Dominic Nesta and his unmistakeable fishing boat ‘Tide Skipper’ coming home Friday night, with the Fort in the background. I think the pilot house on the small book gives it a very interesting, unique look, making it always easy to identify whenever seen in the Harbor.

Yesterday afternoon as the sun was setting I stopped down the Jodrey State Fish Pier to see if there was any ice left in the harbor. There was some, but it seemed mostly along the edges. Snapping photos of the Captain Joe fishing boat, I met the captain of the Captain Joe and, no surprise, his name is Captain Joe! He was super personable to talk with and asked whether I was speaking American English or was from Great Britain. I asked him from where was his accent and he said a combination of Sicilian and Italian. One of the crew joked and demanded a $100.00 per shot as he assumed I was working for an international magazine. Funny! I told them all about Good Morning Gloucester. If you read this Captain Joe, thanks for the photos of your beautiful boat in the setting sun!
I think the photos would be prettier if it were high tide, and will try again one afternoon.

Do you have a favorite Gloucester lobster boat? Two that come to mind immediately are the Stanley Thomas, painted in her classy red, white, and aqua blue, and the Degelyse, with her colorful orange flags. What’s yours?

Iain Kerr Interview with Discovery
Sunday morning Discovery Channel News was at Ocean Alliance filming a story about SnotBot, the organization’s new drone. The drone was created by a group of Olin College of Engineering students, under the direction of Professor Drew Bennet, in the College’s robotics lab.
“SnotBot will be used to collect DNA, bacteria, viruses and stress hormones from whale blows. The team also tested SnotShot, a machine that makes a simulated whale blow (with the capacity to simulate different blow types) on demand—a testing tool that will actually help the scientists in the field collect a control sample.
The SnotBot drone works something like this: “as SnotBot flies out to a whale that is approximately 300m from the research vessel, it hovers over a whale and the whale repeatedly blows onto a collection device. After the sample is collected and brought back to the RV Odyssey, the data is used to help interpret an animal’s state of heath through the analysis of bacteria, viruses, DNA, and stress hormones recovered from the whale’s blow.”

Yesterday morning after filming the sunrise at Good Harbor I headed over to the harbor to film the Gloucester fleet’s comings and goings. The Theresa & Allyson was bound for port and what a beauty! She is a stern trawler, a type of dragger. You can read more about her owner, Allyson Jordan, and the boats origins here: Eat Local Fish. Also, found on the website is a concise history of New England ground fishing.
While filming, I am also photographing and plan to make more posts about our Gloucester fishing boats. I am not knowledgeable about ships and boats, but am very interested to learn, and love photographing them because they are beautiful. If I make an error in description or caption, please let me know. I would really appreciate your help–thank you!
The taller ships start appearing around 1:50, but I liked seeing all the smaller boats, too. Look for the Stanley Thomas lobster boat closer to the beginning. After the Parade I walked out onto the rocky ledge near the Eastern Point Lighthouse, but as you can see in the second-to-last clip, a thunderstorm was on the way and I had to skedadle.
Beautiful Event to film-to many of us, Gloucester is our “somewhere over the rainbow.”
