Blizzard of ’69, Gloucester

a8945_402wm copyForty six years ago, almost to the day, the Blizzard of 1969 visited us. It dropped a mere 20 inches of snow. This is Gloucester’s DPW yard on Poplar Street, with National Guard and police vehicles in the yard and on the street. I think I see an armored personnel carrier on the right. The so-called “Lindsay Blizzard” killed 94 people. Mother Nature has a way of repeating herself, as does history.

  1. I well remember that blizzard. We were living in Queens and Barbara was quite pregnant with Ann. Just like Boston last week, everything stopped for a few days. And, just like Boston last week, the mayor, (John Lindsay) was blamed for it all.
The criticism was so severe that months later Lindsay lost the Republican primary. However, he went on to win reelection on the Liberal Party line.

Incidentally, it was often said about the Liberal Party that is was neither liberal nor a party.

In any event, these are cautionary tales for all who serve us in public office during these challenging times. For one, I appreciate and thank them for their efforts.

  2. In 1977 I was working for the city as a temporary helper when I was fresh out of High School. There was a F.W.D. truck with a snow blower attachment that the city had bought right after the storm of 69 that was never used, still in the garage. It had “literally” no miles on it and there was the price written on the windshield by someones finger in the dust, I believe it was $27,000.00. Everyone complained about how much money was wasted on that. ( Pretty cheap by today’s standards.) Little did they know that another big storm would hit in the near future. I don’t think it was ever used, and It probably went away with all the equipment when it was disposed of, when the city went to their leasing program, Remember that poor decision?
