OK Kim, What is this Monster Moth?

  1. Marty, I think you have male Black Witch Moth (Ascalapha odorata). Although a tropical species, they are strong flyers and it would be logical one would make its way to the Keys. It looks in perfect condition (newly emerged) so maybe there is a resident colony where you are located.

    They sure are gorgeous–females even more so, with lavender iridescence.

  2. I think that’s a male Black Witch moth. In Mexico they call it a Death Moth. It has a lot of creepy superstitions associated with it. The female moth has white stripes.
