  1. It would be great to know of the history of development on the island. All I know is the photos are fascinating, but 10 pound has looked much the same (not accounting for vegetation growth) in the 30-odd years I have been visiting Gloucester. When were the structures removed, and why? Not that anything was scheduled to replace them!

It doesn’t answer all your questions but a Ten Pound Island Time Line is provided. Yes, in 1665, the city used fire to raze the remaining buildings, with the exception of the lighthouse.
