GMG Q&A With Rocky Neck Artist In Residence Melinda Hannigan

Local Website everyone should know about (excluding GMG)
My website is www.melindahannigan.com

How long have you lived in Gloucester?
One month.
What is your favorite season In Gloucester?
Right now.
Do you have any secret outdoor spots in Gloucester where you go to “get away”?
Why would I want to get away?
What is your favorite pizza joint in Gloucester?
I’ve only been to Sebastiani’s and it was great.
What is your favorite sub shop in Gloucester?
Oh dear.  Have a missed a Gloucester specialty?  I have a few more days here.  How about you telling me where I can get the best sub in Gloucester?
What place would you go for a romantic dinner in Gloucester?
How about a picnic at the beach: wine, great sandwhiches and soup from the Last Stop, chocolate cake from Charlies.
What is your favorite bar in Gloucester?
The Rudder.  Not only do they make me welcome but I can stagger home after one of their martini’s without driving.
What is your favorite breakfast joint in Gloucester?
I do my internet at the Lone Gull and have enjoyed their scones.
What is your favorite local event in Gloucester?
I wish I had been here for the schooner fest.
In the summer do you prefer the beach or to be on a boat?
Maybe next time I am in Gloucester I will be here during the summer and would love to explore by boat.
Who is your favorite local artist?
This is hard. Rocky Neck has so many talented artists. But I would say the work of Ruth Mordecai suits my sensibilities.
Which is your favorite local beach?
Good Harbor.  What a treasure.  Puget Sound has so few sandy beaches.
Who has the best chowder in town?
I have made it my mission to have chowder everywhere I go.  I can assure you Gloucesterites that nothing in the seafood capital of the West Coast,  Seattle, compares with even the most mediocre chowder in Gloucester.  I’ve had so much chowder at so many places that I can’t pick a favorite.
Excluding GMG what is your second favorite local blog?
Is there another local blog?

Do you prefer haddock chowder or clam chowder?
I love clam chowder.
What were your thoughts on The Downtown Block Parties last year?
I wish I had made it to one but I saw the photos on the GMG blog.
What is your favorite local band?
I play doghouse bass.  Next visit maybe I could jam with the locals
Thanks, Joey

Things To Do- Nights On The Neck Thursday September 3rd

Please join the Rocky Neck Art Colony for Nights on the Neck, an evening of gallery receptions and entertainment, on Thursday, September 3, 5-9 pm, featuring

Three Sheets to the Wind

The Schooner Adventure organization spawned Three Sheets to the Wind, a group of local musicians and Adventure crew members who are preserving the history of maritime work songs (chanteys) and forebitter songs.

Rick Drost

Rick Drost began singing with a Kingston Trio-style group in high school, continued in a small folk group in college, then a glee club and an opera chorus. He started writing and singing around coffeehouses in DC and New England in the ‘70s, finally settling in Cambridge MA where he started playing with the folk-rock group Parts and Labor.  He performs at least once a week, wherever he goes, and has enjoyed stints with great instructors and students at Song School in Colorado , SAMW and other workshops.

Rick Berlin

Rick Berlin sings honest narrative (sometimes funny) songs from the torn pocket of the heart; his style has been compared to Waits, Weil, and Newman. Rick’s impressive past credits in the Boston music scene include Orchestra Luna/Luna, Berlin Airlift, Rick Berlin–The Movie, Rome is Burning, Rick Berlin–The Awful Truth, and The Shelley Winters Project. He was a regular at Jacques in Boston ’s Bay Village for nine years, and now appears frequently at the Lizard Lounge, among many other places.

Chris Brokaw & Geoff Farina

Chris Brokaw & Geoff Farina, both well known in the indie rock scene, will play pre-World War II country blues songs on acoustic guitars and vocals, including such favorites as Stagger Lee and Trouble in Mind.

Geoff Farina

In 1998, Geoff and his bandmate, Jodi Buonanno, purchased and renovated the Narragansett Grange Hall, a historic public building that would otherwise have been demolished.  With the aid of a HUD program they made the building into music and painting studios and living space, and for seven years provided living and studio space to annual artists in residence. Geoff will talk about his experiences developing the project.

Boston Derby Dames

A group of Boston Derby Dames, Boston ’s first and only all-female, DIY, skater-owned and -operated flat track roller derby league, will make a swift but no-doubt high impact appearance on Rocky Neck Avenue.

Additionally, Sigrid Olsen & Kathleen Archer invite you to a cocktail party at their galleries, ISLA Beach House and Painted Bird, at 77 Rocky Neck Avenue.

From Dave Sag on the Rhumb Line’s Thursday Night Blues Party

“Got a special show for y’all this week as I drag my dearest friend, John Rankin, out of the slickery swamp of Louisiana and wring  him dry on  Fred’s font of perpetual resurrection: the Rhumb Line. Educator, performer, vocalist, citizen, weekend father, this guy can do it all, and at the same time, too. He’ll be digging deep into that good ol’  Nawlins pile of steaming R&B, and throwin’ in a coupla originals to boot. You gotta hear this.

Behind him, pushing the beat will be our old buddy, Forrest “gump” Padgett on heart attack drums, Paul  Ahlstrand on tenor twelve sax, and yers trooly on base. C’mon down and tell John how much you like my punctuation!”

WhaZat? Winner! Mike Again!

This week’s winner is Mike once again. He guessed that our mystery boat was the Nantucket Lightship II on the railways in Rocky Neck in 2005 or 2006. Congratulations, Mike! You can pick up your prizes at Capt. Joe’s!

Full copyClick on the photo for more info on the Nantucket Lightship and here too.

Lightship 612 was completed in 1950 at the Coast Guard Yard and sailed for the West Coast where she served as San Francisco Lightship for 18 years and then for a short period (1969-1971) as Blunts Reef Lightship. The ship then returned to the Atlantic Coast, the only lightship to have transited the Panama Canal both ways. 612 served as Portland Lightship, 1971-1975, and then as Nantucket II. In 1983 the last lightship station, Nantucket, was discontinued and 612 had the unique distinction to become a white cutter, sent to the Caribbean to act as a fueling station for the SES (surface effect) vessels engaged in drug interdiction.. When this assignment ended, the ship returned to Boston and was decommissioned in 1985, concluding 35 years of Coast Guard service.

Rudder Reconstruction Update 3/30/09

They saved the original floor.  There was a layer of flooring that was put right down over the original floor.  It is being restored to the original floor which is estimated to be over 100 years old.  Throughought the project care was taken to try to save as much of the original elments from the building.

Rudder Reconstruction Original Windows

These are the original windows.  It would have been much easier and less costly to use new windows. The owners commitment to saving as much as possible of this building throughout the rebuild is commendable.

Rudder Reconstruction Update 3/30/09

The crew has a deadline for opening and The Rudder should be open on time without skipping a beat.

Rudder Reconstruction Update 3/30/09
