The Pewter Shop

As I mentioned in another post, I went down to Bearskin Neck one evening last week in search of Christmas decorations to photograph. A variety of the shops have nice window displays, but one of the few places that is really lit up is the Pewter Shop. You can’t miss it!

Recently, we (Holy Family Parish) bought a set of pewter cups and bowls from this shop for use at Mass, and at the time I was impressed by both their beautiful variety of pewter wares and the friendliness of the proprietors.  I decided to go back to photograph some of the beautiful things they sell. It would be a good place to go for some elegant Christmas or Chanukah gifts.

Walking in and seeing everything shine makes quite a first impression.

Among the treasures they offer is a large variety of Christmas tree decorations.

Being a deyed-in-the-wool fantasy fan, I count these dragons among my favorite items in the store. I'll buy one someday...
Irish Pewter

They aren’t kidding about this being “Irish Pewter”. I saw these same items being sold in gift shops in Ireland earlier this year. Surprisingly, the price at this shop in Rockport is as good or better than what I saw in Ireland…

Don’t forget to go through to the back side of the store (as I did the first time I was there)…

Don't miss it!

New Work at the Quinn Gallery

A few days ago I posted about my visit to Eugene Quinn’s gallery.  He’s having a reception this coming Saturday:

Christmas Concert and The Cradle Song

Today at 2:00PM, Holy Family Parish will be having a Christmas Concert at St. Ann’s Church. All are welcome!

The other day I went to see “The Cradle Song”, a play presented by the Cape Ann community theatre group,  Theatre in the Pines.  The players did a great job! It’s worth seeing – you can still catch the Sunday, December 4th, 3:00PM production (if you are not at the Holy Family Christmas Concert) at Spiran Hall, Rockport.  Here are a few snapshots from the Friday performance.

Santa Visited Rockport Today!!

It’s true, the actual real, not a mall Santa, visited Rockport today. I’ll put a larger article together for tomorrow with complete details but these rush photos of the breaking news. (As always, click on the photos to go to a much larger shot.)

Santa says HO HO HO to Rubber Duck:

The crowds were cheek to jowl (someone must have leaked the news that the Rockport Santa was actually the REAL SANTA CLAUS!!), but everyone was on best behavior so that no coal will be delivered to these folks’ stockings.

Rubber Duck had a ringside seat for the lighting but then Santa had to split with the truck before the tree was lit:

Bam! That just happened! (An animated GIF available tomorrow.)

On a side note, Santa thanks Brad of Hales Plumbing who fixed the leak in Santa’s basement on a Saturday within an hour of getting the call. Someone put something good in Brad’s stocking. Oh wait, Santa already knows he’s been very good.

Santa!! On Saturday!! Rockport Harbor!! 3:45PM!!!

As an annual tradition dating back centuries, Santa Claus rides into Rockport Harbor on a fishing boat, and then makes his way to Dock Square to light the tree. This is no mall Santa but the real thing!!

The day we have all been waiting for!

Saturday, December 3rd. Santa arrives at 3:45PM and the tree lighting is at 4PM in Dock Square.

Last year’s tree:

Wait for it. Bam! That just happened! Check out all the people in the audience as I stuck the two photos together. Hopefully you are using a browser that allows moving gifs.  Some people disappear. Magic Santa!

Santa in Rockport 2011; this Saturday December 3rd

Elfen wifi wireless reports that Santa will be arriving by boat in Rockport this Saturday December 3rd at 3:45PM. Santa disembarks at Bradley wharf then makes his way to Dock Square to flip the switch on the Christmas Tree at 4 PM.

The following is what it all looked like last year. This year we may be wearing shorts

Santa in Rockport 2010:

As if it was a tradition that went back centuries Santa Claus came to visit Rockport today. On the way to the harbor:

Time’s a wasting. Santa will be there at 3:45PM

The crowd packs the wharfs in the harbor as Santa’s arrival is just moments away:

Harbormasters Rosemary Lesch and Scott Story lead the way, the Freemantle Doctor with Santa, and the Coast Guard protecting the rear:

It’s SANTA!!! It’s SANTA!! It’s SANTA!!!

The crowd goes wild as Santa pulls into Bradley Wharf:

Santa thanks the skipper Mike Tupper of the Freemantle Doctor for the smooth ride while his mother-in-law Nancy McDowell looks on. (Nancy was the one who convinced us that Rockport was the best place on earth to live.) :

Low tide so Santa needs a bit of a goose up the ladder:

Carolers warm up the crowd as Santa makes his way down Bearskin Neck:

Dock Square is cheek to jowl of children all of which swore they had been nice and not naughty:

Santa’s ride is a vintage 1941 Fire Truck. Why buy new when used will do?

Eugene J. Quinn Studio Gallery

The other day I went for a drive to get some photos of Christmas decorations at local shops.  I tried Rocky Neck, but everything was closed and dark, so I ended up at Bearskin Neck in Rockport. Most shops and galleries were closed, but some have very nice Christmas decorations (which I’ll share in another post).  I had the pleasant surprise of finding East Gloucester resident Eugene Quinn still in his studio with an “open” sign in the window.

We had a very nice conversation. Although he and I have never met, it turns out we have met some of the same people in the past because one of his paintings ended up at one of the places where I studied in the seminary.   His work is very beautiful:

He seemed to be just finishing this up when I arrived.

Stop by and visit the gallery! His work is worth seeing first-hand. His regular hours from now until Christmas will be 10AM-5PM (although he may be around off-hours at times). His gallery is at 54 Bearskin Neck Rd., Rockport, MA 01966.

Thanksgiving Sunrise

Sunrise over the Rockport breakwater this morning. The one time I wish  I had a video camera. The sunbeam started over on the  left then tracked like an enormous searchlight across the Dry Salvages before lighting up the Straitsmouth Lighthouse.

Rockport Christmas Tree Donated By The Nagle Family Video- Skip Montello

Skip writes-

Hi Joey,

I had a chance to capture the event of "Christmas" coming to Rockport with the addition of a beautiful 33 foot Christmas tree in Dock Square that was donated by the Nagle family on White Way. The Rockport DPW and Ace Hardware teamed up to carefully cut the 50 + year old tree down and load it onto a flat bed truck for its short journey to Dock Square for all to enjoy during this holiday season.

Please feel free to post it up on GMG for all to see….

(Photos and slideshow choreography by Skip Montello)

Thanks Joey,

Skip

Great local food (steamed lobsters!), a beer tasting with brews from Cape Ann Brewing Co., cooking demonstrations with Frank McClelland, Laurie Lufkin, Christian Collins, Eric Lorden and Heather Atwood, hayrides, lots of scarecrows, local non profits, art activities for kids (including a Rockport Music-sponsored instrument making workshop) and great live music. Rockport’s HarvestFest was beautiful and a whole lot of fun. Cape Ann residents and visitors were able to celebrate the best of the season in one of the most beautiful towns in the New England. Many thanks to Esther Mathieu of Esther Mathieu Photography for documenting the day and allowing us to share her photographs!
