Café Shalom at the Temple Ahavat Achim

Kathy Chapman Video-

Klezwoods, Gloucester, MA November 2012

I made it to the Temple Ahavat Achim (just around the block from where I live) on Saturday for their “Café Shalom”.  I am so glad I did – I kept saying “wow!” to myself for about half an hour after the music was over!

The first band was “The Blueberries”, consisting of Fozzie Hill, Dave Brown, and Wolf Giandes. Great folk/blues vocals and guitar!

Then came Klezwoods, a Boston klezmer band (whose leader, Joseph Kessler, is a Gloucester local).  They play a sort of fusion of traditional klezmer with jazz and other middle-eastern music.  I had no idea what this would be like. Although I expected it to be good, I was still blown away!  They play with fantastic energy and skill.  I bought their CD without hesitation about half-way through their set.

For more photos of both bands, click on the block of thumbnail images below:

Another Café Shalom is scheduled for January 12, 2013. I don’t have the name of the band(s) that will play, but there will be an announcement on GMG before the event.

So good to be back in Gloucester this week, even through the Nor’easter.  Caught a couple of pictures today at the draw bridge.  Fascinated with the house boat coming through the channel with its little chimney puffing out smoke.  Took yet another sunset picture with my iPhone at Niles Beach.  Enjoyed a delightful walk with EJ through Annisquam Village around twilight.  As usual, we loved our time here and will miss it all in the coming months.  The only problem is that I just can’t seem to get enough lobster while we are here.

Blessings, Linda rae and Rob Castagna

I am continuing to do Good Morning Milford (Facebook) for the merchants of our town, thanks to your on-going inspiration.  It filled an important role during the New Jersey and Delaware River Valley hurricane.  We have never had such a venue before and it served to share alerts as the town officials gave me the updates as soon as they had them.  Countless people without electric, water, and heat.  BUT many had smart phones so the could be updated and informed for their safety.  I can’t tell you how grateful I am to be involved in such an endeavor.  Worth every moment of my time.  It is a wonderful feeling to encourage one another with our businesses and life in general.

Harold Burnham Roast From Len Burgess

Friday night’s pot-luck dinner and "Roast of Harold Burnham" to benefit the Essex Shipbuilding Museum was a hilarious success. Plenty of delicious food, a chance to catch up with old friends and enjoy the many funny stories at Harold’s expense. This was a much needed fund raiser for the Museum and we thank all who attended, the many volunteers and, of course, Harold Burnham for allowing it all to happen.

Time & Tide Fine Art in downtown Ipswich is focusing on this inspiring color in a new exhibition "I’m Dreaming…" opening this week. Featuring artists from the North Shore, this stimulating collection features white as a main element, giving the naturally bright gallery an air of lightness and peace. The Holidays Are Coming- You’re Gonna Need a Camera Let Us Help You Decide Which One Best Fits Your Needs

I’m going to give my recommendations based on several categories, but invite you our readers to ask questions and hope our other contributors who have other opinions than mine can chime in with their suggestions as well.  Please feel free to ask a question in the comment section if you would like more information about which camera is best for you.  Add your comments if you have other recommendations as well. We’re here to help!

Best Point and Shoot Sub $200-

Olympus XZ-1 Digital Camera

It has a super fast 1.8 lens and will allow you to capture great photos in low light.  This camera for this price is an excellent value.  It is limited by a not huge zoom but the picture quality is going to be better than anything else in its class for this price.  There are larger zoom cameras out there for this price but these cameras are usually used indoors for birthday parties and such and that fast 1.8 lens is going to capture those moments about 100 times better than a slow point and shoot with a long zoom.

You can get it on Amazon No Tax Here

Best Point and Shoot Super Zoom-

Marty’s Canon SX40 HS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 35x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

What you get here is a very versatile camera that when you have decent amount of light will get you across the Harbor and into someone’s bedroom.  In low light the picture quality will fall apart but for those vacationers who want to zoom in on the action this is a great camera for the price-

Best All Around Value Sub $500-

Sony NEX-5N

Here is a Gallery of Photos I’ve Taken With Mine

The Camera I use is currently being offered for $478 with the kit lens.  I bought one for the Mrs I like mine so much.  It has a large sensor and a ton of cool features in a relatively small footprint.  You can fit it in a jacket pocket but not a jeans pocket.  I like it’s light weight compared to a full sized DSLR.  The lenses for it can be slightly more expensive compared to the full sized DSLR’s like father Matthew’s Sony A65 (an awesome camera in it’s own right).  More lenses are being announced for the NEX series it seems monthly and the prices have been coming down on them.

I would buy the Sony NEX-5N with the kit lens and if I had a little extra pocket change the Sony 35mm 1.8 lens for incredible low light performance in a light weight package.

I paid $689 for mine just a year ago and at the price it is being offered right now, I wouldn’t hesitate a second recommending it.

Buy it here no tax and no questions asked return policy from Amazon-Sony NEX-5N

Best Value DSLR-

Father Matthew’s Sony A65

Here is a Gallery of Photos Father Matthew Has taken With His

The Camera Fr Matthew uses takes pictures that speak for themselves.   It’s a beast and coupled with the 18-135mm lens you‘ll have an incredibly versatile piece of kit to take incredible photos or video.  If I didn’t care so much about keeping things lightweight I’d buy the camera he uses.

