Cape Ann Winter Birding Weekend February 4-6th

Dear Joey,

Just a heads up to GMG readers about the Winter Birding Weekend organized by the Cape Ann Chamber and Mass Audubon February 4-6. It starts Friday afternoon with check in at the Elk’s Hall on the Back Shore and then an evening lecture by Chris Leahy on the winter birds of Cape Ann. Saturday morning and afternoon there are guided bus trips all over the Cape led by expert ornithologists, with stops back at the Elk’s for hot drinks and food and another slide presentation in the evening. There are also vendor booths set up with optics, bird carving, photography and many other related topics.

On Sunday morning we go out on the Privateer IV with Jay Frontiero at the wheel, an incredible opportunity to see pelagic birds otherwise invisible, Gannets, Grebes, maybe even a King Eider. We’ll be back in plenty of time for the Super Bowl, if anyone still cares.

As EJ would say, did you know there are more birds on Cape Ann in the winter than there are in the summer? There are, they are just harder to see. I have been a casual birder for many years, but I learned more about the birds around here in one weekend than I had in all the previous time. The opportunity to go out birding with the experts is not to be missed, whether one is a long time observer or just interested in another amazing aspect of our life in Gloucester. People on the tours are friendly and helpful. Dress warmly and bring binoculars if you have them, folks will help out if you don’t.

This Is It!!!!! Friday Night- The Art Haven Lobster Buoy Auction and Art Show

DSC02303

You know all that positive energy that began way back when the lobstermen donated the use of their traps, the merry elves from Art Haven and the usual suspects spent days coordinating and building the lobster trap tree, the kids (and some adults) painted very special buoys to adorn the shining beacon of community spirit that is The 2010 Lobster Trap Tree?

Well here comes the payoff!  Here comes the celebration!   The night when everyone comes together to laugh, shout and enjoy each other’s company at Cruiseport for the Third Annual Art Haven Lobster Buoy Auction.

What better event to tie our incredible community together than the Art (Art Haven) and Sole (fishing community) in one huge collaborative ball of positive energy?

THIS IS IT!!!!!!

I can personally tell you this event is so much fun.  To see these kids beaming on stage as their hand painted buoy gets bid on is absolutely priceless.

So get yourself and your family down to Art Haven and soak in all that positive energy baby!   It’s on Friday night at 6:00PM

Jan 28th- For More Info- http://www.arthaven.org/

Bikini and Speedo Dodgeball- It’s On! This Saturday At The Farm Bar and Grille

Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together? Last year over chicken wings at the Farm it hit me.  We had an opportunity to do something that’s never been done before and have an absolute blast doing it.  The Farm, if you haven’t already been there has a huge back yard just off it’s patio which is set up for volleyball in the summer.

All we need to do is register teams and it was a no-brainer great time.  So when Ryan Cox contacted me to ask me when we were going to get it done I looked at the forecast and it calls for 6 inches of fresh powder for Friday- the perfect set up for The First Annual Bikini and Speedo Dodgeball Tournament!

Now there is absolutely nothing better than when you can accomplish a win/win.  But when you can pull off the  win/win/win/win it’s the best of all worlds.

Think about this

  • We get to Raise Money To Save Boobs- Win
  • People get to witness the spectacle of a lifetime- Win
  • The Participating teams get their names mentioned with great publicity- Win
  • Everyone has a blast-Win

Now I’ve contacted several local restaurants and we have 3 local Gloucester teams Confirmed. The Farm is fielding two teams and there is already word that there may be two teams from Salem bars.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive in the very little time since pulling the trigger (last night at 5PM) with most of the local restaurants that I contacted telling me they would get a team together.   However I’m just going to put this out there that there was one local restaurant that I called and the woman I spoke with acted as if it was completely ridiculous and there was no way that she would play in a Bra and Panties Dodgeball tournament.

