John Abisamra Gallery 53

John Abisamra submits “Yesterday was the opening reception for Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck. New juried members from Gloucester include Melissa Cox and myself as photographers. There was a huge turnout for the event. Gallery 53 will remain open though mid October and has 28 artists displaying/selling their work. It’s right in the heart of Rocky Neck between the Rudder and Studio restaurants.  Great place to visit to see some magnificent art work!! I have attached a photo of my work and there are additional photos on the Gallery 53  website. The current Gallery 53 exhibit is entitled BLUE. Thanks for getting the word out about Gallery 53 through Good Morning Gloucester!”

Barns Along the Byway

I have noticed some very interesting looking barns along the Essex Scenic Byway. I love barns that seem to tell their own story. The spring light certainly helps! As our friend Donna Ardizzoni says: it’s all about the light. She inspired me to experiment with softening photos.

Spring Barley Risotto

Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC loves a healthier alternative to the more traditional arborio risotto rice, barley adds iron and fiber to this fresh take on risotto. One cup of the green peas found in this dish offers more protein than a large egg.

Serves 4
2 Tablespoons oiive oil
1 cup pearled barley
2 leeks, white and green parts only, thinly sliced
½ cup white wind or water
2 cups water
Coarse salt and fresh ground pepper
14 ½ ounces vegetable broth
1 bunch of asparagus (about 1 pound) trimmed and cut in 2 inch pieces
1 box frozen peas defrosted (or fresh)
½ cup fresh grated parmesan

In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium heat. Add Barley and leeks and cook until it begins to soften about 5 to 7 minutes. Add ½ cup wine or water and cook for another 5 minutes and water…

CRANE BEACH PIPING PLOVER UPDATE FROM TRUSTEES OF RESERVATIONS JEFF DENONCOURT

Trustees of Reservations ecologist Jeff Denoncour kindly shares information about the Piping Plovers at Crane Beach and he wrote two days ago with an update for us on their Piping Plover population. “Unfortunately the weather has been pretty inclement this year making it tough to monitor and really nail down the number of pairs. That mixed with an abundance of birds and a lot of loss due to storms and high tides and a bit of predation its really hard for me to get an accurate pair count right now. I am estimating that we have more than 33 plover pairs.

So far we have discovered 36 plover nests, but right now we only have 19 active nests. 3 of the 36 nests are renests, which is why I’m saying we have 33 or more pairs. Some pairs have been scraping consistently in areas but have not laid eggs.

Our first nest is due to hatch tomorrow.”

I sent him an email this morning and hopefully we’ll have news of hatchlings!