You can buy this combo for $1198 at Amazon here or with the kit 18-55 for $998 (I’d suggest the 18-1356 for that much more versatility with that longer zoom.

image

There are a TON of lens options for this camera and as a second lens I’d buy the Sony 35mm 1.8 (Sony Alpha SAL35F18 A-mount Wide Angle Lens)  these small wide primes are soooo much fun to shoot with.  You don’t need it right away because the Sony A65 is so capable in low light to begin with, but once you shoot with a fast wide prime you’ll understand what I mean about fun.

Windmill Chatter

Paul Korn writes-

We are so proud of our city as it moves solidly into the 21st century.  Some may complain that it ruins the view.  Every morning, I see this glorious structure (the first of three) as I walk on Good Harbor Beach.  It  is a visible commitment to doing our part to create cleaner energy, not to mention making a statement that we care and will act on our values.  (And we will be saving money!)

The significance of yesterday’s shock announce-ment by our Energy Minister John Hayes that the Government plans to put a firm limit on the building of any more onshore windfarms is hard to exaggerate.

Rubber Duck visits Rockport Arts Association at Halftime

Rubber Duck figured Brady had the Bills in hand so we went down to the Rockport Arts Association New Member’s Show at the half. Free wine and cheese? No brainer. A lot of amazing stuff. Every time I walk through the RAA I am blown away by the art on the walls. You can smell the waves, the beach, the waves crashing, the sails snapping in the wind, or the cat sleeping on a wicker chair. (That cat was a water color that has to be seen in person to be appreciated.)

So Michael Foley is someone I have been following on Facebook because he takes Cape Ann granite and carves it like butter. Because he is joining the Cape Ann Artisans Tour he is already earmarked for the Rubber Duck visiting his studio in the spring to find out how he does it.Michael is to the right of the Rubber Duck who is appreciating the granite.  New Member Show until December 6th. The Rockport Art Association will be filled with gifts for that really hard to cover loved one all the way through Christmas.

As for Brady and the Pats they were just jerking us around making it a nail biter down to the last 20 seconds. Did Vince Willfork want to bite the head off of someone?

Deb Shares Her Red Squirrel Story

Deb von Rosenvinge from House of the Raven writes the following in response to GMG post American Red Squirrel Midden:

I too enjoy all your posts Kim. Also had a small family of reds move into my house via my crawl space. When I blocked the mother’s main entrance, she found another way in and actually poked her head out of the hole I had to make in my ceiling to get a trap up there, and chided me! I caught the whole family and even caught the mom with two babies at one time! They had foiled me several times of setting the trap– Got the bait, sprung the trap and yet escaped. I finally spread the peanut butter right on the trip mechanism and bingo! I’ll send you a picture of my multiple capture. Thought I should send it on to the Hav-a-Hart company!

All in my ceiling!  They sounded like a soccer team rolling around acorns and having a blast!

Thank you for sharing Deb. I read that American Red Squirrels experience severe early mortality; only about 22 percent survive to one year. So good that you were able to catch the mama and babies all together! Deb von Rosenvinge Photo

World Origami Days: Origami on Cape Ann

Hopefully, this series of posts has stirred up some interest in origami in at least a few people.  So, where can one find origami here on Cape Ann?

For books and paper, the only place I have found on this side of the bridge is Island Art and Hobby on Main Street in Gloucester.  They have a selection of basic kits as well as separate books and paper.  They told me that they will be expanding the selection slightly in the coming days, and I bet they could order more if you need something they don’t have in stock.

Of course, A.C. Moore and Michael’s at the Liberty Tree Mall also have paper, but it’s nice to buy locally and support our Main Street economy.

You can also buy completed origami art without crossing the Annisquam River.  Staying on Main Street, at the The Dress Code consignment shop you can find a selection of origami jewelry:

It is not on display, so if you are interested you have to ask at the counter. Some of it was made by  Mark Kennedy, whom I know from the annual origami conventions in New York.  He lacquers his work so that it has long-term durability despite the fragility of paper, and he glues pins or clips on the back to turn the origami models into jewelry.

There is also the Four Winds gallery on Tuna Wharf on Bearskin Neck in Rockport. It is a family gallery, including photography, pottery, origami, and more, mostly (or all) by members of the Carbone family.  The origami there includes stand-along models of varied topics (including fish, of course) and colorful mobiles.

Lastly, I hope to be selling some origami Christmas ornaments in this year’s Christmas Bazaar at St. Ann’s Church (a fundraiser for St. Ann’s Parish) later this month (I think it’s Nov. 17th; I’ll post full info later).

If you are interested in classes, I don’t think there is anything available on a regular basis, but as I have mentioned, I hope to give a Christmas origami class and maybe offer more workshops from time to time.

Did I miss anything? Do you know of any stores on Cape Ann that sell origami books or paper, or finished origami art? Please share by posting a comment!

Chickity Check It!- Gloucester fishing boat washes up on Cohasset shores after storm Pics From Boston Harbor Beacon

Boston Harbor Beacon Writes-

Gloucester fishing boat washes up on Cohasset shores after storm

Posted on November 10, 2012 by admin

This week’s Nor’easter, packing wind gusts up to 50mph, swept a Gloucester fishing boat all the way across Massachusetts Bay. This morning, while driving down Jerusalem Road in Cohasset, I was surprised to see the boat was still there, so I took these pictures from the street (the vessel appears to be on private property, so I couldn’t get much closer). The location of this vessel is near the intersection of Jerusalem Road and Atlantic Ave. Evidently, the boat broke from its mooring in Gloucester’s Magnolia Harbor, which is just over 22 miles away!
