New expanded space at Jane Deering Gallery opens June 1! Solo art show Bobbi Kovner Green Resolutions #GloucesterMA

News from Jane Deering

Opening Reception. Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 3:00-5:30 P.M. ‘Bobbi Kovner | Green Resolutions #1-12’ Jane Deering Gallery

“I am besotted by plants and flowers -their form, their color, their contrasting meaning and function…As markers of seduction and marriage, birth and death, serenity and celebration; As sexual receptacles vibrating with thrum, buzz, wind and heat; Indoors as cut, curated artistry and ornament; Devolving from their prime into rank chaos – faded, battered, hanging by a single thread to a stalk.”

Bobbi Kovner

Bobbi Kovner has a BA from Wheaton College; MA Degrees from Columbia University and Lesley University; and a diploma from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She has taught Theory of Design seminars and Advanced Drawing at Endicott College. Her work has been shown at the New Museum in NYC, Tryst Gallery, Forest Gallery, Gallery Lumiere, and the Attleboro and Springfield Museums in Massachusetts. Works are currently on loan to the Decordova Museum. Kovner has been selected for numerous exhibitions and awards. Her work is held in private and public collections. Kovner has completed multiple commissions for national corporations, including a 36-ft long mural for the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas commissioned through Creiger Dane Gallery. This is her first solo show at Jane Deering Gallery.

New Book From Sebastian Junger

A year ago this month, Sebastian Junger came to Gloucester to speak at a Gloucester 400+ event. Last night, he returned as a guest of the Bookstore of Gloucester on Main St to talk about his newest book In My Time of Dying. The book evolved from a near death life changing experience of Mr. Junger’s about 4 years ago. As with last May, his presentation was entertaining, informative and engaging. The City Hall Kyrouz Auditorium was packed to the gills with friends and interested residents for this intriguing topic.

I’ve read the book and am duly impressed (again) with Sebastian Junger’s writing style. He clearly does an overwhelming amount of research into his subjects. In fact, an impressive 19 pages of source material is listed and it’s obvious from the text that he’s done his homework. I noted several medical phrases such as you hear on those doctor shows. Some of them are complicated but he presents them in a way the reader can understand.

He presents the large questions of life and death in a thought provoking, but safe manner. I am of an age where my other retired friends are beginning to die and I’ve suffered several losses recently. It may be that my frame of mind was exceptionally ready to read and contemplate these exact questions. But I think the book will have wide appeal and suggest you put it on your reading list. Thank you Mr. Junger for sharing such personal insights. Well done on the Bookstore of Gloucester in arranging the event!

Fine Italian Wine Tasting at Savour, Saturday, May 25, 2 – 4 pm

THIS SATURDAY, MAY 25, 2 – 4 pm

COMPLIMENTARY

WINE TASTING WITH TOMMY MISTRETTA OF VINIFERA WINES

We have a very special tasting this Saturday of the wines of Vinifera, which is a distributor of boutique Italian wines.

Tomasso Mistretta comes to us from Florence, Italy. He knows the wines, their history, and the best food pairings, so come down Saturday and enjoy the great wines he is pouring and the wonderful stories from his Italian home.

WINES

NV Conte Vistarino, Tenuta Di Rocca de Giorgi, Pinot Nero, Brut Rosé Sparkling, Italy, 12.5%

Conte Vistarino is an 826-hectare (2041-acre) wine producer based in the Oltrepò Pavese region of Lombardy. In 1850, Count Augusto Giorgi di Vistarino was the first person to plant Pinot Noir in the region Oltrepò Italy by importing the shoots directly from France and, thus, giving rise to the tremendous sparkling wine tradition of the Oltrepò Pavese. Count Giorgi di Vistarino, son of Augusto, continued the legacy, always aiming for excellence. Today, his niece, Ottavia Giorgi di Vistarino, carries on the vital legacy of leading the family business while respecting its tradition of over 500 years of wine making. Approximately 140 hectares (346 acres) are devoted to cultivating Pinot Noir for the estate’s signature Metodo Classico sparkling and still wines. It is a captivating wine for its sensual softness supported by good acidity and fresh red fruit flavors. In the glass, it’s a pale pink with fine and persistent bubbles, with an aroma and palate of raspberry, wild strawberry, and yellow fruit. It has an enveloping and well-balanced finish. It pairs well with mushrooms, aged cheeses, and BBQ. $29.99

2022 Castagnolo Orvieto Doc Classico Superiore, Orvieto, Italy, Alc.12%

Born in the vineyards of the green hills of Umbria, bent by wind and caressed by the waters of Lake Corbara, this wine is a unique and intoxicating nectar from the passion of Luigi and Giovanna Barberani. Since 1961, the Barberini family has followed the ancient rite of the hand harvest with skilled hands, turning the grapes into a symphony of aromas and flavors in total respect for the land and tradition. It is a modern and innovative interpretation of the Orvieto Classico tradition. It results from a quality selection of grapes from 30-year-old vines and is both biodynamic and certified vegan.

