It would be great to know of the history of development on the island. All I know is the photos are fascinating, but 10 pound has looked much the same (not accounting for vegetation growth) in the 30-odd years I have been visiting Gloucester. When were the structures removed, and why? Not that anything was scheduled to replace them!

Hi Bob See the previous post (EDITED) VISITOR ACCESSIBILITY TO TEN POUND ISLAND FOR THE BETTERMENT OF OUR COMMUNITY AND BELOVED WILDLIFE. It doesn’t answer all your questions but a Ten Pound Island Time Line is provided. Yes, in 1665, the city used fire to raze the remaining buildings, with the exception of the lighthouse.

that’s a pretty short airstrip! how did anything take off? unless there was more at low tide…

That is likely a seaplane and that is not an airstrip but a ramp.

Could they fit another thing on it, how did the buildings come down? A fire?
