Cheddar Cheese Soda Bread–a simple recipe with great results!

Hi All!  I made this recipe when I got an email from the King Arthur Flour Company with a similar recipe.  I changed it up a little but the original is so delicious that I didn’t do much, trust me!  I wanted to make the bread a little healthier so I changed out some of the all purpose flour for some King Arthur White Whole Wheat flour (which has more fiber) and used reduced fat cheese instead of full fat.  I also upped the salt a bit because I prefer a tiny bit more salt in my bread.  If you make it, please let me know what you think.

Cheddar Cheese Soda Bread

1 1/2 cups King Arthur White Whole Wheat Flour
1 cup all purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons cold salted butter, cut in to small pieces
8 oz reduced fat cheddar cheese (I used jalapeno cheddar for a kick), shredded
1 cup buttermilk
1 large egg, at room temperature

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together flours, baking powder, baking soda and salt.  Work in cold butter with fingertips until small crumbs form.  Add cheese and toss to combine.

In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and eggs until well combined.  Add to flour and cheese mixture and fold until just combined.

Turn dough out on to a well floured surface.  Knead several times and shape in to a smooth ball.  Transfer to prepared baking sheet.

Bake in preheated oven for 30-40 minutes until golden brown and a skewer inserted in to the middle of the loaf comes out clean.  Allow to cool slightly before serving.  Makes excellent sandwich bread or toast.

FIND ME!

If  you find  it you can have it,  or in the Fraggle Rock Christmas Tradition pass it on.

I did a few quick sketches on a couple of rocks at Pebble Beach in Rockport about 2:15pm Today.

I left them on the big barrier rocks there.

Find them before the Seagulls critique my Artwork.

GMG Kid’s Art Project

Have you ever thought to yourself, “Hey, how could I contribute something for the pages of GMG?”

Well there are many ways, you could always join the GMG Flickr Group Pool and add pictures there like many folks have done.  You could send in a self-stamped and addressed envelope for a GMG sticker and take pictures on your travels for use here on our pages with Da Sticka.

You could send in uplifting stories from around town for us to share.

But now we have another way to get your kids involved (or if you are a big kid feel free to participate).

The GMG Kid’s Art Project!  The premise is pretty simple.  You know those rainy days that we are bound to have all through the spring?  The ones where your kids are climbing the walls?  Have your kids draw a picture and somehow incorporate the Letters GMG or Good Morning Gloucester.  Take a picture of it and send it in.  I’ll post them as they come in and make a slide show with the names of the young artists on each picture.

It could be a picture of anything as long as it has GMG or Good Morning Gloucester clearly visible on it.  Pictures of Lobsters, Seagulls, the Man at The Wheel, A Beach Scene, A Fish- Anything.

How fun would that be?

If there are any art teachers who are looking for art projects for their class I’d love to have entire classes of school kids have their stuff represented and we could post them and give the teachers some props as well!  David and Dawn at Art Haven- I’m talking to you too!  I know you have the cameras and I know you have the kids there.  Bobby Viau-you listening?

The one below was from niece Amanda Mohan to give you an idea of what I’m talking about.

Chickity Check It! The All New Good Morning Gloucester Community Calendar

GMG Logo Designed By Beth Swan

I had a conversation with Patrick Doud yesterday, the writer who will be having his book signing Sunday at The Bookstore of Gloucester, about being an artist and creating.  Specifically we talked about a subject I’ve discussed with many different artists in different mediums such as painting, writing, sculpting, blogging, basically any passion in which you are creating.

The premise that I find to be common among people who have that creative fire within is that if they hit a wall or lose momentum or stop pushing the boundaries of their medium that they  get really depressed or in a big time funk.

And so it is with the blog.  When I feel like I’m bumping up against the same material or formats or functions of the blog I feel an itch and it bothers me if we are not pushing forward with new ideas or if there are ways we can do things better.  It may mean ways to reach more people.  It may mean a better way to serve up video or pictures.  It may mean higher quality production.  It may mean new tools for people to use on the blog.

Some of the spawn of these itches have been the GMG Local WiFi Map, many of the various contests we hold, new HD video, and other things like that. Well now you can add another dimension to the GMG Blog-  another tool to communicate with our community, another way for folks to find out what is going on around town.

It’s The Good Morning Gloucester Community Calendar. As people send me new events coming up around Cape Ann I’ll add the listings to the GMG Community Calendar so anyone can peruse what is happening.  If you have an event coming up just send it along in a comment and I’ll be sure to add it to the GMG Community Calendar for our entire community to learn about.

I included a tab along the top of the page titled Upcoming Events.  Click on that tab for the Link to the GMG Community Calendar and please don’t hesitate to send in suggestions.

Tonight- Timebank Event At Alchemy

From Kristin Elaine Myers

Here below are the details of a really fun and worthwhile event tomorrow night to take place at Alchemy owned by another dear friend Mark McDonough who as you may know does a lot of wonderful things for our community. Mark helped to found the Cape Ann Timebank a few years ago and tomorrow night he will provide the place and the food for the fund-raiser for that organization in which I am a member.  This is a worthy cause but even if you don’t know or care about Timebanks, it is a good deal:  $7-$10 (sliding scale) includes the food and music by the renowned and beloved band Groove. Come out and have a great time with your neighbors and friends while also helping to support a good cause.  See you there!!!!

Cape Ann TimeBank will hold a benefit party and raffle at Alchemy Bistro on Duncan Street in Gloucester on March 20, 2010, featuring the popular local band, Groove.  The theme of the event is “Let’s get together and feel alright.”  Admission will be on a sliding scale of $7 – 10 and will include a free raffle ticket as well as a free selection of Alchemy Bistro’s foods. Groove performs an upbeat eclectic mix of classic rock and new alternative sounds of ska & reggae with an emphasis on making crowds dance.  The fun starts at 9:30 pm and continues until 12:30 am.  For more information about the TimeBank:  www.capeanntimebanks.org Info about the dance: Nancy Goodman 978 546-9551 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 978 546-9551 end_of_the_skype_highlighting ngoodman52@yahoo.com or  Cheryl Davis 413 454-4682 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 413 454-4682 end_of_the_skype_highlighting c_davis62@hotmail.com.