Now Really.  It’s not like we are asking men and women to wear G-Strings.  You can find Bra and Panties that cover up way more than you see every day of the summer at Good Harbor Beach.  Who the hell would want to patronize a bar whose owner is so uptight that they couldn’t grasp the fun of a Bra and Panties Dodgeball Tournament and on top of that, Who the hell would want to patronize a bar which didn’t support Breast Cancer Awareness?????

It’s going to be a whole lot of fun.

So who want’s in on the GMG team? Sharon? EJ? Meg Lee?Alicia? David Cox?  Thom Falzarano? Paulie Walnuts?  Sarah Kelley?  We need a team of five and at least 2 women.  Also it doesn’t only have to be contributors, we can have our regular commenters on the squad as well. I personally will sponsor the entry fee for our GMG Team out of the TShirt money fund.

If your business or group of friends would like to field a team contact Ryan Noah or Bradley at the Farm- farmbargrille@gmail.com

Huge thanks to the Boys at the Farm!

The event is now renamed Bikini and Speedo Dodgeball Tournament.

Dead of Winter at Inn Magnolia

Have you ever wanted to go on a ghost hunt?
Now’s your chance!

On Saturday January 15th, from 8pm to midnight, join author, radio personality, and paranormal investigator Ron Kolek and members of the New England Ghost Project for an investigation of Inn Magnolia. The elegant mansion has a history of unusual occurrences and many visitors have witnessed strange events.

Sign up for this special event and you will become part of the NEGP team as they attempt to collect evidence of paranormal activity at the inn. An initial investigation on Halloween revealed that the spirits there were more than willing to communicate but reluctant to disclose their true identities. Who haunts the inn? Is it one of the former residents, a sailor looking for a lost love, a struggling artist, an ailing child? Or is it something more sinister?

Join Ron and the rest of the NEGP crew for an unbelievable night as they and you attempt to unravel the mystery of Inn Magnolia. The price of this investigation is only $60 and space is extremely limited, so sign up today at www.neghostproject.com/magnolia.htm or for more information call 978-455-6678.

Overnight accommodations are available from the Inn for $20 off the already very low winter rates. Call 978-525-3642 or go to http://www.innmagnolia.com for room reservations.

Things To Do- Researching Alone at Sea, an illustrated talk with author John Morris

image

Researching Alone at Sea, an illustrated talk with author John Morris

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present Researching Alone at Sea, an illustrated talk with author and Gloucester native John Morris on Saturday, January 15 at 3:00 p.m. Morris will be discussing how a personal journey to learn more about his ancestors led him to the Cape Ann Museum Archives. This program is free and open to the public. Reservations are required. For reservations please call 978-283-0455, x11.

John N. Morris’s grandfather, Steve Olsson, was a Gloucester doryman who disappeared at sea without a trace in 1935. Olsson and his dorymate lost contact with their schooner and were never seen again. Morris set out on a quest to discover what might have happened to his grandfather and what a doryman’s life was like. The result—after ten years of exhaustive research and dozens of interviews—is the most complete and authoritative history of the Gloucester fishing industry ever written. This epic highlights life at sea, life at home, and the industry that connected them, growing and then fading over more than 300 years. Alone at Sea is illustrated with over seventy period photographs and maps, many of which came from the Cape Ann Museum archives.

John N. Morris, Ph.D., is the grandson of one of the last Gloucester dorymen lost at sea. A native of Gloucester himself, John is descended from a line of fishermen going back to the seventeenth century. His father was a fish cutter, his mother a fish packer. Director Emeritus of the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew Senior Life in Boston, a Harvard-affiliated hospital and research program, John has published widely in his field. A board member of the group preserving one of the last surviving Gloucester schooners, Adventure, he now lives in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts.

Funding for this program was made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which promotes excellence, access, education and diversity in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences, in order to improve the quality of life for all Massachusetts residents and to contribute to the economic vitality of our communities.

The Cape Ann Museum is located at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Museum is closed during the month of February, on Mondays, and on major holidays. Admission is $8.00 adults, $6.00 Cape Ann residents, seniors and students. Children under 12 and Museum members are free. Admission for Cape Ann residents is free during the month of January.
