I heard some of the most beautiful music from this band. The kind that makes you heart swell…When I walked into the room and saw the soft lighting and Brad singing solo it gave me the best feeling…Brad Byrd is one that I could listen to for forever. They are going to be at the Dog Bar for four more weeks. That’s if I heard correctly. Must see must hear.

Dave Sag’s Blues Party with ~ Erin and The Soul Drivers @ The Rhumb Line 8-11pm – 4.11.2013
Dave says,
I’m takin’ April 11, off. I’m putting’ on my muddy boots and heading’ down to N’Awlins once again to hang out at the BP Oil Spill® Festival. Sponsored by Walt Disney, this outfit really knows how to get down and dirty. Corporations are people, too, my friends, and I’m so pleased that their ads show their great humanity and humility. Now if I could just get that oyster to stop waving’ a white flag….
Filling in the cavity left by my departure will be that friendly drummer, Jeff Casper and his band: Erin and the Soul Drivers, with my favorite big-eared bass buddy, Mr. Russell Keyes.

And write this down: April 18 Ms. Mari Martin returns with a blistering band featuring Bob Enik, on glitar, Jim Gambino, on keys, and Andrew Jones, on Drums. Last time Mari sang here, the heavens opened and stayed open.
And April 25, welcome back Mr. Greg Lutrell, fabulous guitarist and singer. He’s just got back from China, where he’s been all winter playing music and hacking into North Korea’s Sun Yung Guy’s porno pod.
DON’T FORGET: we start at 8 pm now ,not 9. You’re the best. We love you!
I’m still not on Facebook, due to the large volume of nonsense, so , if you’ve got friends who want to know what’s going on, send me their email addresses. No pressure, no salesman will visit your home.

Bob Franke with John Schindler~Old Sloop Coffee House~ April 6, 2013, 7:30 PM
Day of show suggested contribution: $12
65 or over: $7, under 18: $5, family: $24
Bob Franke’s songs are considered classics, fueled by his deep faith and the real-life lessons taught him by his 30-odd years of playing everywhere from concert halls to street corners. Bob has appeared in concert at coffeehouses, colleges, festivals, bars, streets, homes and churches in 33 states, four Canadian provinces and England. His concerts have appeared in lists of the top five musical events of the year chosen by critics in the Boston and San Francisco Bay areas. In 1990, he was nominated as an Outstanding Folk Act by the Boston Music Awards.
Consider this list: Peter, Paul and Mary; David Wilcox; John McCutcheon; Sally Rogers; Lui Collins; Garnet Rogers; June Tabor. These well-known artists (and many more) all sing and record Bob’s music. Seasoned veterans and novices alike are drawn to the complex, warm-hearted spirituality and captivatingly clear-cut melodies of Franke’s songs.
“It’s his integrity. I always think of Bob as if Emerson and Thoreau had picked up acoustic guitars and gotten into songwriting. There’s touches of Mark Twain and Buddy Holly in there, too.”
– Tom Paxton

Originally from Saint Louis Missouri, John Schindler was influenced early on by that town’s rhythm and blues and his Oklahoma mother’s singing. This funky start was drastically tempered by a nine-year stint in a Catholic seminary where silence and Gregorian chant were his daily bread. After leaving the brotherhood, and armed only with his vow of poverty, John moved to New England and pursued the path of an itinerant musician, playing in sundry bands and bad barrooms. It was during this time, he realized, that his audience could not understand Latin.
Winner of both the 2003 Boston Folk Festival Songwriting Contest and the 2006 Rose Garden Coffeehouse Song Contest, John has also been a finalist in many other song contests.
“John Schindler is full of wonderful, insightful songs that will find their way into the repertoire of other folksingers. John’s songs really connect!”
– Dick Pleasants, WUMB

Meet Chocktaw Rocket
Chocktaw Rocket a fairly new band around town. I’ve seen them twice before. Once, when they made their debut at The Cape Ann Brewery last year and then again at The Dog Bar Cape Ann, about a month ago.
We had the pleasure of hearing them this week at The Rhumb Line’s Monday night open jam . They were the first band to go on to play after The Bandit Kings opened up the evening.
The first song they performed was one that I have never heard before “Everybody’s Gonna Be Happy”. It was so good that people hit the floor dancing and it seemed they very familiar with the tune.
Their second song was an original that Bill Foley wrote “My Type Of Girl”. Both songs were lively, fun and great to dance to.
I hope we get to see more of this band around town soon
Choctaw Rocket is:

