International Dory Race Boat Launch This Sunday

image

Erik Dombrowski writes-

We will be meeting this Sunday, May 20th at 9:30 AM at Eastern Ave. Self Storage to launch the freshly fixed and painted Race Dories in preparation for the upcoming eliminations.  Anyone who has a trailer available is asked to bring it along.  4 race dories will be launched and 2 practice dories will be pulled that morning, but with a little help it should only take an hour or two.  Please respond if you can help and if you have a trailer available.

And, a big thank you to all who supported our 60th Anniversary fund raiser last weekend.  Many bought tickets making the night a success.  And some even came and enjoyed the festivities.

Lastly, a reminder that this Saturday is the Essex River Race.  Anyone looking to use a dory should email the board for approval before taking one from the town landing.  And, eliminations are June 9th so get a partner and get rowing!

See you Sunday,

Erik

As Promised, you Saw/Heard it on GMG First

Perhaps you saw our post about the Concert Series we’re presenting at North Shore Music Theatre (click here if you missed it) in which we said GMG viewers will be the first to learn who will open for Chris Isaak on June 28.  That was almost true.  Actually, people who signed up for our newsletter were notified yesterday (you can sign up here, so you’re the first to know about new concerts).  But this is the first public announcement, so here goes . . .

Chelsea Berry has agreed to open for Chris Isaak.   Chelsea is one of Cape Ann’s top rising stars and she’ll have her full band.  If you haven’t heard Chelsea, this would be your best introduction to a major talent.  And if you’re already familiar, here’s a rare chance to see Chelsea with a full band in an intimate concert venue with excellent sound.  All seats are within 50 feet of the stage and there’s plenty of parking.  But there aren’t plenty of tickets (less than 1500) and they’re going fast (click here to get yours).  If you want to get yourself into the Chelsea mood, you can see her Mother’s Day show this Saturday at The Landing.  Call 978-526-7494 for tickets.

Wow, what a week we’re having (musically that is).  15 different artists appearing between now and Friday (see full music lineup here).  And another dozen over the weekend!   Time to party!

“Moose House” History May 10th

Preservation architect Frederic Detwiller of New England Landmarks will give a talk with a slideshow on the history of the Pearce-Haskell-Calef “Moose Lodge” house, 26 Pleasant Street, Gloucester, at the Sawyer Free Library on Thursday, May 10, at 7:00 pm.

The presentation will discus the design and construction of this exceptional 18th century federal-style, timber-frame house, most probably by master housewright Jacob Smith, for the City’s wealthiest merchant, David Pearce and the buildings subsequent evolution.

The talk will highlight the lives of the house’s residents, including China Trade Captain John Haskell, and their importance in Gloucester’s history.

The No Brainer of All No-Brainer Groupons The Thomas E. Lannon

Now Just last week I was telling you that the number one thing I would tell anyone that they had to do on a 70 degree plus day in G Town was to go for a sail on the Lannon, and lo and behold BAM!  A groupon for half off.  These don’t last long and usually they shut it down half way through the day because they only release so many to groupon.  Don’t be a dope, get yours for 45% off now!

The Schooner Thomas E Lannon Hauled Out At Rose’s 4:45 AM 4/19/12

Posted on April 22, 2012 by Joey C

It’s almost that time of year when all the really cool stuff around happens.  At the Top of my list for anyone coming into town on a nice day is a sail aboard the Thomas E Lannon.  Bottom line if a tourist had one thing to do and only one thing I’d tell them on a nice day to take a cruise aboard what I consider to be the most beautiful ship in the harbor.

Not only is the ship beautiful, but you also get to experience the warm genuine hospitality of some of the finest representatives our city has to offer The Ellis family. Captain Tom, his wife and sons are just the nicest most sincere, fun loving people you’d ever want to meet.

There is hospitality that is, you know, kinda forced, which in my book is fine because in the absence of the warm fuzzy true genuine friendliness I’ll take a forced friendliness over bad or rude service any day.  But from the minute you enter the booking office and you meet Kay you realize there is nothing phony about the Schooner Lannon’s operation.  They just happen to be really good at what they do, they love it and they provide a great experience genuinely and naturally- the best of all worlds!

