Sista Felicia’s Homemade St Joseph Semolina Pasta Recipe
Every Sicilian family makes their homemade St. Joseph Pasta slightly different. Some use eggs, some use white flour, some use semolina , and others use a combination of both. The combination of ingredients and the pasta’s thickness really determines both the taste, and texture of the final traditional pasta dish. The St. Joseph “Goranza” is traditionally made with Cauliflower fava beans, chic peas, and fennel frauns. Some Sicilian families add several kinds of beans and some add the stalks and bulb of the anise. Like all Italian and Sicilian recipes ….each family has their own twist. Many make this pasta extremely thick and heavy, I do not. Over the years I have developed this pasta recipe and mastered the technique of making it. If your looking for a pasta recipe that’s tender and delicious this is the recipe to follow….Even The Godmother of Gloucester “Sefatia” gave it the 2 thumbs up. She loved it so much she took 5 lbs. home after last years feast celebration.
This year we made 130 lbs. of Pasta, for our St. Joseph Feast, which we will be celebrating this Saturday. 130 lbs. of pasta may sound like a lot but, part of the tradition for me to keep alive is the tradition of send family and friends home with a container of St. Joseph Pasta. I can vividly remember a long line of people waiting with containers in hand during my Uncle Mike and Aunt Vincie’s St. Joseph Feast Day. A line from her stove in the kitchen, went through the house, out the front door and down the street 2 city blocks. People waited hours to get a potion of blessed pasta. For the past few years I decided to take that tradition one step further, and send my family and guest home with a bag of dried pasta, and small container of St. Joseph Goranza, so they can prepare and enjoy it one more time at home. It has become the grand finally of our feast day. Everyone waits in line for their opportunity to digs into the giant containers of stored pasta. Each fills a plastic bag up with homemade dried pasta, and heads to the kitchen to pick up their container of Goranza by the stove top. This new tradition is another Gift Of Gold that I hope to pass on to the next generation!

The Linquata Family St. Joseph Altar From The 40’s
Dolores Sheehan shares~ Linquata family in the 40’s celebrating St, Josephs at 55r Main St (now the Dogbar Parking Lot)
Dolores, thank you for sharing this beautiful photo with GMG !
The Linquater Family is a perfect example of a Sicilian Family here in Gloucester who is known to keep up family traditions throughout the year, for many generations. I have been blessed to attend many of their celebrations over the years
Old St. Joseph Altar photos are so much more than just old photos. They are priceless treasures, tangible documents, which link us back to the roots of this cultural tradition that our ancestors started many generations ago. Each photo depicts volumes of family stories and shared times together. Yesterday while driving in the car with my twins, the topic about the importance of keeping tradition came up. My son asked me “Mah why is it so important to you to keep up the traditions that your grandparents kept?”I took a moment to gather my thought, in how to best give an example that they’d forever remember… Continue reading “The Linquata Family St. Joseph Altar From The 40’s”
St. Joseph Noveana 2014 Kickoff Night
I said it before and I will say it again, some of my fondest memories growing up were the times spent with family and friends celebrating the Feast Of St. Joseph. Last night was amazing! Two of my biggest mentors surrounding the Feast of St Joseph came to lead us in prayer last night at our family altar. Thank you Rosalie Foti & Sefatia Giambanco Romeo Thaken, for making the night extra special. Having you, Marie Silva, Jen Anderson, Ann Margaret & Francis Ferrante all in at the same altar was truly a gift . What a great warm up for the official start of the 9 days of nightly novenas beginning tonight at 7:15. It truly was a night that all who attended will always remember.
Coffee Time with “The Godmother Sefatia”…If the photos could talk….
Thank you Parina~Godmother for making us laugh you have a heart of gold and we all adore you!
I especially want to thank my dear friend & GMG Contributor Craig Kimberley for filming last night…I’m sure he will be posting his amazing photography from last night on GMG soon.

