That the Garter (also known as Garden) snake is the most common of all snakes and was designated as the official reptile of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2007. The garter snake got its name from the garters that men used to wear to hold up their socks, and the fact that it has a garterlike pattern running the length of its body. Garter snakes are harmless, and even if you corner one and he bites you, he can’t do you any harm. This one startled me when I almost stepped on him while on a walk this morning.

Very neat photo! We have lots of garter snakes out here, usually sunning themselves on hot pavement in the Spring soon after they are born. Don’t you think that official “state snakes” might not always be reptiles:-)

That’s true. Garter snakes are harmless that’s why they can be great pets. The key to finding Garter Snakes is the water source. If you are looking for Garter Snakes the best thing is to look around ponds, turn rocks etc. to see if there are any snakes beneath them. Source: http://www.gartersnake.org/

Thanks for the additional info Michael. I’ve always loved seeing (and catching when I was young) garter snakes. I never would have thought of them as pets, or of being curious.
