Blue Shutters Inn Food & Wine Tasting — March 19 and May 7

From The Blue Shutters Inn Blog

Food & Wine Tasting Updates — March 19 and May 7

Check out the update below for details on our next Food & Wine Tasting, on March 19. If you can’t make it this weekend, you’ll have another chance later this spring — and we wanted to let folks know that there’s been a date change for this next event. We’re moving this second tasting to Saturday May 7 — it had been scheduled for April 30, but there were too many conflicts. We’ll still go with our Cinco de Mayo theme, featuring a selection of red and white wines and food items from Chile, Argentina and other countries south of the border. That’s also Mother’s Day weekend, and we thought this be a great way to show Mom how much you care. Think about it — bring her along so she can wake up Mother’s Day morning to the beauty of Good Harbor Beach, after tasting great food and wine the afternoon/evening before. There will be time to enjoy walks on the beach, and we’ll also have menus and recommendations for those interested in dining at one of Cape Ann’s many restaurants – and a guide to some of our favorite spots for drinks, shopping and entertainment.
For both of these events — around Saturday March 19 and Saturday May 7 — you can make it a weekend getaway and get a special Blue Shutters discount: book a room Saturday and get Friday night at half-price.
Call us for more details…and to reserve a room and a spot for one of these food and wine tasting events.

Think of a pub crawl but for yarn addicts. 🙂 We will be giving one lucky crawler a $500 Coveted Yarn Shopping spree among hundreds of dollars of other prizes in addition to awesome sales and promotions. Community Restaurants Celebrate the “Spirit of Community” with Fundraising Series

clip_image008

Serenitee Management, owners of Latitude43, Minglewood Tavern and Alchemy Bistro in Gloucester, as well as Cala’s in Manchester-by-the-sea, 15 Walnut in Hamilton, Backstage Bistro at NSMT and Hale Street Tavern in Beverly Farms renews its commitment to community with the second annual “Spirit of Community” Fundraising series – a winter-long effort to give back to the towns they serve. All six restaurants will host events that both honor community groups and leaders who go the extra mile and help to raise funds for the continuation and growth of important community resources.

The list of events is large and growing and the excitement around collaboration with organizations like the YMCA, HAWK, and Gloucester Education Foundation, local rotary clubs, National Autism Awareness and many other local and national causes has re-enforced the importance of sharing in the work of raising a village. “We are very excited to put our energy into supporting the needs of our communities, those same communities who have supported us throughout the years with their continued patronage, “says Jennifer Goulart Amero, events and marketing manager for the group. “The staff couldn’t be more excited about the events we have planned and about the potential to make a huge impact on groups that are such an important part of what makes a town a community, and who are suffering the most at the hands of a tough economy. Everyone likes to have a good time for a good cause.”

Community focus is the cornerstone of the group’s evolution. Mark McDonough, owner of Serenitee Restaurant Group with partner, chef Jeff Cala was a founding father of both Timebanks and the Cape Ann Farmer’s Market. From hiring local builders and electricians to decorating with local art, acting locally is central to every step they take. Says McDonough of his reasoning, “I create restaurants that create community. Breaking bread and passing plates with friends is what the whole dining experience is about. Finding ways to expand on that idea by creating meals that create conversation and both build and support the idea of community seems like exactly what we should be doing”.

Last year’s events included Ladies’ Night for HAWC at 15 Walnut in Hamilton, a benefit for Cape Ann Timebanks featuring Groove at Alchemy, Hale Street Tavern’s IheartHale Street PROM to raise money for the a Beverly High School Scholarship fund, several 10% back smaller group events and the conclusion of the series on April 29 – “Celebrate Gloucester” a major event to celebrate life in Gloucester, to honor community heroes and to raise much needed funds for the Gloucester Fishermen Athletics Program.

Year round events have been added to the year two Spirit of Giving calendar including The Alchemy of Art series at Alchemy restaurant which debuted in mid-November, celebrating the artistic spirit with a focus on education. Each month a local artist’s work will be shown, promoted and available for sale, with a 10% donation from each to the Gloucester Education Foundation (GEF), a group dedicated to bridging budgetary shortfalls in areas like arts and music. A year-end gala auction will wrap up the series with 100% of proceeds being contributed to the GEF.