International Women’s Day Celebration ~ Festa Della Donna
March Always Brings Me Back To My Childhood
March always brings me back to my childhood. Always.
Some of my most cherished memories growing up are from times spent with family and friends celebrating the Feast of St. Josephs at Great Uncle Mike and Aunt Vinci Militello’s home on School Street here in Gloucester.
For as far back as I can remember…. March 11-19th was spent in their home honoring St Joseph with traditional song and prayer. All recited in Sicilian. My aunt and uncle’s home altar was one of many set up throughout the city. Dozens of families shared this 9-day tradition honoring St. Joseph.
Twenty five years ago…. there were over 30 families…. who constructed religious altars within their homes, in and around central Gloucester. Each home was open to family, friends, and neighbors who wanted to participate in the 9-day devotion honoring St. Joseph. Women and children gathered and prayed for a special intention every afternoon and or evening around the handcrafted altars.
Each altar was uniquely draped in silk fabrics, Italian lace, and fragrant fresh flowers, which were replaced routinely throughout the Novena.
The shrines were brightly lit from the glow of vigil candles. These vigil candles were lit by guests who were praying for a special intention. The construction and setup of each family altar, was, and still is a monumental event, marking the years kickoff to St. Joseph’s Feasts and all its festivities. The process of washing the saints, selecting a theme color, making adjustments to the altars design to accommodate new statues, and setting up the home to accommodate large crowds of people, remains a special hosting family tradition today.
Years ago, most every Sicilian family living in Gloucester celebrated St. Joseph’s Day like it was Christmas. On March 19th, many adults stayed home from work and most Sicilian children were allowed to stay home from school to celebrate the feast with family and friends. Over the years, the numbers of family altars, in and around Gloucester, have sadly dwindled down to a mere dozen.
After the death of my Uncle Mike, Aunt Vinci continued to host the family altar for a few more years. But it simply wasn’t the same without Uncle Mike’s presence. Eventually my cousins stowed away Uncle Mike and Aunt Vinci’s treasured statues, saints, and angels in vetrina Cabinets, in the living room, where they remained until last year.
I spent years quietly reciting the St. Joseph rosary by myself from March 11-19th. Then, one year, my dear friend Rosalie Orlando extended an invitation to me to join her family at their altar on Prospect Street. Thrilled and honored to participate once again, in a true customary way, I joined their family with my daughter Amanda and son BJ in tow. Filled with emotions I sat next to Zina Saputo, Rosalie’s aunt, who took me and my daughter under her wing and guided us nightly, through the prayer service, clarifying pronunciations as needed. Within days my kids were humming the songs on our morning drives to school, and I felt a sense of peace knowing my children were experiencing this amazing tradition that has always been dear to my heart.
Last year… after 6 nights of the same vivid dream of a red and white altar….I called my Militello cousins and shared the details of my vivid altar dream. With only (5) saints of my own on hand, my husband Barry constructed my *vision* in our living room the very next day! My cousin, Eleanor, packed up Uncle Mike and Aunt Vincie’s treasured altar valuables and gifted them to me. Last year my family and I hosted our families St Joseph Altar after twenty years in retirement. It was truly an inspirational and spiritual event.
My hope for this year, is that people (like me), who once faithfully celebrated this deep rooted Sicilian tradition growing up (and have longed to have it back in their life), find their way to our family’s altar with their special intentions, and participate in the nine day St. Joseph Novena with us.
This past Monday evening I posted a list of questions on Facebook: Did you grow up celebrating the Feast of St Joseph during the month of March? Do you still celebrate St. Joseph’s Day? How many years ago did you or your families stop celebrating? Are you longing to expose your children to this Sicilian tradition you were raised with?

Jacqueline, extended an invitation to this years SeArts Wearable Art Runway Fashion Show shortly after the release of my cookbook, “Gifts Of Gold In A Sicilian Kitchen With Sista Felicia, Harvest” this past August. Thrilled and honored to take part in this wonderful event I immediately excepted her invitation, and started designing 2 pieces for the show. The first piece to hit this years runway was made from recycled drink coasters, embellished with the GoodMorningGloucester.Com “My View of Life On The Dock” Homie logo.
The second wearable art piece made and featured in the lattest Art New England Magazine March/April issue was inspired by the Gifts Of Gold my grandparents gave on to me that sparked my passion for cooking and my passion for continuing to keep my Sicilian family traditions alive for future generations. The” Gifts Of Gold” flapper style dress was carefully hand swen together by my mother Pat Ciaramitaro and I, using fishing twin and 10 lbs. Metalic Gold Ziti Pasta. The dress was modeled by my daughter Amanda Mohan. Linehan’s Photography, photo, of Amanda painted in metallic gold from head to toe modeling the “Gifts of Gold Pasta Dress” is featured in their March/April 2014 issue on page 29.
During yesterday visit to Art New England Magazine headquarters in Boston, Rita and Judith were shocked to learn…( click see more for story & behind the scenes photos)

Sweet Happenings At Appleton Farms
Over the years I have spent many hours picking fresh produce with my twins and nieces in the expansive fields at Appleton Farms. Our weekly trips could best be described as mini adventures. Each week we began in the barn, reading the current weeks list of allotted share items, before heading out into the fields with our baskets, clippers, and containers. Sharing stories and memories from my childhood in my grandparents garden with the kids while picking our share, was something the kids quickly became accustomed to. They often requested their favorite stories to be retold, and we often talked about recipes that could be prepared by using the items surrounding us in the fields, planning out our snacks and meals for the week throughout the seasons was something we all enjoyed doing.
Many photos of Appleton Farms gorgeous scenic settings are featured in my cookbook “Gifts Of Gold” surrounding the pages of a story I share that is very dear to my heart. Last week during a meeting at the Reservation, I was excited to learned that Appleton Farms will be hosting numerous opportunities for share holders and the general public to visit the Reservation throughout this upcoming season.
I’m thrilled to announce that I will be hosting cooking demonstrations, using freshly picked produce from the fields of Appleton in their barn throughout the 2014 season. GMG will be sharing their events and news throughout 2014 season under Sista’s Dish weekly. This week their season will kick off with all things Maple Sugar! The events are listed below, and they sound amazing for all ages!
