Melissa Garabedian writes-

Hey Joey!

Congrats on being named BONS Best Blog Editors Choice and Best Blog Readers Choice – well deserved!

I’m sure you’ve probably already saw it, but Cape Ann Museum launched a new website which we are officially announcing today. The site was designed by Plein Air Interactive from Portland Maine. Plein Air specializes in creating websites for museums and cultural organizations.

The new website extends the unique and engaging Cape Ann Museum experience onto the web and social media channels. It allows people to easily be in contact with all aspects of the Museum such as how to visit, exhibitions, events, programs, research and more!

FYI – you don’t want to miss the next Music in the Courtyard series next Friday, July 27 from 4-5pm featuring Allen Estes! Allen Estes brings his unique blend of country, rock ‘n’ roll and folk to the Cape Ann Museum’s summer music series. An opening act for Bonnie Raitt, J Geils, Tim McGraw, America, Jose Feliciano, Reba McEntire, Waylon Jennings, Kenny Chesney, Tricia Yearwood and more, Allen Estes is a performer you don’t want to miss! This program is free and open to the public. In case of rain this program will be held inside the Museum.

Thanks again for your continued support and interest in the Cape Ann Museum! Talk to you soon!

Best,

Melissa

Kay Ellis writes-

Hi Joey,
Any chance you could give a plug for our Bluegrass Music Sunset Sail on Friday night?

We will give $5/off per ticket if the caller mentions they saw it on GMG when they call for reservations.
I know we have to come up with another date for Cigars and Rum too.
Thanks, Kay

More Farmer’s Market craze

Thursday, 3-6:30 at Stage Fort Park! Don’t miss it! It’s not just food (as if delicious local food were not a sufficient reason to go…); there are also people selling cookbooks, pottery, and art; plus there are art activities for the kids, run by teens from Art Haven.

One of the things I like most about the Farmer’s Market is that the people who are selling things there are usually closely involved in the production of what they sell.  That makes a world of difference; you can see that they are proud of what they are selling, they really know it inside and out, and they are convinced of its value. Their enthusiasm is contagious!  And they often offer free samples.  So, be forewarned: you are likely to spend more money than you planned to.  But that’s OK, it’s supporting the local economy!

Here are some photos from last week. Click on the block of thumbnails to see a slideshow, or scroll down to see some of the photos larger without leaving the post.

Update To The Nike Make Me Some Dri-Fit Boxer- Briefs Post

Attention Nike: Make Me Up Some Dri-Fit Boxer Briefs Stat

Some of you kind readers are sending in links to what I would call compression shorts which are made out of a similar material to Nike Dri-Fit material but I should probably explain why this is no where near what I’m talking about.

I’m trying to let my boys hang free.  I’m not looking to mash my junk all up inside my body cavity like those spandex wearing cyclists who are looking for a .00000001 percent time savings in their bike next race.

There was a spirited conversation on twitter on the subject yesterday.

When asked how many pairs you would commit to buying here are the responses-

I’m looking for comfort and I don’t want my nuts on a hot sweaty day stuck to my leg.  As I’ve gotten older let’s just say that the boys don’t hang as high and tight as they used to.  So I’d like a little room for them to hang out and not be all smashed up in my shorts, know what I mean?

I also don’t want pink, purple, navy blue lime green, polka dotted or any combination of the sort.  I want white.  The way underwear is supposed to be.

Who in the world needs that kind of gap underneath their ball bag?  I don’t need  a shelf, I just need the classic boxers.  I’m thinking those grey ones are made for eunuchs.

So Nike, if you’re listening just think of a classic style boxer short but made out of your awesome Dri-Fit moisture wicking material.  Not hard to whip up is it?

Gloucester Jazz Singers In Danvers From Terry Weber

Stopped by Ponte Vecchio restaurant in Danvers on Sunday night and Gloucester folks Barbara and Al Boudreau were singing and playing in a jazz band there. Really enjoyed the show (and the food!). Barbara sings and Al sings, as well as plays the drums. Their duets are kind of fun as they sing about their (mostly comical) ups and downs of being married.  They also host an occasional jazz Supper Club at the Gloucester House and other North shore locations. To check out their upcoming schedule you can visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Barbara-Al-Boudreau-Quartet/88511732526. (The sax player is Billy Novick of Lexington)

Bennington Writers Read

Wednesday, July 18th at 7:30 pm @GWC

Come hear Patricia Sutherland and Charlotte Coe Lemann. Patricia will read from an essay of her memoir, I Belong To Glasgow, which was recently published in Consequence Magazine. Charlotte will read from her current manuscript, To Bear the Beams of Love, to be completed by her 80th birthday, a year from now.

Vincent Katz & Vivien Bittencourt

July 25, 2012 7:30 pm @GWC

Vincent and Vivian will use Charles Olson’s Maximus Poems, in

tandem with the poet’s biography, to make an examination of

place and time. As they have done in the past when researching

locales related to the Roman poet Sextus Propertius, so in

Gloucester they will use Maximus, plus other writings, as a map

to trace locales of importance to Olson.

2012 Reid’s Ride Photos From Tina Ketchopolos

Joey:  Here are some photos from Reid’s Ride in memory of Reid Sacco that took place yesterday from Lynnfield ending at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester.

Reid’s parents Gene and Lorraine Sacco of Lynnfield began this event in memory of their son Reid R. Sacco.  They are an incredible parents with lots of support from wonderful family members and friends.