This is not to say there aren’t a bunch of other very cool things to do around town like whale watches, deep sea fishing, Visiting The cape Ann Museum or The Heritage Center, coffee at one of our great coffee shops, breakfast at our many awesome breakfast joints, ect, ect.  I’m just saying, you give me a sunny 70 degree day and I have folks in from out of town, A guaranteed great time is to be had aboard The Thomas E Lannon.

Here are some early morning photos I took of her on the blocks at rose’s Marine where she is being sanded down and getting freshened up for the fun season ahead!

We will be having our GMG Folly Cove Rum and Old Cuban Cigar Co cruise this summer, as soon as Kay and I lock down the dates I’ll let y’all know.

The City’s Compost Facility located at Dogtown Common was slated to open for six consecutive weeks, beginning Saturday April 21st.  This has been postponed.

Due to the Emergency Declaration of Public Woods Closures, the facility, which is located within the public woodlands, remains closed.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but due to the dryness and danger of fires within the woodlands the facility must remain closed.  As soon as the woods re-open we will begin the six Saturday schedule.

If you need to dispose of yard waste immediately, you may bring it to Hiltz Disposal, 24 Kondelin Road.  There is a small fee $10 a carload $20-25 a pick up truck load.

Don’t Forget The Lane’s Cove Fish Shack Restoration Auction At The Maritime Heritage Center on Saturday from 1-4PM

How was your egg salad (with bacon) sub this morning from Virgilio’s Bakery? Good to see you.
Maybe you could put this info in your Blog on Friday to remind folks of the fundraising event on Saturday.
Attached is Fred Bodin’s info regarding the framed photo of Lanes Cove Fish Shacks circa 1925 that he talked me into donating to the auction to be held at the Maritime Center Saturday, April 21, from 1 to 4 pm.
After you come to Virgilio’s Bakery for lunch on Saturday (say hello), you should make your way to the auction at the Maritime Center to support the restoration efforts in Lanes Cove (way up there in the north, far from life on the docks).

Cape Ann Youth Hockey, Girls Hockey: Girls skate for FREE on Saturday, 21 / Sign-ups for 2012-13 season

Cape Ann Youth Hockey is hosting a Free On-Ice skating session with Open Enrollment / registration for the Girls Hockey 2012-13 season this Saturday, April 21 from 4:00-5:00 at the Dorothy Talbot rink at O’Maley Middle School in Gloucester. Based on the groundswell of interest over the past few years for such a program — and as confirmed by the attendance to the first two open ice sessions earlier this spring — Cape Ann Youth Hockey representatives will be available to sign up interested players and answer questions about this program.

Girls interested in playing for U14, U12, and U10 teams for the upcoming 2012-2013 season in the Middlesex Yankee Conference Girl’s Hockey League are invited to sign up this weekend. CAYH will also be registering girls at the U8 level and younger for participation in programs that range from In-House to Cross-Ice teams. The registration fee is $50.

All girl hockey players in this age range are welcome to the FREE skating session, even if not yet committed to signing up on Saturday.

A steady increase of girl registrants to the Cape Ann Youth Hockey program over the past few years has accentuated a trend that is being recognized across the country: the popularity of Girls hockey is growing by leaps and bounds. In this time there have been countless inquiries about the viability of an all girl teams here in Cape Ann. This and the tremendous success of the first two sessions have illustrated the desire for such a program here on the North Shore.

This is the third of four free spring hockey clinic sessions this spring. During these sessions we have been joined by 42 girls from ages 5 to 14 and ranging from beginners skill level to one who played for the O’Maley Middle School Hockey team this past season. These athletes came from Gloucester, Rockport, Essex, Manchester, Hamilton, Beverly, Danvers, Marblehead, and Reading to have fun, compete, and improve on their respective games. The sessions are being run by a core group of volunteer coaches who are certified (patched) through USA Hockey.