Highlights of the year two series include the second annual “Bourbon on Rogers Street” Mardi Gras Fundraiser for YMCA Teens service mission to New Orleans. Last years’ event, held at Latitude 43 in Gloucester, raised several thousands of dollars for travel expenses for youth participants in a fun and festive evening. This year’s event will be held on FAT TUESDAY, Tuesday, March 8, 2011 from 5:00-close with 10% of dining room food and beverage sales going to the YMCA group, plus raffles, an auction and a live Dixie Land Band. Similar events include one benefiting the For Jake’s Sake Toomey Tramples Autism foundation will be held at Hale Street Tavern in Beverly Farms on Sunday, March 27 from 5-close, another for North Shore United Way on April 13th at Latitude 43 in Gloucester and a Cape Ann Timebanks “Friend raiser” Dance featuring the Paula Karakedis band at Alchemy Bistro on Saturday, March 26 from 9-close.

For information on upcoming events go the restaurant sites: www.latfortythree.com, http://www.minglewoodtavern.com , www.alchemybistro.com, www.calasrestaurant.com, www.fifteenwalnut.com and www.hale-street.com

Things To Do- Cape Ann Community Cinema Oscar Party Sunday Night!

Oscars Poster

The Super Bowl. The World Series. The Stanley Cup. Nope – never heard of ’em. We do know that as winter starts to come to a close, it’s time to celebrate, not only because it’s no longer necessary to chip the caked salt from your shoes every night, but because Academy Awards Night is imminent.

The Cinema’s annual WICKED AWESOME OSCARS PARTY is this Sunday the 27th, with doors opening at 7:30pm. Guests will get to vote on the 7 major categories, and one winner of a private movie party will be chosen at random from the field of most-right predictions. The Party is free to attend, with a suggested donation of $10.00 to benefit the Cinema.

The Oscar-nominated short films will be playing all weekend: the Animated shorts on Friday the 25th at 7:30pm, Saturday the 26th at 5:00pm and Sunday the 27th at 4:00pm; the Live Action shorts Friday the 25th at 5:00pm, Saturday the 26th at 7:30pm and Sunday the 27th at 5:30pm.
The new documentary, THE HARMONY GAME, about the making of Simon and Garfunkel’s legendary 1971 album, "Bridge Over Troubled Water," will screen on Thursday the 24th at 7:30pm for a special one-night-only engagement. Door prizes will include copies of the film and the album on CD.
Want the full schedule? Either visit our website, or download the whole shebang through March 31.

A NOTE ABOUT TICKET PRICING

We do our very best to keep prices low (we have the lowest concession prices anywhere), but from time-to-time, we must adjust for inflation. I won’t say that it pains me to announce an increase in ticket prices – it’s only 50 cents across the board – but effective March 1, 2011, tickets will be priced as such:

$9.50 ::: Adults
$8.00 ::: Students & Seniors
$6.50 ::: Members
Premium tickets (fundraisers, operas, ballets) will remain as-is.
Until then, discount tickets are available at the present 10/$60 price (they will be 10/$65 after 2/28/11). As a special incentive, we are offering a seat to our WICKED AWESOME OSCAR PARTY to anyone who purchases this 10-pack before February 27th (the date of the party). This applies to first-time buyers (who will receive a free Cinema membership with discount and DVD borrowing privileges), as well as existing members who have just run out of the discount tickets. It’s still a wicked good deal all around, considering the quality of the programming, the uniqueness of the atmosphere and the fact that you don’t have to schlep Up-The-Line for any of it.
Thank you for helping us end our year for the first time in the black. Granted, it’s only 48 cents in the black, but hey – we’ll take it!
See you soon,

Rob Newton

Bout #1

Boston Massacre vs New Skids on the Block(Montreal)

Montreal and the Massacre have met several times over the last few seasons, but this marks the Skids’ first trip to Shriner’s Auditorium. They’ll br bringing their neon to Boston for the Massacre’s home opener. Long known for their good humor and amazing half-time shows, Montreal spent 2010 showing the WFTDA world what’s up on the track. They swept their games at Philly’s East Coast Extravaganza and made their first appearance at Eastern Regionals. Boston defeated them in the first round of regionals, but Montreal put up a scrappy fight. They’re likely looking for revenge, and this time on Boston’s home track. Keep your eye on two phenomenal Skids jammers, Iron Wench and Ewan Wotarmy. Both have been known to sprint to 20 point jams. Their blockers are no slouches either, with Jess Bandit and Smack Daddy doing serious damage in the pack.

Bout #2

Cosmonaughties vs Nutcrackers

The last these two teams saw of each other, the Cosmos were skating to a playoff’s victory while the Nuts settled in for the third place in the 2010 home team standings. There’s a lot to prove in the home opener, and the Nuts would like to take home a victory fresh out of the gate. The Cosmos, always a bridesmaid, never a bride, are looking to kick off what they hope will finally be a Golden Fez Championship season in 2011.

The Boston Derby Dames are Boston’s first and only all-female, DIY, skater-owned and operated flat track roller derby league and proud members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.
