Judy Robinson Cox is hands down the most creative photographer in Gloucester based on the materials and the way she presents her photographs.   Between the books, the Lilliputian series, the distressed paint photos, the translucent photos that you hang in windows, there is no-one getting as creative as she is with the materials and how her unique art is presented.  Any gallery that hosts her work should be genuinely honored to have her because she continually pushes the boundaries of traditional photographic fine art.

Not only that, she tirelessly collaborates the N E W S   F R O M   R O C K Y   N E C K newsletter which an aggregation of Rocky Neck Art Colony Members news, for nothing, because she is one of those people who give and like to help others.

Did You Know? (National Lobster Day)

That yesterday was National Lobster Day?  Who knew, and if I had, I would have posted this yesterday after I took these shots.  Also, did you know that Joey C., creator and driving force behind Good Morning Gloucester, is a lobster broker (seller of lobsters)?  I’ve realized in my daily discussions with people about Good Morning Gloucester, that many people do not know this fact.  He doesn’t talk about it on the blog because he doesn’t want people to think he is using the blog for his own personal gain.  I however am a contributor to the blog, whose mission is to let people know about things they may not know.  If you are a lover of this prehistoric crustacean, boiled with plenty of drawn butter, baked or stuffed, with linguine, Newberg, Thermidor, bisque, on a roll or in a salad, Captain Joe & Sons, 95 East Main Street, Gloucester is the place to get your lobster (its where all the finest restaurants get their’s), and say hey to Joey.  To me, lobster is quintessential New England summer fare – a summer without lobster is like a summer without sunshine. 

Also, did you know that the American lobster did not achieve popularity until the mid-19th century, when New Yorkers and Bostonians developed a taste for it?  Prior to this time, lobster was considered a mark of poverty or as a food for indentured servants or lower members of society in Maine, Massachusetts and the Canadian Maritimes, and servants specified in employment agreements that they would not eat lobster more than twice per week. American lobster was initially deemed worthy only of being used as fertilizer or fish bait, and it was not until well into the twentieth century that it was viewed as more than a low-priced canned staple food.  How far you’ve come dear, delectable lobster!

Did You Know? (Zachariah Stevens)

That this right of way to the harbor was dedicated to the citizens of Rocky Neck by Zachariah Stevens in 1832?  Zachariah Stevens, (1763-1846), enlisted at fifteen and served as a private and a seaman. He was born at Andover and died at Gloucester, where he was a pensioner.

Joey already posted two weeks ago here about the 2011 Cape Ann Artisan Tour but it’s only two days away. This is one of Rubber Duck’s favorite events so get out and find her.

Rubber Duck Quick Tip: click and print this brochure. A simple map and description of the 14 stops. You get tours of pottery studios, find out how they fire those pots, see the world’s biggest color printer, all sorts of cool stuff. If you do not know the artists that are hiding in the woods on this island this is a great way to find a bunch of them.

NORTH SHORE ARTS ASSOCIATION NEW MEMBER EXHIBITIONS & Charles Movalli Painting on Raffle for Know Breast Cancer

North Shore Arts Association presents Solo Exhibitions by Featured Artists, Barbara Barclay, June 12 through June 26 and Ray Crane, June 12 through June 26 in the Gordon Grant Room; and Members Exhibition II is on display now through June 25. The Charles Movalli painting being raffled off to raise money for Know Breast Cancer is currently on display.

Classic maritime artist Ray Crane has been an artist for over 30 years and is a graduate of the Boston Museum School and a member of the American Society of Marine Artists.

Barbara Barclay studied at Montserrat College of Art, the Manchester Institute of Art and has studied with Laura Stover, R.S. Jackson and Cory Staid.

Charles Movalli generously donated a painting for the Know Breast Cancer raffle, a fundraising effort to help provide breast cancer awareness education to women of Essex County. The painting is on display at NSAA’s gallery through June 25th. Tickets are $25 and can be purchase by cash or check at the gallery.

North Shore Arts Association has a thriving artist membership of over 350 contemporary artists recognized nationally and worldwide. They come not only from Cape Ann, but throughout North America. NSAA’s historic old building, located at 11 Pirates Lane in Gloucester, provides the opportunity to view the largest collection of paintings and sculpture on Cape Ann.

North Shore Arts Association is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sundays from Noon to 5:00 pm. The gallery extends its evening hours on Fridays, June through August, until 8:00 pm. Meanwhile, on stage we welcome back Mr. Steve Sadler,  former Beach Boy and glitarist Xtrordinaire for yet another nite of fun and games. Steevie is one of the busiest and hottest stringlers I know.He can choke anything with a neck until it screams for mercy. Sings, too.

Rockport Chamber Music Festival update

Here’s a Rockport Chamber Music Festival update –

A limited number of turn back tickets are available for this weekend’s concerts at the Shalin Liu Performance Center. Although concerts this Thursday through Friday all sold out in advance, anyone needing their “RCMF fix” might be able to secure a ticket by calling the Rockport Music Box Office at 978-546-7391, Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Rockport Music also has a limited number of tickets available for its free Family Concert with the Jupiter String Quartet this Saturday at 10 AM at the Shalin Liu. Call the box office for more information.

Rockport Chamber Music Festival hosts a free lecture with Marc Nuccio, the Acting Principal Clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic on Friday, June 17 at 11:00 a.m. It’s open to the public and tickets are not required. If anyone thinks they might be the next Benny Goodman they definitely should attend. Mr. Nuccio is in town to perform Festival concerts on Saturday at 8 PM (Brahms Trio) and Sunday at 5 PM (Messiaen).

Terry Weber Covers The seARTS Bass Rocks Art Show

Hi Joey,

I attended the seARTs Art Show at the Bass Rocks Golf Club as your “Rookie Reporter” or “Guest Reporter” — not sure what to call myself. Anyway, the show was wonderful and included the works of over 25 local artists with their pieces displayed throughout the Bass Rock’s event room. There was also a great food spread, cash bar, panel discussion led by educator Joy Dai Buell, raffle and Viewer’s Choice Award. (more to come on who won award).

One of the great things about the show was the pride and passion of the artists, and it showed in their faces and words. Speaking of faces, a few of the photos had sun-glare which sometimes worked out in a strange way. Look at the photo of Martha Wakefield; I think its the third one in the set. If you look into her painting you can see a reflection of her face.

The Rocky Neck Art Colony Is Looking for Old Rocky Neck Photos

Looking for Old Rocky Neck Photos
The Rocky Neck Art Colony is looking for old photographs of Rocky Neck to include in a History of Rocky Neck exhibit in the Rocky Neck Gallery.  If you have any photos taken before 1990 that we could borrow, scan and return to you, please contact Judy Robinson-Cox (judy@robinson-cox.com). Specifically, we are looking for photos that show the character of Rocky Neck including the artists that worked here and their studios and galleries. The older the better. If we use the photo, we will display it with a short description and credit line for the photographer.

Judy may I suggest you head down to the Cape Ann Historical Museum and see our boy FOB Fred Buck in the archive room?  If anyone hasn’t figured it out by now, they have an incredible amount of old photos and a staff of caring people who would like nothing more than help you access it.
