Linda Greenlaw event this Thursday, 7/15 @ American Legion!

Hi Joey,
I’m sending this to you on behalf of Janice Severance, can you post something about the Linda
Greenlaw event sponsored by The Bookstore this Thursday, 7/15 at 7pm?  Due to the anticipated
interest, it is being held at the American Legion, 8 Washington Street.  There will be a table set
up with books available for purchase at the event, but folks can always stop by The Bookstore
anytime to pick up a book as well.  Linda’s funny and engaging stories are sure to please the crowd,
as always.  This should be a huge event for the city that put her on the map with The Hungry Ocean.

Seaworthy
The bestselling author’s sequel to The Hungry Ocean–a fast- paced account of her return to
swordfishing
Linda Greenlaw hadn’t been bluewater fishing for ten years- not since the events chronicled in the
books The Perfect Storm and The Hungry Ocean-but when her lobster traps aren’t paying off, her
truck is on its last gasp, and the bills are piling up, she decides to take a friend up on his
offer and captain a boat for a season of swordfishing. A decade older, and with family
responsibilities, she’s a different person heading out to sea, but any reluctance is quickly
tempered by the magnetic lure of adventure. And the adventures begin almost immediately: The ship
turns out to be rusty and ancient, and even with a crew of four Greenlaw is faced with technical
challenges. There are the expected complexities of longline fishing and the nuances of reading the
weather. Her greatest challenge, however, comes when the boat’s lines inadvertently drift into
Canadian waters and Greenlaw is thrown in jail.
Capturing the moment-by-moment details of her journey, Greenlaw tells a story about human nature
and the nature around us, about learning what can be controlled and when to let fate step in.
Seaworthy is a compelling narrative about a person setting her own terms and finding her true self
between land and water.

Ruth Wall writes-

Hi Joey,

Remember how I stumbled into Passports thinking I could do anything, including eat that hamburger, because I had just survived the hardest yoga class of my life?  I have an opportunity tip-off for a few strong people who don’t melt in the heat.  Help Kenny Lane at Seaview farm with haying.  This is the sort of thing football teams will sometimes "go out for" because it is such good conditioning.  It’s fresh air and by its definition, sunshine…"make hay while the sun shines".  There is drama and adventure too, as your crew races to get all the bales picked up before an oncoming thunder storm.  And that good, exhausted feeling afterward, Inner Peace.

Kenny mows fields for people all around Cape Ann.  The work is part time and for an afternoon here and there, and Ken does pay his help. He is looking for some good people now to help on and off for the rest of the summer.  Maybe if you post about it someone ill be glad for this rare chance to farm right close to home.

Go See- Sing! A GREAT SHOW FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY

Sing!
A new musical for the entire family  at Blackburn Performing Arts  1 Washington St.  Gloucester.
Friday July 16th and Saturday July 17th 7:30 PM
Tickets $10 adults $8.00 students & seniors
How could a musical take place inside a car? Well, it could if the passenger was on her way to a talent show audition – especially if the driver, her mother, was attempting to give her advice. Sparks start flying, mostly between the annoying younger sister and the “star” to the accompaniment of songs in a wide variety of styles – blues, rock, opera and country all fuse into one sizzling audition that… well, you be the judge.
Sing! is a new show written by Tim O’Brien and directed by local Emerson College studentCaitlin Hugel.  Local teens, Alexandra McColl and Marissa Lundy have choreographed the show and are featured dancers in the show.  The cast is made up of very talented Cape Ann youth ranging in age from 4 to 17: Rachel Sternlicht, Alexandra LeGendre, Charlotte Salmon, Alexandra McColl, Marissa Lundy, Jessica Lupo, Hannah Sears, Jack Favazza, Sarah Urbanski, Rebecca Brackett, Christina Giambanco, Henry Hardy, Owen Hardy, Bailee Militello, Sadie Baekstrom, Sabrina Siragusa, Stefanie Millefoglie, and Torrie McCabe Smeltzer

Three Billy Goats Gruff,You and Me Puppets

  • John N. Morris, author of Alone at Sea: Gloucester in the Age of the Dorymen (1623-1939), will speak about his 10 years of research into Gloucester’s fishing history, a project sparked by a personal quest to learn more about his grandfather, a doryman who was lost at sea.
  • Marlon Carey is a member of the 2010 Boston Lizard lounge Poetry Slam team. Named Best Hip Hop Poet by the Cambridge Poetry Awards two years in a row, he has been the Boston Cantab Lounge’s "Grand Slam Champion" and performed with the Jeff Robinson Trio. With a blend of eclectic themes, wordplay and wit, Marlon (AKA Inphynit) concocts a magical brew of fun with words.
  • Telescope is two bright brothers out of Boston who sing striking songs in a modern folk style with a hint of rock.
  • Judith O’Hare, You and Me Puppets, will perform Three Three Billy Goats Gruff and Hansel and Gretel. These stories are performed in a small table top theater called a toy theater, with pop-up scenery and small European-style rod marionette puppets. Judith  is the Education Consultant for the Puppeteers of America and is an award winner for her work in Puppetry in Education.

Three Sheets to the Wind, a group of local musicians and Schooner Adventure crew members, are preserving the history of maritime work songs (chanteys) and forebitter songs.
