The Motif No.1 Day Festival celebrates Rockport across the arts. And all of it centers around the fishing shack-artist’s studio-tourist attraction that started it all: an old building right on one of Rockport’s historic wharves that was painted so often by artists at the turn of the last century that it was given the nickname Motif No.1 by Lester Hornby, a well-known artist and instructor of the period.

Film, poetry, dance, music, and art-making activities are all a part of the festival, as well as historical presentations and a Motif No.1 Day 5k and Fun Run, with proceeds to benefit Rockport Public Schools’ wellness initiatives.

Raw Bar at The Fish Shack in Rockport on FRIDAY NIGHT

Say what? Yes, it’s true. Word on the street (the mean streets of Rockport, MA) is that Karin Porter of the Fish Shack (the restaurant, not the fish shack) in Dock Square is serving oysters along with a signature Motif No.1 Day cocktail to kick off the weekend’s pahtying in downtown Rockport in front of the Motif No. 1 Day festival on Saturday. Rockporters and assorted other types are eating raw mollusks in celebration of Motif No.1, Rockport’s famous fishing shack.

Motif No.1 is so famous that it has a festival dedicated to celebrating every inch of its surface, documented down to the last buoy and nail hole. It’s like Cape Ann’s very own Kardashian; we know everything about it and we still can’t get enough.

Come on down to Dock Square, eat oysters and lobster rolls, listen to music and generally party like it’s M1D:2015 this weekend! Because it is!

Keep this post handy, because it will guide you through the festivities in the expert way you’ve come to expect from Good Morning Gloucester, your guide to all things local.

Thursday, May 16th at the Blue Lobster Grille in Dock Square

  • The Inns of Rockport is sponsoring a DineAround at the Blue Lobster Grille on Thursday. 20% of the proceeds from your meal will go to support festival programming. The activities at Motif No.1 Day are free, so community fundraisers are an important part of keeping the festival alive in Rockport. Come out and enjoy a great meal while supporting a good cause!

Friday, May 17th at the Rockport Community House

  • Brown bag community supper, 5K race packet pickup & Motif 1 Short Film Festival Screening. Bring your supper (optional) to enjoy with friends and neighbors while checking out our 45-minute screening of short films. And if you’re registered for the Motif 1 Day 5K, you can pick up your race packet and number too! Filmmaker Emile Doucette will be on hand to talk about his work and his short film “Homemade Parade” which captures the unique spirit of Cape Ann.

Enter a Film in the Motif 1 Day Short Film Festival!!!

The Motif No. 1 Day festival celebrates art across different mediums on May 18th, and this year’s event is jam-packed with activities, which will be highlighted over the next few weeks. First part of the festival we’re highlighting on GMG? The Motif 1 short film festival, a new part of the event this year. The festival organizers are calling for films up to 10 minutes in length with Cape Ann as the subject. Any aspect of Cape Ann — industry, geography, the arts, the people — anything that conveys a sense of place. If you have something you’ve created, or know a filmmaker who is working on a piece on Cape Ann,  please submit a film or spread the word about submissions for screening consideration.  For more info go to www.rockportartfestivals.com. Motif No. 1 Day Schedule: Whew!

It’s almost here, and it’s happening, whether it’s sunny, rainy, sleeting or even snowing, Motif No. 1 Day in downtown Rockport kicks off Friday night with a free film by Les Bartlett and ends the next evening, May 21st at 6:00 with Vintage Rockport on Film: the 1950s. Both the kickoff and the finale will include Twin Lights soda (or tonic…) and the newest Twin Lights t-shirts will even be on hand for purchase. Below is the Schedule of Events. Eat for a good Cause!

We all need to eat, so why not eat for a good cause? Come to Ellen’s Harborside Restaurant on historic T-Wharf this Thursday, May 19th for a DineAround fundraiser and 20% of the proceeds from your meal will go to support the programming for Motif No. 1 Day & HarvestFest. This is a great way to begin the Motif No. 1 Day festival weekend which kicks off the next night in downtown Rockport. Rockport Festivals (in charge of Motif No. 1 Day & HarvestFest) is run by community volunteers and funded entirely through community sponsorship, so this event will go a long way toward making the festivals happen. Many thanks to the Inns of Rockport & the Rockport Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the DineAround and to Ellen’s for hosting it.

Downtown Rockport will come alive with music, art, dance and poetry on Motif No. 1 Day, slated for Saturday, May 21, 2011.
Motif No. 1 Day is a long-standing Rockport tradition, a chance to celebrate Rockport across the arts through the symbol of Rockport’s famous fishing shack, Motif No. 1, the subject of countless paintings and photographs throughout the last century.
Motif No. 1 Day brings a focus on the arts to Rockport, both past and present. The festival includes interactive art events such as the Sidewalk Chalk Art contest, a scavenger hunt throughout downtown, the famous festival Dock Square Chowder Stand, live music, historical presentations, art activities for children, and the Words Before Dinner event, a poetry reading featuring the beauty and history of Cape Ann as its theme. The festival closes with Rockport on Film: Vintage Images of Rockport from the collection of Pierce Sears, proprietor of the Thomas Wilson Beverage Co.
Jazz, Bluegrass, and classic American Band music will all be featured, with appearances by Merrimack Valley Rounders, Soul Force V and the Rockport Legion Band among others. The day also includes featured events at participating businesses and an exciting array of community events such as an Instrument Petting Zoo and other activities for children sponsored by Rockport Music at the beautiful new Shalin Liu Performance Center.
The festival kicks off on Friday, May 20 at 7 o’clock in Dock Square with the premier of The Fish Shack Float That Charmed Chicago: filmmaker, historian & photographer Leslie D. Bartlett’s new film featuring archival footage of Rockport and the story of Rockport’s success at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. The screening is free and film-goers will enjoy Twin Lights soda courtesy of Rockport’s own bottling company, the Thomas Wilson Beverage Co.

Calling All Creative People!

One of the highlights of last year’s Motif No. 1 Day was the Find-the-Motif Scavenger Hunt, where mini-Motifs were placed throughout Rockport’s downtown for festival-goers to discover. There were Motifs made of driftwood, papier mâché, sleek steel, and an especially crazy-awesome one made by Jud of Ace Hardware using action figures attached to a plywood Motif (with lights! and sound!). The people who make Motif No. 1 Day happen are looking for more submissions for this year’s festival on May 21st. The general dimensions are 2′ x 3′ so that Scavenger Hunt participants can spot the mini-Motif easily, but if your creativity leads you to create a Motif that’s a bit smaller — or larger — it’s no problem at all. To join in the fun, e-mail rockportfestivals@gmail.com and let them know  you’ll be making a Motif for the Scavenger Hunt. Submissions are due by Thursday, May 19th, and participants are asked to pick up their mini-Motifs in Dock Square at the close of the festival (7 pm on Saturday, May 21st).  To get you in the spirit of things, here’s an image of a kit for a paper Motif No. 1, sold online by Fiddler’s Green. Yours doesn’t have to be this perfect of course. It doesn’t even have to be red — just vaguely recognizable as the (arguably) most famous fishing shack/art studio/storage building in the known universe.
