Sunday June 5 10AM-5PM daily. Enjoy pottery, painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media, mosaics, weaving, sea glass, encaustic, and fine jewelry art. Cant make the tour? Check individual artist websites year round for hours and appointments.

John Abisamra “My real passion is to capture the beauty of Cape Ann and its magical light through my camera. I try to capture the uniqueness each season brings.I particularly enjoy photographing during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset and also am drawn to images where nature and man made elements meet. Photography for me is all about capturing a moment in time which may never be repeated.”  Visit his website here. Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco Jacqueline has continued to expand her Cape Ann Designs portfolio, adding more statement pendants to the Line in the Sand collection.   She’s also created a line of brooches called “minis” that are smaller and lighter to wear in the summer.  She has also introduced an e-Commerce capability on her website. Melody Phaneuf “As a visual artist, I appreciate looking at things, particularly old, tarnished, abandoned things. I collect objects that I can’t resist for paintings. This is a peculiar activity for a person who hates clutter. Nonetheless, my fascination with chronicling visual experience and enthusiasm for storytelling compels me.” Read more here. We went to Jalapenos on Main Street recently because we enjoy the food and the atmosphere, but also because they were hosting a fundraiser for the Gloucester High Softball team. There was quite a robust turnout and I hope the team met their goal. It’s really nice to see local businesses helping locals reach their goals. I am proud to know that many of Gloucester’s businesses support the community in so many ways.

I tried the steak fajitas and Jim had pork carnitas. I love the salsa and chips (cannot stop munching on those!) and my favorite is a frozen raspberry margarita. Thanks Jalapenos!

Going green…

I am a sucker for spring flowers, in particular tulips so I jumped on the opportunity to visit the Spring Bloomfest at the Stevens Coolidge House and Gardens in North Andover recently. Things have changed there since my last visit about 4 years ago, so it took me a minute to realize I had visited this very festival earlier. Honestly I was a little underwhelmed by the spring blossoms but delighted by the rainbow-ribbon themed decorations which seem so very appropriate for a spring day.

The Bloomfest is sold out but soon (May 16) the grounds will be open for normal admission and you might want to give it a try. The house is open to the public and there’s a thorough self guided tour you can take advantage of. Plenty of helpful staff is also available. But if it’s mostly tulips you love, take a stroll on the boulevard!

The nose is fruity and floral and offers much finesse and elegance with notes of bananas, pineapple, white flowers and candied fruit. Tormaresca Torcicoda Primitivo del Salento, IGT, Apulia, It., 2019, Alc. 15.0% (offering 3 bottles of 2016, historic vintage), Varietals: 100% Primitivo, Tasting: Torcicoda is characterized by an intense ruby red color. The nose opens with fruity hints of cherries, strawberries and licorice, enriched with pleasant spicy notes. Patz & Hall, Sonoma North Coast, CA. Pinot Noir, 2018, Alc. 14.5%
Varietals: Pinot Noir,  Tasting: Eighteen small, independent family-owned vineyard sites come together in this gorgeous display of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. This is an approachable Pinot Noir showing alluring freshness and purity. The nose displays intense aromas of Bing cherry, strawberry, dried rose petal and licorice notes. Nicely dense and full on the palate, the fresh acidity and bright red fruit flavors resolve on a juicy, detailed finish.
