Joey Ciolino picked me up for a 5 minute row yesterday. I’m hooked. What a blast. Now if I could only get a few moments to be able to get out on the water. sigh.
Frank Ciolino will be on the beach capturing video and calling in the race results this morning. Live from Niles Beach. If you can’t get there this morning (shame on you) you can tune in here for the results.
The races start at 9AM and usually last until about 11:30. Stop in at Last Stop Variety for a cup of coffee and a blueberry muffin and head on down to catch some of the excitement. The light is awesome this morning.
Saturday, 8:30 a.m., Niles Beach – The Elimination Races will be held to determine who will represent the US vs. Canada on June 20th.
If you’ve been watching the GMG coverage of the International Dory Races and the building of the dories at Geno Mondello’s shop, if you want to buy some raffle tickets for the handline dory, if you want to share part in a great Gloucester tradition-
Head on down to Niles beach tomorrow morning for the elimination races.
It’s a great thing to take the family to and you can register to become part of the action, you can buy t shirts, get row hard or row home bumper stickers.
Here’s the scenario- you pack the kids in the car, go to Last Stop Variety, grab a cup of coffee and one of their incredible muffins (blueberry and morning glory are awesome) and then go to Niles to catch the action.

Yesterday Gussy Sanfilippo and Billy Edmonds swung by the dock along with Billy’s son Kyle and FOB (friend of the blog) Frank Ciolino’s son Joey.
We took a row around the South Channel, had a quick race on the dories and talked to Gus about predictions for fish prices with the June 1st fishing grounds area opening. The first part of the videos will air this morning at 8AM

These guys don’t care. They are competitors and this year they want to win it all. To all of the rest of the Dory crews don’t say you haven’t been warned! If you are sitting at the computer reading this you are not training and Marc and Joe will be eating your lunch come race day!

I swear he must be missing the cold gene. This morning he was battling through the ice to get to Zeke’s. Pete Mondello plowed through with his big Novi Boat and cleared a path for him though.
Some people slip into retirement content to sit on a warm couch watching the news in the morning and sipping hot coffee. Not Damon, he would rather row a grand banks dory in 10 degree weather. God bless him.

I’ve noticed that Damon has been really scooting along in his dory lately. I’m wondering if he is in training to beat up on those Canadians next summer, if he knows winter is coming so he wants to shed any unwanted pounds knowing the winter is when most pack it on, or if it’s just so frickin cold that he wants to get his ass over to Zeke’s for breakfast and out of the cold.
