On Friday night at the Cape Ann Museum, the Gloucester Education Foundation (GEF) held its annual celebration, noting its growth and progress over the past year. Over 100 people attended including teachers, donors, and city officials.
One exciting GEF initiative you’ll be hearing more about in coming weeks is the "Using Technology to Enhance Project-Based Learning" program which will allow students in the program to use iPads to document changes to Gloucester from 1900 to the present day. More details to come!

This is to advise you that the Gloucester City Council will be holding a continued public hearing regarding the removal of parking meters on Main Street, from the intersection of Main and Spring Streets to the intersection of Main and Washington Streets with a two-hour time limit on a pilot basis only from January 1, 2013 through March 31, 2013 inclusive.
The Council vote is to amend the current Ordinance to have free, non-metered parking, on a trial basis, from January 1, 2013 to March 31, 2013. The two-hour time limit and anti-shuffling ordinance will still be in effect during this time period. The intent is two-fold, first to offer residents and businesses a break in the off-season while still maintaining the rules of the time limits and anti-shuffling laws; the second is to see how this trial experiment works as to whether or not this Ordinance can be enforced on a year round basis.
The Police Chief has been asked to attend to explain parking enforcement’s role.
If the trial basis works, the Council may propose to make the amendment a year round law by Ordinance.

The leaves were so "Bright and Yellow" here at our Ski House in Intervale, NH this Saturday morning (Oct. 20, 2012) that it looked like the sun was shining bright. It wasn’t until later in the afternoon. And yes…we do "represent" here at the bar in Intervale.

This Thursday, October 25th at Stage Fort Park there will be the Northeast Conference Conference Meet/Jim Munn Invitational. It brings middle school kids from all over Massachusetts, public schools, private, and home school kids together to compete in one of the biggest meets around. There will be close to 1500 runners competing. As the coach, I am trying to promote the sport of cross country and showcase the hard work our kids have done this season.

I was hired by Varian Semiconductor to produce a time-lapse documentary film of the installation of their wind turbine.
I started shooting this week and I met Fred of Bodin Historic Photo while the hostess was getting me a coffee Gloucester Cruiseport restaurant. He asked me a few questions about the project and then we said goodbye. The next day I walked into his shop and as soon as I entered he exclaimed, "Hey, I met you last night!". We chatted more and then he introduced me to your blog.

Erica Jong (1942- )
A native New Yorker, Jong (née Mann) is best known for her 1973 novel Fear of Flying detailing the self-search of a young woman discovering her sexuality and power. A graduate of Barnard College with a Master’s degree in English Literature from Columbia University, Jong has written more than two dozen books including poetry, novels and non-fiction. She is an active campaigner for equal rights for the LGBT community, and continues to write and speak about the intimate lives of men and women of advancing age. She has been married four times.

Boston Globe correspondent, Wendy Killeen, lists Berklee in Gloucester in her weekly Arts/Entertainment column that appeared in the Globe North today. Excerpt below:
JAZZ ON TAP: Berklee in Gloucester launches its season with a performance by The Jim Odgren Quintet at The Gloucester House on Thursday.
The series of concerts features professors from the Berklee College of Music in Boston and some of their top students. Proceeds benefit the Gloucester2Berklee Scholarship Fund, which helps send students from the city to the music college.
“Given all the Berklee students and alumni who live here, we feel that Berklee is somewhat responsible for Gloucester’s burgeoning music scene,” said Peter Van Ness of gimmeLIVE, producer of this season’s Berklee in Gloucester shows. “Normally, you’d only expect to see these concerts in a big city. You get to catch the best players in the world today as they train the best players of tomorrow.”
The jazz quintet is led by Berklee professors Jim Odgren on alto saxophone and Dave Santoro on acoustic bass. They are joined by Berklee student musicians Roberto Giaquinto on drums, Davis Whitfield on piano, and Lucian Gray on guitar.