The ride is a 28-mile Bike-a-thon , a fun and rewarding way to support clinical and scientific research into finding more  treatments — and someday a cure — for the cancers that predominantly strike adolescents and young adults. Cyclists of all ages and abilities pedal their way from Lynnfield to Cape Ann in what is the primary fund-raising event for the Reid Sacco Memorial Foundation.  The event registration fees, sponsorships and donations benefit the Reid Sacco Memorial Cancer Research Fund, and this fund supports clinical and research programs in the area of young adult cancers. The Foundation’s mission is to improve the outlook for this population of cancer patients, a population that has been tragically underserved by recent advances in cancer treatment.

Sacco was born July 24, 1984, which is intentionally close to the ride date. Sacco’s goal was to ride in a bike-a-thon to prevent young adult cancer, but cancer took his life before he achieved that desire. He died June 16, 2005 at the age of 20.   Reid was enrolled at Columbia University to study Chemical Engineering

In late June 2012, the Reid R. Sacco AYA Program at Tufts Medical Center was announced – the program includes the establishment this summer of the Reid R. Sacco Adolescent & Young Adults Clinic for Cancer and Blood Diseases, as well as the establishment of the Reid R. Sacco AYA Fund to support educational initiatives at Tufts.   This extraordinary achievement was made possible by your participation in Reid’s Ride over the years.

This year’s Reid Rice raised over $100,000. with donations still coming in!

ArtRocks! Paul Frontiero with some Adoring Fans

“Melen” (Mary Helen) Landergren found one of Paul’s ArtRocks by Good Harbor Beach in September.  For Christmas, she gave it to Nancy Silva, her best friend of 38 years, who had long wanted an ArtRock.  MH is also married to Don called D, Nancy’s brother, and their son was one of the unsuccessful videotaped searchers looking for the rock hidden at Capt. Joe & Sons that Patti Keenan’s husband found (if you remember that incredibly funny video, featuring some historic Ed Collard footage).  It has been a family mission to find an ArtRock.  They came to Mug Up Sunday so they could meet the famous Paul Frontiero, Jr. and thank him in person.  I love stories with happy endings, don’t you!

What’s Cookin on Amazon

What’s Cookin, 185 Washington Street http://wcgloucester.com/.  Brian Rice is a great cook, and an all around great guy.

They say, “If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen” — and that’s fine because you don’t want to spend all day baking during a 90-degree heatwave anyway. Savor outstanding grub without all the roasting when you grab today’s deal from What’s Cookin’?: $15 for $30 to spend on prepared meals, sandwiches, soups, and more.

Opened in 2011, this Gloucester eatery has proven to be a cut above the rest by specializing in creative dishes made from locally sourced North Shore produce and seafood. Enjoy a new twist on classic dishes like a chicken salad sandwich with cranberries, scallions, and toasted almonds, or a portabella panini on crusty ciabatta. Whether you want to pick up a fresh-made lunch or a prepared entrée to take home for dinner (we love the pulled pork with homemade barbecue sauce), you’d better grab this sizzling deal while it’s still hot.

Cape Ann by Air

These are some great aerial shots of Rocky Neck and Annisquam taken by Tom Bernie of Gloucester, from his cool little red plane that he built.  The 1st shot is of Tom ready to take off from NH, the 2nd shot is one I took of him flying over Rocky Neck, and the bottom shot is one he took of Smiths Cove with me standing on the dock behind Madfish Grille shooting him.  He didn’t know I was there, and I was returning from shooting the Picton Castle when I heard the plane and looked up in time catch him.  The moral of this post is, wherever you go and whatever you are doing, you never know when someone might be photographing you, so smile – you’re on candid camera! – especially on Cape Ann.

Gloucester Harbor Walk ~ What a Difference! Construction Phase Accomplished in Only a Few Months!

Congratulations and thank you to Mayor Kirk,  Sarah Garcia, Chris Muskopf, Jay Ramsey, and including everyone involved (there are many, many more than named here–these are the people I have had the pleasure to work with on the project) for having the vision, courage, tenacity, and talent to create Gloucester’s Harbor Walk.

Gloucester Harbor Walk ~  View of Gus Foote Park

The Harbor Walk is nearing completion. Despite the plethora of unforeseeable problems with the landfill at I4-C2, and current drought, the walk looks gorgeous. Come, take a stroll!

Gus Foote Park Last Year at this Time. What a difference–the build phase of the project was accomplished in only a few short months!

I will be bringing GMG readers more ‘before and after’ photos, as well as information about the native plants habitat gardens (and how you can translate that information to your own garden), in the coming months.

Got kids? Take ’em to the Block Party. It’s Free and Fun on Saturday.

I just spoke with Rick Doucett, whom you all know and love from the YMCA.  Rick reminded me that he and his wife, Loren, will be running Kids Town at the Block Party on Saturday (just like last year).   Kid’s Town is between Pleasant St. & Hancock St. near the Sovereign Stage (see map here).

Balloons, face painting, giant chess and more.  Every year kids connect with friends at the Block Party that they haven’t seen in a while (just like adults do).  How many things can you do that are just as much fun for your kids as they are for you?

Speaking of kids, don’t forget Y summer camp is in full swing (see here).

Don’t forget that the Orleans concert on Aug 31 — featuring Gloucester’s own Fly Amero along with Rhode Island’s John Cafferty of the Beaver Brown band and Eddie and the Cruisers movie will help raise money for the North Shore YMCA Summer Camp program.

And just in case you missed Monday’s announcement (click here if you did) Allen Estes will open the show.  You won’t want to miss this!

You and your kids can see Allen Estes at the Block Party on Saturday at the Sargent Stage.

And if we’re lucky,  we may also get to hear Fly sing with his sister at the Franklin Stage.

See Block Party Entertainment Schedule here.