The first session included on-ice coaching from national treasure Ben Smith, of US Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey medal-winning coaching fame and his wife Julie Sasner, whose accolades include a stellar career as a Harvard Women’s Ice Hockey player and coaching at the college and national levels. The program will also benefit from the goalie coaching expertise of Joe Bertagna, former Boston Bruins and Olympic goalie coach.

The next free ice session will be sometime over the next few weeks and will be announced soon.

If you are interested in skating on Saturday, just show up by 3:30 — there is no cost to skate. There will be some drills for skating and stick handling as well as competitive scrimmaging. However, in order to claim a roster spot for the 2012-2013 season simply fill out a registration form and submit $50 to CAYH anytime between 3:00 and 6:00. We will also be hosting additional on-ice practices, scrimmages, and evaluations before the 2012-13 season. During the 2012-13 season, practices will be at the Talbot Rink in Gloucester.

Additionally, hockey-minded individuals (including coaches, parents, female hockey players), who would like to participate as volunteers, whether on- or off-ice, please be sure to leave your name and contact with the CAYH representatives at the registration booth on Saturday.

April- Pet of The Week

April

Hi, my name is April and I am a two-month-old girl pup who is a Retriever mix.  I have a pretty tan coat.  I am looking out to Cape Ann to see if there might be someone out there who would like to adopt me.   I have a lot of energy and  lots to learn; but I am smart and eager to learn.  I am at the Cape Ann Animal Aid, currently located at 260 Main Street in Gloucester.

Please visit our site at CapeAnnAnimalAid and see all the upcoming events to take place this summer.

Have you purchased your brick for the walkway at the new shelter at Four Paws Lane in Gloucester?   The new shelter will be opening later this year.   I have to run, there is a stuffed toy on the floor that looks like it needs to be crewed on!

The Action Emergency Homeless Shelter is now accepting donations of the following items: Deodorant, razors, feminine products, men’s sneakers and boots (larger sizes preferred), men’s jeans (larger sizes preferred), and socks. Thank you for your support!

ILLUSTRATED TALK

Flying Enterprises: Cape Ann Arts, Crafts and Literary Festivals of the early 1950s

Saturday, April 21 at 3:00 p.m.

Gloucester resident and local historian Mary Rhinelander McCarl will present this illustrated talk about the origins of the Cape Ann Festival of Arts (1952-1969). This program is included with admission; reservations are required. To make a reservation or for more information, please call (978)283-0455, x11 or email jeanettesmith@capeannmuseum.org.

In the early 1950s Cape Ann was full of graphic and sculptural artists, artisans in many media, writers of fiction, poets and playwrights. In 1952, thanks largely to the great sculptor Walker Hancock, the series of the Cape Ann Festival of Arts was begun. These Festivals lasted until 1969 and are well worth a whole series of talks, but in this talk Mary will concentrate on the first two years: 1952 and 1953.

Mary Rhinelander McCarl retired to Gloucester in 2001, having spent summers in the area since her birth in 1940. Her education includes degrees from Harvard College (a BA and an MA in History), Simmons College (an MLS) and UMass, Boston (an MA in History and Archives). She has served as the Assistant Curator of Manuscripts at the Genealogical Society and has been a volunteer at the Cape Ann Museum since 1988. Mary has a passionate interest in local history and is a dedicated researcher.

The Seafarer is about redeeming grace. How far would you go to save your soul? Sharky (the protagonist) has hit rock bottom and the play is about his struggle to overcome all odds including the devil himself-to do right by his friends and family.

McPherson (also wrote The Weir and St. Nicholas) is heralded by many critics as the best playwright of his generation. The play stunned audiences and critics in both London and New York and won the Olivier Prize for best new play in 2007 and received numerous Tony nominations.

The playwright uses levity as a bridge to a more profound meaning. The play holds audiences in stitches and stunned silence throughout. This production is co-directed by Jay DiPrima and Michael McNamara. The players are; Jay DiPrima, Rory O’Connor, Michael McNamara, Bob Karish and David Adams.

Be prepared for a disaster: Join the Gloucester Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) sponsored by FEMA

In a major disaster, emergency services cannot be everywhere at once, but properly trained citizens can be prepared to help themselves and assist their neighbors while waiting for the arrival of professional public safety personnel.

