Did You Know? (Fast Moving Train)

That the train heading to Rockport goes really fast as it passes through Dogtown?  My sister and I were on another Babson boulder hunting excursion on Saturday.  We were walking down the tracks heading for the reservoir from Blackburn when we heard the train whistle.  There is no where to go to get out of the way there, as you have water on both sides of the track, so we ran, and reached the path just in time to get some cool train passing shots.  The engineer blew a greeting whistle to us as he raced by.

Coming soon, the 2012 Dogtown and Babson Boulder calendar with all 26 boulders in it, as well as cellar holes, where James Merry died after being gored by his bull and other cool Dogtown images.  Watch for it here.

  1. The purple train amidst the fall foliage really is nice! Love these photos! My heart still goes pitty-pat when I take the boys on trips, which we do, since we are a one car family. Wishing the old streamliner trains were still in service. I would steam across the country (while getting my hair done and eating steak.) LOVE the train! 🙂

  2. Yes Beth, trains are great. I can just see you racing across the countryside eating steak while have your hair done.
Ruth, one thing about trips to Dogtown, there is always some adventure and great photos. If you haven’t been, you should check it out before the snow falls. Although its probably really mystical after a snowfall.

  3. Glad you got past the train safely. What a great idea to do a Dogtown Calendar! Most of us get confused trying to find all the boulders. It will be great to have them collected in one place.

  4. Hi Bruce, thanks – apparently people get hit along that stretch and I can understand why. I actually did a Dogtown calendar last year, but only had found 14 of the boulders at that time. It is challenging finding some of them, even with the GPS map and a GPS; but my sister and I weren’t leaving Dogtown until we found them all this time. It was sad to see that a number of them had been defaced, so I had to spend a fair amount of time cleaning them up in Photoshop so they would look the way Roger Babson intended.

  5. Jeese, E.J. ! We could have lost you. I’m glad you revved up your little engine in time to get out of the way before you lost YOUR caboose. Enjoyed the photos. Pink trains??? When I was just a tyke standing at the Gloucester Station, the old black steam engine would pull in from Rockport blasting it’s whistle. I’d hang tight to Mother’s hand as the hair on my arms stood at attention, in awe of that huge machine. Now THAT was a train!

  6. Hi Leslie – yes, and running on train tracks is not the easiest thing to do. I’d love to have sees the old black steam engine, and the old cabooses.
