Origami for kids at Art Haven and Theatre Camp for Kids at the YMCA
This Thursday (3:30-5PM) is the last origami class for kids this month at Art Haven! The content and level of difficulty of the class is entirely flexible according to the needs and interests of those who sign up.
So, for example, if your child (or a child you know) has an origami book and has stopped using it because he/she is stuck on a difficult model or discouraged, register them for the class and bring them with the book in question! I will help them through whatever difficulty they may be facing, and we can fold some model(s) from the book with the other students.
The possibilities are endless! Contact Art Haven for details on pricing and registration, and if you do register and have a specific interest or need, let me know ahead of time so I can prepare if necessary (you can comment on this post). We folded a boat, a dragon, a lotus flower, and a Brontosaurus (aka Apatosaurus). Leon’s father David Calvo is a wood carver who does beautiful work and teaches classes as well.
It’s not too late to sign kids up for Theatre Camp at the YMCA! I’ve heard great things about this program. “Murder on Rocky Neck: The Opera” was the result of a similar program with Henry Allen in the past.

YMCA TEEN LEADERS CLUB 2011 ROCKATHON TO FEED CAPE ANN ’S HUNGRY
Back in January, thirty-three members of the YMCA Teen Leaders Club embarked on their annual "Rockathon to Feed Cape Ann’s Hungry" – with each member rocking in a rocking chair for 24-sleepless hours from 8am Saturday through 8am Sunday. Each Y Teen Leader committed to solicit and collect a minimum of 230 cans. Youth spent weeks soliciting and then collecting donations of non-perishable food items. In order to accommodate prospective donors who might have difficulty carting caseloads of cans, the club established a "two-for-a-dollar" rate for financial donations for Open Door.
Through the efforts of this fantastic group of local youth, 7749 cans and other non-perishable food items were earned and distributed to the Open Door, St. Vincent DePaul Society and directly to local families in need.
On March 10th, the YMCA Teen Leaders Club welcomed special guest Julie LaFontaine, Executive Director of the Open Door to attend their weekly meeting. After Julie thanked the teens for their consistently strong efforts year after year, club members proudly presented a $2075 donation – the fiscal culmination of the groups’ collections. The YMCA Teen Leaders Club would like to officially recognize our top three solicitors: Alex Jones-770, Steven Verga-554 and Shannon Gallagher-536. We would also like to extend thanks to our families, friends, neighbors and the community for such a tremendous outpouring of support for others in need. Also, special thanks for donations to Dominos Pizza and Carroll K. Steele Insurance for our meals.

The YMCA is hosting an overnight Ski/Snowboard Trips for grades 6 and up; younger children may participate if accompanied by a parent. Trip fee is $155, add $30 for Rental Equipment. We hit the slopes on Friday night from 9pm -3am. We’ll camp overnight in the lodge and enjoy a complimentary breakfast buffet to fuel up for a full day Saturday (9am – 5pm) back out on the slopes. 74th YMCA Around the Cape 25K Road Race
Waiting for the first runners to take the turn at Halibut Point this morning.
I noticed a rock on the side of the road.
It looked exactly like a gastrolith. You can find these pretty easily in Southern Utah. Dinosaurs are birds and they ate rocks which then crunched up the food in their gizzard. Once they were all shiny they would go down to the stream to gobble some more rocks up but puke the shiny ones up first. Sure looked like a gastrolith.
Then the runners arrived.
The run is to benefit the Cape Ann YMCA. Next year it will be the 75th running. Lots of famous people have run this race, Billy Rogers for one. I always liked Rogers since he said he enjoyed potato chips with mayonnaise. So do I.
I kept the rock.

End of Summer Splash!!
Hey everyone!
Well just a recap of what’s going on for the August 29th 2010 upcoming event called “The End of Summer Splash”. We are scheduled to open the Gates around 12-12:30 PM to offer the live music and events from 1-6PM. The Weather is looking to be around 88 degrees and sunny so bring your bathing suit and a towel for the pool! There will be two lifeguards on duty. The picnic tables will fill up fast, so please feel free to bring a chair or a blanket to throw out on the ground to enjoy the festivities. People have been asking about can they bring food or snacks even though the barbecue is provided, and we say “Sure!” The Barbecue is just the basics, burgers, dogs, and soda.
We also have heard back from a few of the vendors and local merchants, and it looks like there will be at least 10 or more showing up for those who might have missed the sidewalk bizarre and wanted to break up their afternoon browsing and buying the wares they have to offer. We definitely have a few clothing, jewelry, and bag vendors coming, as well as a massage therapist (5 dollar massages & a chance to win a 90 minute massage!), as well as a character artist, and the Slush people! We are hoping that Dan the Sand Art vendor will confirm as well. I had hoped to have the class of 2013 Gloucester high school girls come and face paint, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet. Anyone Like to face paint?..lol
We have also been informed today that Camp Spindrift will allow those people with their pooches in the festival, but they have to be leashed at all times, and they must be picked up after. We hope to see as many of you there this weekend!
Remember this event is designed to be an event to have a great sober time, but it is also in support of Camp Spindrift, as well as our own cause to help meet our goal of raising funds to start the much needed Non-Profit status we seek. Below is what we sent out to the different supporters and local media outlets in order to spread the word for those who are not on Sober Connections or in Cape Ann.
Ok enough said. Our venue for August 29, 2010 incorporate the following
• Local live bands and music from 1-6pm
• A barbecue included in the ticket pricing
• Children’s activities and games
• The use of Camp Spindrift’s pool with lifeguards
• And we will also have vendor and organization information stations, set up around the event grounds, to help the parents and kids break up the afternoon and do some worthwhile shopping or organizational awareness!

Celebrate Gloucester Sponsored by National Grid is the first ever concert and
celebration on the I4-C2 property at 65 Rogers Street, recently purchased by the
City of Gloucester.
Grammy-award winning national recording artists will join local legends in a
celebration of music, local food and the working waterfront to kick off Gloucester’s
downtown revitalization.
Net proceeds will be donated to The Gloucester Fund earmarked for downtown
revitalization. The Gloucester Fund will award grants based on input from the
public. Beginning next week, anyone can nominate an existing project or charity

The snow might be melted, but those fields are just not ready yet! So we bring the best game inside! Join us Saturday morning as we continue on with our Youth Sport Leagues. Each indoor soccer league is age specific and will help to teach the game of Soccer. Participants will be instructed on the fundamentals of soccer including dribbling, passing and shooting. Players will be placed on teams with volunteer coaches. Team Tee Shirts will be distributed on the first day of play. League begins March 6th. Registrations are due February 27th.
