Firstly, a lot of people drink coffee. And Korean cafes cater well also for people who are not coffee-drinkers, with various fruit concoctions, chocolate based drinks and whatever else they can think of. Coffee consumption in Korea is the largest in Asia and is still growing rapidly.

Secondly, cafe culture is a big thing. People like going to cafes, not just for the food and drink, but many enjoy going to cafes that boast special themes or interiors (dog cafes, cat cafes, bird cafes, tortoise cafe (in singular, because I’ve only ever seen one of such a type), study cafes, book cafes, comic cafes, comic AND cat cafes, board game cafes, handcrafting cafes, blind cafes, origami cafes, you think it, it exists…). As much as people care about the coffee, people care about how the cafe looks and feels, and many cafes strive for individualism and art. Also, many artists, especially in areas like Hapjeong, just own a cafe on the side of what they do, using it almost as a studio or gallery space for whatever they might want to display. A cafe is much more of a multi-purpose space in Korea than is in other countries.

Thirdly, ‘going out’ is always in steps. This is also largely to do with a lack of a three course meal structure in Korea. When I meet my friends, we go for dinner, and then the next step from there is to move to a cafe. Many Korean restaurants don’t have dessert menus, because a dessert is not a given in Korean cuisine or Korean eating habits. A cafe therefore, almost always features at some point in eating or going out. At other times its functions are replaced by bars, which I’m sure you’ve noticed there are lots of in Korea also.
