The Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC) invited New England artists to enter a juried exhibition, BEYOND LIKENESS: Exploring the Portrait. The resulting exhibition features 33 artists from 15 towns both nearby and from as far away as Providence RI.

Often overlooked in favor of landscapes and seascapes, BEYOND LIKENESS provides an important opportunity to look at contemporary interpretations of portraiture. The works in BEYOND LIKENESS examine the genre of portraiture with traditional renditions and dramatic self-portraits in oil paint, watercolor, color pencil, charcoal, Polaroid emulsion and more. Viewers may recognize a subject or two!

BEYOND LIKENESS runs for six weeks beginning Thursday, April 2, 2020 and continues through Sunday, May 10 at the Cultural Center on Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street in East Gloucester. Open each Thursday through Sunday, noon-4:00 PM in both galleries at the Cultural Center.

The public is invited to meet the artists at the Opening Reception on Saturday, April 4, 2-4:00 PM. Visitors have the opportunity to vote for their favorite portrait to receive the Viewers’ Choice Award. Three artists receiving the most votes will be recognized at the closing celebration on Sunday, May 10 at 3:00 PM.  These awards provide the organization with important feedback and appreciation from the community for the artists.
