Rudyard Kipling Quote of the Week From Greg Bover
“If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same….”
From If- 1895
Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)
Best known hereabouts for his 1897 novel Captains Courageous, Kipling was the quintessential apologist and proponent of British imperialism. He was born in Mumbai, then called Bombay, to English parents, and became famous for his poems and short stories set in India, (Gunga Din, The Jungle Book, etc). Henry James referred to him as a man of “complete genius.” He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907, the youngest recipient of that honor. He and his young family lived in Brattleboro, Vermont from 1892 to 1896, and it was during this period that he visited Gloucester to write about fishing from the dory schooners. Kipling’s unquestioning support of the Empire was cooled by the death of his son in the First World War. He continued to write, but with less success, until his own death in 1936.

Foggy Autumn Sunrise Featuring a Ring-necked Pheasant
Foggy Autumn Sunrise ~ November 9, 2011, 6 minutes.
Filmed at Good Harbor Beach on a luxuriously warm November morning. Standing in the sand dunes filming the wildflowers and rising sun I heard a noise behind me, and only several feet away. I turned to see a Ring-necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). This is my first encounter with a Ring-necked Pheasant at Good Harbor Beach, but have subsequently learned they are fairly common. I was amazed to see it foraging so close to the public beach and not closer to the marsh where cover is dense. Introduced to Massachusetts in 1894, this game bird continues to thrive in both rural and metropolitan areas. The footage of dried flower heads is of Seaside Goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens). The opening and final clips show the White’s house, formerly referred to by townspeople as the ‘”Birdcage” because it was wrapped on all four sides with open porches, which have now been enclosed.
Music composed by Antonio Vivaldi: The Four Sesaons Opus 8 Autumn Allegro. Performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra with Itzhak Perlman Violin.
From wiki: The Four Seasons (Le quattro stagioni) is a set of four violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi. Composed in 1723, The Four Seasons is Vivaldi’s best-known work, and is among the most popular pieces of Baroque music. The texture of each concerto is varied, each resembling its respective season. For example, “Winter” is peppered with silvery pizzicato notes from the high strings, calling to mind icy rain, whereas “Summer” evokes a thunderstorm in its final movement, which is why the movement is often dubbed “Storm.”
The concertos were first published in 1725 as part of a set of twelve concerti, Vivaldi’s Op. 8, entitled Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione (The Contest between Harmony and Invention). The first four concertos were designated Le quattro stagioni, each being named after a season. Each one is in three movements, with a slow movement between two faster ones. At the time of writing The Four Seasons, the modern solo form of the concerto had not yet been defined (typically a solo instrument and accompanying orchestra). Vivaldi’s original arrangement for solo violin with string quartet and basso continuo helped to define the form.

Don’t Be A Negligent Parent! Get Your Kids Down To Art Haven Today or Saturday To Paint A Buoy For The Lobster Trap Tree
![]()
The lobster trap tree is up once again and it needs to be decorated! Art Haven is once again offering a free day of buoy painting on December 10th from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Children and teens of all ages are welcome to visit the 180B Main Street studio space in Gloucester to create their own original painted buoy ornament for this year’s community tree. The tree will then be lit with all of its festive décor at 5:00pm on Saturday as a culmination of the Middle Street Walk events happening all day.
Also for the fourth year, everyone is welcome to participate in creating a giant ice sculpture in front of Art Haven from 10:00am – 12:00pm on Saturday the 10th. All of these activities are made possible by generous donations from Cape Pond Ice, Ben’s Paint, Winchester Fishing and Rose’s Marine.
“We are so thankful to have been able to start a new holiday tradition for the community,” says Art Haven Director Dawn Gadow. “It’s great to see the kids faces as the lights go on around their beautiful buoy creations on the tree! Things like that start teaching them at a young age what it means to be a part of the Cape Ann community.”
The day is becoming even more of a community effort this year, as Project Uplift will also have a presence at the tree lighting and buoy painting day. Santa will be collecting toys, clothes and gift cards for Action Inc.’s Project Uplift program throughout the day and tree lighting, so you can bring a toy to help out another family this holiday season. In addition, the winner of this year’s downtown shopping spree will also be drawn at this year’s tree lighting ceremony.
For more information visit www.arthaven.org, call Art Haven at (978) 283-3888 or email arthaveninfo@gmail.com.

The Pewter Shop
As I mentioned in another post, I went down to Bearskin Neck one evening last week in search of Christmas decorations to photograph. A variety of the shops have nice window displays, but one of the few places that is really lit up is the Pewter Shop. You can’t miss it!
Recently, we (Holy Family Parish) bought a set of pewter cups and bowls from this shop for use at Mass, and at the time I was impressed by both their beautiful variety of pewter wares and the friendliness of the proprietors. I decided to go back to photograph some of the beautiful things they sell. It would be a good place to go for some elegant Christmas or Chanukah gifts.

They aren’t kidding about this being “Irish Pewter”. I saw these same items being sold in gift shops in Ireland earlier this year. Surprisingly, the price at this shop in Rockport is as good or better than what I saw in Ireland…
Don’t forget to go through to the back side of the store (as I did the first time I was there)…

Peter Thomsen Back Shore Poem
Peter writes-
The Backshore is huge part of my life. I’ve grown up on the rocks and my personal ideology is formed from it. Here I tired to put words to my connection with it. Hope you like it!
Come Find Me There Sometime and We’ll Share Freedom
By Brunner T
I’ve seen beaches collect atop the rocks,
I’ve seen them be ripped away.
I’ve seen placid, clear water;
Green glass resting on the seaweed.
I’ve seen the essence of rage:
Walls of blue-gray fury
Dashing
Themselves to foamy fragments
On intransient boulders.
I’ve seen every tide, mood, and time
Of the Backshore.
My shins are bruised,
My skin has torn,
I’ve felt weathered rock
Bite my lip.
The line of horizon
Belittles me,
Life feels a lifetime too short.
The road above is busy
But I assure you the air is clean.
My dog files his nails here,
But I simply breath.
