The first photo is of a model of the Baldwin at Cape Ann Museum. The second is my painting from a 1900 photo which shows the Granite Sloop Albert Baldwin, Capt. William H. Poland ariving at Boston’s north end with a full load of blocks and pavers from Rockport Granite Co. She is loaded to full capacity and even in the calm of the harbor, the water is sloshing through her scuppers and over her deck and the pumps are gong full force.
The Baldwin was known along the New England Coast as the “floating ledge” and Poland as a driver. He often remarked that he knew when he was getting the most from his sloop when the seawater was sloshing over his boots. The 86ft. sloop was built in 1890 at the James & Tarr shipyard in Essex.
