Rockport Music March Hightlights – Don’t Wait — Get Your Tickets Today!
This March, Rockport Music presents performances by the Americana trio Red Molly, folk singer Crystal Bowersox and the Irish Baroque Orchestra with internationally renowned baroque violinist Monica Huggett.
On Friday, March 7 at 8 pm, the Irish Baroque Orchestra (IBO) led by internationally known Baroque violinist and Artistic Director Monica Huggett will perform a program of “Ireland’s Golden Age,” a fascinating snapshot of the musical scene in 18th century Dublin, when composers from all over Europe converged on the city seeking inspiration and patronage. Ensemble-in-residence at the National Concert Hall Dublin, the IBO perform only on Baroque instruments or modern replicas and seeks to re-create the original performance styles of the Baroque period. Known internationally as one of the foremost Baroque violinists and conductors of our time, Monica Huggett has been a tireless champion of Baroque music for the last three decades. She also serves as artistic director of the Portland Baroque Orchestra and was the inaugural artistic director of The Juilliard School’s Historical Performance Program. Her expertise in the musical and social history of the Baroque Era is unparalleled among performing musicians and the Irish Times hails that, “the IBO’s playing…was utterly delectable” and that “Huggett showed a fondness for driving into music with a sense of edginess, of danger, of adrenaline-fuelled excitement.” IBO’s “Golden Age” program includes works by Handel, Vivaldi, Geminiani, Pasquali, Turlough Carolan and many more. Tickets: $39-$58
On Saturday, March 15 at 8 pm, Americana trio Red Molly, known for their gorgeous three-part harmonies blending bluegrass with a touch of western swing, will bring audiences to their feet with crisp musicianship and warm, engaging stage presence. The band consists of Laurie MacAllister (bass, banjo), Abbie Gardner (dobro, banjo), and Molly Venter (guitar). This past year, the ladies were invited to open for music legend Willie Nelson and they performed at the venerable RockyGrass festival in Colorado. Their new CD Light in the Sky spent 20 weeks on the Americana Music Association’s Top 40 radio chart and charted as Folk DJ’s #3 Top Album of 2012. The Boston Globe hails the group’s, “tick-tight arrangements, crystalline vocals and caramel harmonies” (The Boston Globe). Tickets: $18-$32
Crystal Bowersox performs at the Shalin Liu Performance Center on Friday, March 28 at 8 pm. While best known as a beloved American Idol finalist, Crystal has since proven to be more than simply a gifted singer with soul and dreadlocks. She’s blossomed into a widely respected and strikingly independent artist and songwriter. Since her season on American Idol, Bowersox has released two new records, the most recent being the country/soul accented All That for This in 2013, which opened to widespread critical acclaim and boasted a guest duet with Jakob Dylan. This past fall, she branched out into Broadway, playing the lead role in Always, Patsy Cline. Combining her powerful and dynamic vocals with her remarkably mature songwriting, Bowersox is described as, “bluesy and soulful, with a voice incapable of artifice…” (The Washington Post). Tickets: $25-$39 (Special VIP Meet & Greet $89 including Tier 1 ticket)

This Thursday night Dennis Brennan to play Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line. 8-11- 2.13.2014
We’re joining a musical health club this week and exercising our synapses with that top ‘o the heap pied piper and malarky master, Mr. Dennis Brennan. No relation to Walter. Big D has turned out to be a favorite around these parts, causing swooning women and male consternation. He comes fully equipped with a fabulous set of pipes, a harmonica, and a repertoire so vast as to inspire nosebleeds. My favorite singer!

He’ll be backed by an all-star cast featuring Mr. Matt “Dillon” Stubbs, on catarrh, and Broomful ‘o Blues drumpeter, Mr. Chris “Craft” Rivelli, a veritable powerhouse of the Blues foundry system. Both Matt and Chris have travelled the world incessantly and extensively, spreading the word with the likes of James Cottontail, or Jerry Porntoy, or Roomful or is it somebody else? I can’t remember. But you won’t forget the incessant carnal pounding of the boogie beat as you suck down that sixth beer…. It’s gonna be a blast.! See ya there!

