Don’t Miss Momentum Gallery, only in Gloucester for a Short Time!

  • The talented Bailey Berry, a student at Gordon College, has put together a pop-up gallery for the next few weeks. The show is curated by Bailey and is comprised entirely of works from fellow students in area colleges Endicott, Montserrat & Gordon. Originally designed to be part of an initiative in Peabody to enliven empty storefronts downtown by placing pop-up galleries and other temporary installations, Bailey had to look for alternatives for the gallery after Peabody pulled the plug on the project. She searched for a home for the Momentum Gallery and found the ideal partner in The Hive here in Gloucester. Peabody’s loss is our gain, as the project features work in a variety of media by young artists offering a fresh perspective.
    The details:
    • The show runs opens this weekend, May 25th, at 6 o’clock at The Hive on Pleasant Street. Some great music is lined up and all this music and art and energy can be experienced for just $5. Or five bux, as they say at The Hive because they are so awesome they just spell stuff phonetically.
    • Momentum Gallery will be open 10 to 5, Monday through Friday, and Saturdays by appointment through June 15th. If you would like to partner with Momentum Gallery and donate your services for either the show’s run and or closing party, contact Bailey at momentumpeabody@gmail.com. And for more information on the show itself, the gallery’s partners and blog, please check out the website: www.momentumgallery.weebly.com

Thursday night blues party at The Rhumb Line to host Evan Goodrow 5.16.2013 ~ 8-11

Thursday – Dave Sag’s Blues Party with Evan Goodrow ~ 8-11

dave sag

 Dave says,

Let’s welcome back Mr. Evan Goodreau! One of the best crowd pleasers  I know, Big E has just returned from the Bronx where he came in first place in the Annual Homie car-stripping contest, making mincemeat out of a brand new BMW in seconds flat. Be careful: he can do it to your brain, too. Evan never fails to get the pot boiling quickly, so come early.
Also, on the skins will be our very own redcoat, Mr. David Mattacks, who needs no introduction, unless you’ve been in a coma.
Thank all of you for your pained inquiries into missing emails: I had some kind of gastro-informational problem which has since cleared up with the regular  applications  of Damnitol®, the speedy world wide cobweb fixer upper. Should all be good, now.
Still on winter hours 8 to 11. Thank you for your continuing support! We would be nothing without you! And watch out for that miserable summer cold/flu thing going around. I got it and couldn’t even drink for a couple of days!

Jim Malcolm, one of Scotland’s finest traditional singers and songwriters, is bringing his award-winning music to Rockport MA in April.

Jim Malcolm, one of Scotland’s finest traditional singers and songwriters, is bringing his award-winning music to Rockport MA in April.

Malcolm, who has twice been booked to sing for Prince Charles, was voted Scotland’s Songwriter of the Year in 2004 and was shortlisted for the Scots Singer of the Year award in 2004, 2005 and 2009. He has been described as “one of the most outstanding talents to emerge from the Scottish Folk Scene in years”.

JMposterpic07[4] (1)

The concert is being organised by Elizabeth Malcolmson, who with her husband has been hearing Malcolm perform for years at house concerts and in larger venues with Old Blind Dogs, and wanted to bring the artist closer to home. “Jim combines amazing music with great stories,” said Elizabeth, “and I thought how wonderful it would be to hear him play for my family, friends and other musical enthusiasts, in my own home town.”

And Malcolm, for his part, is looking forward to playing in MA. “I love playing for American audiences, which have always been good to me,” he said. “Scottish audiences can be a bit reserved but Americans seem better at having a good time – my concerts are usually really good fun. I’m looking forward to playing in Rockport MA again.”

Malcolm, who was front man with the much-loved Old Blind Dogs for seven years, plays guitar and mouthorgan and sings songs from the Scots tradition, as well as his own award-winning compositions.

Often played on the radio show Thistle & Shamrock, Malcolm was brought up in the Perthshire and Angus areas of Scotland and was steeped in traditional music and song from a young age. He learned to play guitar while at school and by his early twenties was winning songwriting contests and playing in folk clubs all over Scotland. He later took up harmonica and is now a leading exponent of simultaneous guitar and harmonica, “displaying more talent than many who have made their living from harmonica alone,” as one critic wrote.

In December 2004 Malcolm won the coveted Songwriter of the Year title in the Scots Trad Music Awards, and he has eight solo CDs to his credit.