Have a listen.
Thursday Night Blues Party with Dave Sag’s to host Steve Sadler, Dave Brown and Dave Mattacks 8-11 @ The Rhumb Line
Dave says,
The Large Hadron Collider is proud to present the mashup of the Gods this week as we attempt to create the Higgs Boson’s mate right here at the Rhumb Line. They said it couldn’t be done but they didn’t know we have slide swami Dave Brown being helped out by the commodious Steve Sadler and venerable Dave Mattacks. The sorties will accelerate around the track as the vibrating cesium atom ticks and tocks until critical mass is reached and unused brain cells splatter all over the place. Bring a dustpan! And rubber gloves!
But seriously, folks, this is going to be a very special night with dancing girls in grass skirts and plenty of umbrellas in the drinks, so, get there early and croon the night away. Oh, and remember : our special new hours are 8 to 11.
Cape Ann Museum – Music in the Courtyard
Wonderfully talented Gloucester native Mari Martin was singing jazz in the courtyard of the Cape Ann Museum this past Friday from 4 to 5PM, accompanied by bass and keyboard. Here is a slideshow of the event:
You can see the photos full-sized on my photostream on Flickr.
“Wish I could be wrong that often and get paid that much”
That’s what I hear people say when weather predictions fail, as they did this week. The Harbor Loop Concert and Seafood Throwdown were both canceled on Thursday due to warnings of severe thunderstorms and flash floods. Not a drop of rain fell. The Farmers Market braved the storm that never was and now they all look like geniuses! So next time the weather man or woman predicts severe weather on a Summer Thursday, go to Stage Fort Park and join the good people who put on the Farmers Market RAIN OR SHINE in defiance.
When light rain finally fell yesterday, the Zip Line Kid spent the entire time outside with a friend — not necessarily in defiance — neither of them seemed to care that it was raining. Or perhaps they were inspired by it. They got out a big barrel, filled it up with water, threw stuff in and went bobbing — reveling in the joy of childhood. Joey would have gotten a good picture of it. Vickie and I just sat on the porch with a glass of wine and relished the gentle warm rain on a midsummer night.
Regardless of what the unpredictable weather decides to hand us tonight, there’s plenty of good music around the Cape. It’s going on right now and will continue into the wee hours. See the full live music lineup here.
Allen Estes at the Cape Ann Museum
This was a free concert at the Cape Ann Museum, last Friday at 4PM. It was originally planned to be outdoors, but due to the threat of rain, it was held indoors. It was great! At the end I bought one of the CDs he was selling: “Live Souls”. His CDs can be bought on his website or at stores, such as Gloucester Music on eastern Main Street.
“Stay in the street,” we tell the Zip Line Kid, who sees 20 friends at the Block Party
No pictures (if you want pictures click here). Just a quick note to say that one main goal of the Block Parties (to build community) was realized last night for kids and adults alike.
Now that John has his own phone (more about that here) we figured he could enjoy a bit of freedom at the Block Party as long as he stayed within the blocked-off section of Main St. (sounds funny telling your kid to stay IN the street) and checked in with us every fifteen minutes or so.
At the end of the night, I asked how many friends he saw. “At least 20,” was his immediate answer. “Kids from the cast [Holiday Delights], kids from school, kids from camp, kids from St. Ann’s, kids from all over.”
Vickie and I connected with at least as many — and met a few new friends.
The Block Party worked!
But there’s more — a dozen live music choices on Cape Ann today. Keep the momentum going. Don’t stay home. Check them out here.

After the Block Party winds down, many Gloucester venues will continue music into the wee hours, so there’s no reason to go home when the music on the street ends. One of my favorite bands (KBMG Electric) will be heating things up at Minglewood Tavern.
See the complete Saturday music lineup here.
“He who does not eat cheese, will go mad.”
This French proverb is printed on T Shirts and hangs over the door at The Cave — 44 Main St. For some reason, it took Vickie and me 3 weeks to get there, but we finally made it yesterday and boy are we glad we did. Then we took our bounty to a friend’s house. The best way to enjoy good food is with good friends, each being enhanced by the other. Check out the video to see what we got and how it tasted.
Laura, who owns The Cave, tells me she’s got a 3 year lease and they will be open year round. Sounds like a plan to me. Vickie and I will be in again soon.
Just as The Cave has something for every palate, tonight there’s music for every possible taste on Cape Ann from string quartet to bluegrass to rock, soul, reggae, pop, New Orleans jazz, blues, metal, singer/songwriters — you name it. Don’t stay home. Check the live music lineup and get out on the town!
