KITTERY, Maine — It must have felt like stepping back in time Monday afternoon for anyone standing on the banks of the Piscataqua River, as two replicas of 15th-century ships came into view.
The Niña and Pinta, modeled after ships of the same name sailed by Christopher Columbus when he came to the New World in 1492, sailed into Badger’s Island Marina East on Monday for a weeklong stay.

Introducing: The Burnham’s Field Gardener Series From John McElhenny
Burnham’s Field is the largest green space in central Gloucester. A century ago, it was used as a dumping ground. Today it’s an area of green grass, play areas and ball fields where kids play and families socialize. Recently there’s been a resurgence of pride in Burnham’s Field, including a new 20-plot garden. The gardeners have gotten to know each other and built a small community in addition to a place to grow vegetables and flowers. In some ways, the Burnham’s Field Community Garden represents what’s best about Gloucester: a close-knit, hard-working community that cares for its neighbors.
Starting today, GoodMorningGloucester introduces a series of profiles of the Burnham’s Field Community Gardeners. Here are their stories.

Paula Shevenell describes her secret bug defense technique and how gardening revives fond memories of her dad and mom and the family gardens of her youth. “It really feels good to get my hands in the dirt,” she says.

Did You Know? (Sangria and Silpada Girl’s Night Out)
That on Wednesday, June 15th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, E.J. will be hosting a Silpada Designs Jewelry party at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck, featuring beautiful, cool, funky, elegant, fun and affordable sterling silver jewelry by Silpada Designs? Come over and check out this great jewelry line (I personally love a bunch of their jewelry), have some home made sangria and munchies and check out the gallery. I don’t intend to carry jewelry in the gallery, but am thinking about having occasional evening jewelry trunk parties. If you are a jeweler and think you might like to feature your jewelry for an evening, email me at khanstudio@comcast.net. Also, if you plan to come to the Girl’s Night Out Jewelry Party, please email me and let me know, so I can be sure to make enough sangria. Did you know sangria is good for you? It has lots of fruit and red wine packed with antioxidants, for guiltfree imbibing.

Barbara Oliver Asks- Are You Innovating Through Social Media?
Social platforms can all work together to attract more eyeballs and iminds to what you do.
Okay…so you are a Gloucester artist, non profit or small biz. You regularly post on Facebook, you may even have tried your hand at Twitter and you may have a LinkedIn profile. The challenge is to integrate the use of these tools…making them all work together in the most efficient way…because your time is valuable, right?
What is the difference in the way you present yourself, your art, your cause or your service on each one of these platforms…because there is a difference you know.
They’re all about engagement, but what works on Facebook, where you more or less know your “friends”, won’t necessary fly well on Twitter where you are engaging in the “global conversation” to maximize your reach. And believe it: if you are presenting yourself well on Twitter, they will find you.
Building a successful social media presence, requires an understanding of how these different environments work, and plugging away at it…Your art, your mission, your business is worth it…right?
And of particular value to artists is the Arts Map. If you’re not on the Arts Map, you should be, and if you are, how are you leveraging your Arts Map presence?
Whether you are a novice or a little further along, you can learn something of value at “Social media for Artists and Non-profits” (and small biz too!) to be held at Ten Pound Studio, 1 Center St., Gloucester on Saturday, June 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. Bring a laptop if you have one (wifi available). Register at http://artsgloucester.com/bthevision/
Or email bthevision@gmail.com