The wine is a brilliant straw-yellow with a fruity aroma and an intense and complex bouquet. The palate has a persistent mineral crispness with pear, apple, and citrus notes. This wine is the ideal accompaniment for seafood appetizers, first courses, boiled and grilled fish, and white meat. It is also an excellent aperitif.

2020 Cascina Chicco, Roero Arneis, Anterisio, Canale, Piedmont, Italy, Alc. 13.5%

“Chicu” was the nickname of Nonno Ernesto, the winery’s founder. He was known this way among people from the Langhe and Roero region of Piedmont, reflecting the local tradition. It passed down from him to his son Federico, then to the current generation, and continues to represent each generation of the Faccenda family today. The winery and vineyard practice biodiversity and sustainability in all aspects of wine production, and most of the winery is underground to respect the World Heritage land area in which it operates. The Arneis white grape used for this wine is from the Anterisio zone of Canale in Piedmont, one of the most important places for the cultivation of Arneis. The taste is intense and persistent, with fragrant apricot apple scents and hints of chamomile and spice in the structured, long finish. It pairs well with hors d’oeuvre, pasta, and grilled fish. $27.00

2021 Mormoraia Sauvis, San Gimignano, Italy

Varietal: VernacciaAlc.13%

Mormoraia was an ancient convent surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, where only the murmur of prayers filled the air. In 1980, the entrepreneur Pino Passoni and his wife Franca bought it to give substance to their dream of building a vineyard. In 1990, a year after the birth of their son Alessandro, Pino and Franca inaugurated the renovation work on the Mormoraia estate and vineyards. In 1995 the first cellar was built, conserving the original architecture: arches and loggias, stone walls, ceilings with wooden beams, terracotta floors. The hectares of vineyards and olive groves around the estate are expanded, while modern techniques are adopted for the various stages of winemaking, such as aging in French oak barrels and barriques. In 2012 Alessandro Passoni, at the age of 23, became the manager of Mormoraia. Vernaccia is the typical vine of San Gimignano, and the straw yellow Sauvis is fruity, lively on the nose, with hints of hawthorn and apple. It is balanced, harmonious, and persistent on the palate, with a pleasantly acidic finish. Pairs well with fish, shellfish, white meats and fresh cheeses. $24.99

2022 Contesa Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Italy, (Montepulciano) Alc. 14%

Lying along the fertile lands of Collecorvino, the 50 hectares of Contesa vineyards in the Pescara hills are a heritage that the vineyard owners are dedicated to taking care of. The Montepulciano, Sangiovese and Trebbiano espalier vineyards are trained using the spurred cordon system, while the lakeside vineyard in the lower part of the hill, the realm of pecorino grapes, is trained according to the Guyot system with high plant densities per hectare and low yields to guarantee the highest quality. The Montepulciano pours ruby with garnet reflections. It has aromas of very ripe red fruit and jam on the nose, with hints of toasted cocoa. The taste is round, warm, and tannic. The wine is full-bodied, structured, and mature. It pairs well with roasted and braised meats, game, aged cheeses, and cured meats. $24.99

2016 iGreco, Cata Gaglioppo 2017, Calabria, Italy, Alc. 14.5%

Founded by Tommaso Greco, over half a century ago, it is now in its third generation and run by seven brothers. The company values authenticity and the history and meaning of the Calabria Region. They produce olive oil and white, red, and sparkling wines from the native vines of Nero di Calabria, Gaglioppo, and Greco Bianco. IGreco is the only Calabrian Company that uses the competence and professionalism, recognized worldwide, of oenologist Riccardo Cotarella. He serves as the president of Assoenologi, Italian Wine Oenological Association, and is a past winner of the “Oscar of Wine” as best winemaker. Riccardo works closely with the iGreco wine making team and tests the first samples of wine produced. This Gaglioppo red wine has a lively, intense red color with brick reflections, aroma, and a palate of red fruit, vanilla, cocoa, and licorice. The finish is balanced and soft with round and persistent tannins. Great with grilled meats and summer barbeques.$19.99
