Maybe It’s All We Need

“We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about.”

Red Skiff Eggs Benedict with hash

My daughter wants to see every sunrise but I slipped up this morning and was out there at 6:15 AM and even though I would call it rising in her book it was way too late. To console her we all went to The Red Skiff for breakfast. A rock throw from the lighthouse in the middle of the street (OK locals tell me the name of it).

To do my cub reporting correctly I had the special listed at the top of the whiteboard. Eggs Benedict with hash. I think it was red hash.

[Expletive deleted], [Expletive deleted] my goodness this was good. From bottom to top, English muffin, soft but still with a crispy top, the hash, rich and no diet reduction working here, on that a perfect poached egg, not runny but it was just a few seconds before it was pulled, then a remarkable Benedict sauce on top.

After the first bite I said: “self, if you eat this and the home fries you are going to regret it. Do not touch them. (I listened to myself and the home fries went doggy bagging home to a late sleeper who enjoyed them)

But back to breakfast. I did not share, I wanted it all. The hash was amazing. I don’t want to argue about who has better hash. Two Sisters is in the running. But when you layer all these good things and keep the crunch in the top of the english muffin while everything else is going all gooey this was a good start to the day.

I was purchasing ping pong balls at Cracker Jacks an hour later. Trying to find change I mentioned that, oh, don’t have the quarter since I put it in the meter in front of the Red Skiff this morning and then we get to talking about hash and how she doesn’t like hash because as a kid it was not so good. I felt the same way my entire life until a few years ago. Hash when you were a kid was terrible. Your parents were making a cheap meal made of leftovers and a potato. I think I may have convinced her to try hash again for the first time.

I used to hate peas for the same reason. Seven kids and mom plates canned peas in front of you they were terrible. Now one of my favorite foods just poking out of the garden this week.

Update: Peeps III coming, Art has Revenge, they are back at Shaws.
I missed my 2PM deadline because of kayaking to Pigeon Cove before the big black cloud arrived. But I have Homie pics from that.

One Found, One to Go!

One of the Rocks I Sketched on and left on Pebble Beach was Found. Here is the Email I received;

“Cool, Found your Rock.. What a Great Idea! Love it! Keep it Up! Found on Sat. 3/27”

I was surprised with the nice  emails I received commenting about it. I thought it was a little Silly. But I guess you never know what will interest some people. Maybe because it’s FREE?

There is still one  left.  It was left on a Barrier Rock not far from the one that was found at Pepple Beach in Rockport.

It’s a little smaller than the one that was found. If anyone finds it and would like their photo on GMG just give me an email, It’s on the Rock. GOODLUCK?

Look for some more Art Rocks Strewn about Gloucester Soon.

SailGHS Launch Their Boats!

The GHS Sailing Team Launched their Boats Sunday Morning in preparation of the 2010 Season. Students, Parents, and Volunteers pitched in to get their Boats in the water. Get down to the State Fish Pier when they are practicing, it’s always fun to see them racing around and practicing their capsizing drills.

Here’s some info from SailGHS Administrator Patti Paige;

The GHS sailing team is a co-ed team consisting of middle school and high school sailors.  Currently, students from Rockport, Gloucester and home-schooled children participate in the program.  The spring sailing season begins April 5 and runs through May 28.  Fall sailing is held in September and October.  We meet Monday through Thursday from 3:00 pm until 5:30 pm.  We sail in Gloucester harbor and conduct a learn to sail program where inexperienced students sail in Rhodes 19.  More advanced sailors belong to the racing team and sail in Vanguard C-420s.

GHS sailng team is a member of the Massachusetts Bay League (MBL) high school sailing organization which is located at the Community Boating Center on the Charles River in Boston, MA.  MBL organizes racing events between local high schools in three divisions.

Anyone interested in sailing with us, students and adults alike, can contact me at either sailghs@yahoo.com or by calling me at 978-283-4676.

FIND ME!

If  you find  it you can have it,  or in the Fraggle Rock Christmas Tradition pass it on.

I did a few quick sketches on a couple of rocks at Pebble Beach in Rockport about 2:15pm Today.

I left them on the big barrier rocks there.

Find them before the Seagulls critique my Artwork.

Sandy Bay Solstice Submitted To The GMG Flickr Group Pool By Thomas Philbrook

Thomas Philbrook Writes-

This is the view from our deck above Front Beach in Rockport — stitched together from three shots. We get to watch Summer thunderstorms whip across Sandy Bay from west to east. This is one of those storms last year. I confess to adding the schooner on the right — but this is pretty much the way it looked. Cross my heart.

Explore the Secret World of Bubbles

From the Beacon
Rockport —
All programs at the Rockport Public Library are free, open to the public and handicapped accessible. The library is at 17 School St. For more information on all events, visit rockportlibrary.org.

Bubble artist Keith Michael Johnson will entrance youngsters with bubbles that seem to defy the law of gravity when he appears on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 10:30 a.m. in the Brenner Friends Room.

Bubbles are fun to make, but there are reasons why they seem to behave magically. In a program geared to children in grades K-6 and up, the science behind the magic unfolds like a mystery. The audience learns why water won’t make bubbles on its own and where rainbow colors come from.

Johnson notes that for good, clean fun, nothing beats a soap bubble the size of your car. His eye-pleasing tricks include creating bubbles with his bare hands and building a tower of bubbles on top of an inverted glass.

A graduate of Ringling Brothers Clown College and a professional performer for elementary audiences, Johnson uses science and art to help children use their imaginations and creativity to explore and understand the world around them.

The program is appropriate for elementary youngsters and the young-at-heart of all ages. In case of severe weather, the snow date for the event will be Sunday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. This event is funded by the Friends of the Rockport Public Library.

The Greenery 1970 and Today

The first shot is an old postcard view out the back window of The Greenery in 1970. The second shot I took while sitting at the round table to the left while having lunch with my daughter and her friends in the Spring of 2009.

Amazing how nothing has changed out that window. (OK, I know it isn’t the same Motif #1.) Unfortunately it all changes tomorrow as there is an auction starting at 9:30 AM to sell off everything inside The Greenery.  The other shots I took while I was there show a lot of paintings on the walls and the identical table and chairs from the 1970 shot. Might be a chance to walk away with a little piece of history.

When I was in the process of buying a house in Rockport in 2008 I spent more than a few afternoons using the Greenery free WiFi reading my email and having a cheeseburger. I could also swing by in the middle of the night and park in front and download updates.

Little Dinghies!