Dave Sag’s Blues Party tonight with Justin Quinn joining him @ The Rhumb Line 8-11~ 2.6.2014

It’s a double whammy for me this week as I get to do the do with Mr. Justin Quinn twice! That’s right, he’s my special guest this Thursday nite at the Rhumby and I get to do it again on Sunday at Glenn’s in Nbpt. Mr. Q. or “Sonny Boy III” as I refer to him is the logical extension of both Mississippi saxophonists I and II schmeared with a heavy dollop of Li’l Walter thrown in with some Jameson’s Irate Whiskey for good measure. He sings, too, whilst allowing his sidemen to vent, like Vesuvius, to the boogie beat. Beware of microbursts!

Sidemen include Mr. Jon Ross, Klonopin® King and razor-like Samurai, on catarrh and vocals, the calvous Mr. Paul Foss of Bangor, Me. , an old prison cellmate, on keyboards, Mr. Ephraim Lowell, late of Broomful of Blooze, on tintinabulators and me on base . You’ll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush your fate with Blooze-o-dent. Hours: 8 to 11.
Sunday at Glenn’s you can behave, since we start at 6pm (and go till 9), but I don’t recommend it as there will be great wailing and gnashing of teeth, or implants and veneers, since this is Nbpt. The food is great but the women are snobby, so stay home, guys, unless you have a portfolio! When you clock this town with the stopwatch of history, it’s a different record every time.
Also, for those of you who are out of the job market, The good Old Salty Jazz Band holds sway next Monday at the Rose Baker (who is she?) Senior Center here in downtown Glou. from 1 to 3, next Monday, nap time for most of you. You could bring Jell-O or Wayfarin© Come dance to the urgent hits of the 1920’s to the 1940’s with the coolest musicians in the world. We’re concussion free and a few of us still have hair!! BaDoom!

The Cape Ann Community CinemaMOVIE & MUSIC EVENT – “Psychedelic Cinema” with LIVE music by the Psychedelic Cinema
This week Johnny Carwash joins The Dave Sag’s Thursday Night Blues Party! 8 – 11pm 1.30.2014
Dave says,
First, let me thank you all for allowing me to present the good Old Salty Jazz Band last week.It was a huge success. People were weeping in the aisles. Took me two days to recover. I think i’ll do it again this summer.
Now, back to reality. This week is yet another shootout at the ofay corral as we feature two ghastly titans of instrumental guitar, Mr. Bobby Davis, old Johnny Carwash himself,
and Mr. Billy Loosigian. Last time Bobby was here, the cleanup crew were wailing and gnashing their dentures for a week. Tore the place apart. Billy has been practicing his three chords necessary for the attainment of bliss for some time now and will prove to be the perfect shiny mirror to Bob’s succinct style. Jeff Casper, the friendly drumbler, will be on hand to answer any questions. I won’t have any answers. This is going to be big fun.
Don’t forget winter hours: 8 to 11. You can get 10 to life if you’re not careful.

Chris Stovall Brown to play the Blues Party tonight @ The Rhumb Line 8-11
Thank god Chris “Stovall” Brown is coming in this Thursday nite: it’s been a while since I had to deflect a whole boatload of invective, innuendo and out the other. Chris, besides being a fabulous guitarist ,uvula-waggler, and eidetic librarian of all things recordable, is simply a joy to work with. Plus, he makes me laugh. You may wet your pants watching this guy sing whilst playing his axe with his dentures. I’m always amazed. Eardrum duties by our fallow-headed buddy, Mr. Steevee Chaggaris. I’m on base. We’re keeping this a trio so that we can flood the stage next week with the likes of the Good Old Salty Jazz Band. Sex after menopause? I can’t remember….