FEMA’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. With this training, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

People who go through CERT training have a better understanding of the potential threats to their home, workplace and community and can take the right steps to lessen the effects of these hazards on themselves, their homes or workplace. If a disaster happens that temporarily overwhelms local response capability, CERT members can apply the training learned in the classroom and during exercises to give critical support to their family, loved ones, neighbors or associates until help arrives. When professional help does arrive, CERTs provide useful information to these professionals and support their efforts, as directed, at the disaster site. CERT members can also assist with non-emergency projects that improve the safety of the community and have been used to distribute disaster education material and provide services at special events such as road races, parades, sporting events, and more.

The Gloucester CERT team has already been deployed several times to assist in Gloucester’s Emergency Operations Center and in their neighborhoods during times of severe weather incidents.  Our volunteers have been trained in emergency shelter operations, emergency communications and caring for animals during emergencies.

There are many jobs within CERT for someone who wants to be involved and help. During and following a disaster, CERT members are needed to assist at the EOC with documentation, help care for shelter residents, etc. Other CERT activities are more field related such as pumping cellars, filling sandbags, clearing snow and the like. Non-disaster related team activities may include keeping databases, developing a website, writing a newsletter, planning activities, helping with special events and organizing exercises and activities.

CERT training is open to anyone 18 years or older. Training classes will begin on Wednesday, May 9th 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Fuller School Library, and continue once a week for 6 weeks.

Class space is limited to 25 students. Applications are available on our web site at www.gloucester-ma.gov/cert  or email us at cert@gloucester-ma.gov.

To Help Travis Todd:image

Hello my name is Travis and I am an eleven year old boy with a chromosome abnormality that is rare,so rare that I am the only known case in the world. I love to go outside for walks in my wheelchair but I get upset when my mom stops to talk to someone, she needs to keep moving.I can walk but not far and not alone because I am legally blind. I can not talk at all and I have a g-tube so that I can eat. I am a very happy boy and my mom says that I have the cutest smile and the sweetest little laugh. I love my mom and dad and they love me. I have two older siblings and a niece and a nephew. My family is my life and I am theirs.

My Physical Therapist recommends that I get a Rifton Tricycle. This tricycle provides the support I need with specific accessories to allow me to ride around with my siblings.

IDRC Boat Launch Saturday

Thank you volunteers!

Thanks to an overwhelming turn out last Saturday, we have sanded and prepped both the race dories and practice dories. Now we are ready to launch the 2 practice dories to help alleviate early morning waiting at the dock. We are looking for some volunteers this Saturday, April 7th to help with the launch. We will meet at Eastern Ave Self Storage at 8:30 AM to help load up (if you have a trailer hitch or an empty trailer we really need your help!). Then we will launch at the High School landing shortly after. We need a few volunteers to bring their oars, seats, etc. to row the boats over to the docks as well. All should be done by 10AM with many hands doing light work.

Please let me know if you can tow or row.

Thanks,
Erik Dombrowski

Discover Gloucester Weekly From Linn Parisi

From Linn Parisi

Hey, Joey’s FOBs – I could use your help, as we’re just a few days away from sending the 2012 Discover Gloucester Visitor Guide to print: What are your best suggestions to include on the Visitor Guide’s "Rainy Day Fun" or "Free Things To Do" pages? Give me your best insider info!

I’m thrilled to tell you that 30 new partners have come on board in the Visitor Guide this year. This means that as a destination we’ll showcase a better representation of what is offered to a visitor and we’ll be able to do even more outreach to get more visitors to come here.  Did you know there are over 60 places to eat in our area that are either on the water or you can see the water from your seat?!  Eleven more restaurants are in the 2012 Visitor Guide, which is fantastic. Among the new entries is the newest in the City at 151 Main Street – Ohana New American Cuisine. Welcome aboard, Enx! Joey: Get over to Ohana soon- Enx’ buildout is on the fast track for opening in May!

Starting next week and as the season ramps up, you’ll be hearing from many of the fabulous tourism related venues on and off the island. How lucky are we to be surrounded by all this, huh?!
