This week Kathy visited the Causeway Restaurant for a bowl of their seafood chowder, her favorite. For $7, it’s a meal and a half. Highly recommended, but to avoid waiting for a table, try the off hours.

Although not native to the waters of Cape Ann, little compares to these Blue Point, Westport, CT oysters, shucked and devoured at Gloucester’s Wingaersheek Beach. Kathy recently mastered the art of shucking and showed Marty how to find the hinge to unlock the shells. She also shared them with Fred Bodin (Bodin Historic Photo) and made a video of his technique.
The oysters were purchased at Connolly Seafoods: http://www.steveconnollyseafood.com. The last frame shows the additional gifts from the sea courtesy House of the Raven: http://houseoftheraven.com

Fish on Fridays

Well, we’ve run 13 Fish on Friday posts, and that’s Kathy’s lucky number, so we are going to hang up this series until the spring. We hope you’ve enjoyed the posts and, if you take the bait, we’ll resume FOF soon.

By the way,we love Jack Lemmon (originally from Newton MA!) especially with Marilyn Monroe in Some Like it Hot. In 2000, the American Film Institute listed Some Like It Hot as the greatest American comedy film of all time.

This week we’re thinking about China. Kathy is working with Philips Auction House opening on the Back Shore next week (http:www.philipsauctionhouse.com). She came across these wonderful pictures of fishing boats from a personal vacation album dating from 1910-1920 China.

A little closer to home, Marty visited Horizon Chinese Restaurant, 4 Rogers St., Gloucester, and watched Chef James prepare mouth watering stir fried shrimp in garlic sauce and lobster in spicy chili sauce.  All seafood is fresh off the boat in Gloucester Harbor.

This week we are celebrating the cod. We photographed Connolly Seafoods’ day boats returning with cod they had hooked “the old fashion way” according to one of the fisherman.

FYI: Last week when Kathy was looking for info on salt machines she Googled “salt machines at State Fish Pier” and this is what appeared! http://scienceprogress.org/2011/04/fish-on-fridays-maximizing-the-value-of-america’s-fisheries/
Much to our surprise not only is there another column out there called Fish on Fridays, but they did a story on Gloucester’s salt machines! The online journal is: Science Progress – where science, technology and policy meet.

Fish on Fridays

Kathy and Marty spent some time at the Jodrey State Fish Pier this week to see what was going on. This week, most of the activity centered on the herring and mackerel fleet consisting of the Challenger, the Endeavour and the Voyager. The fleet’s catch is processed whole and sold frozen as food to foreign markets or as fresh, frozen or salted bait for domestic use.
There is almost always something going on at the Pier including off-loading, salting, icing or maintaining vessels and gear.

This week we photographed our native shrimp on the line at Steve Connolly Seafood. The shrimp catch is limited to Mondays and Wednesdays with nets out of the water by 2pm. Unfortunately, the season will only last a few weeks. Romeo, who purchases fish for Connolly, has some comments about his suppliers.

Shrimp season started today (Wednesday 1/23). Kathy stopped by and talked with Paul Movalli (VP Purchasing) at Intershell about the schedule. He says it’s too cold and windy to go out the next few days, the shrimp will freeze!. So by next week we should have some shrimp pictures for this blog. The season will last only a few weeks, because quotas are down.

In the meantime, here’s a picture Kathy shot on their dock. Paul writes, “The big dude is Frank Davillas an X state trooper who is now our Dock Master. The other is long time fisherman and now lobsterman Al Mineo. His boat is the Web. He’s one of the nicest guys your ever going to meet other than myself and Joey C”.

If you think it’s cold here, ask Kathy what it’s like to be out ice fishing in -24 degree wind chill and 50 mph winds across a frozen lake. A few days ago she shot these pictures in Minnesota. The ridiculously slick surface (crampons didn’t make much of a difference) and the high winds pinned her against the Jeep transportation in order to take a few snaps, camera freezing every few shots.

But Kathy says when they get the propane heaters going, it gets quite comfortable inside. Her family members suggest hot chocolate w/peppermint schnapps, a radio and a deck of cards while waiting for bites. They catch Walleye, Northern, Croppies, Sunfish and Perch. Ice thickness ranged from fourteen to twenty inches.

Today Kathy is sharing monkfish images. Romeo, the fish buyer for Connolly Seafoods,(www.steveconnollyseafood.com) is pictured at Cape Ann Seafood Exchange as he examines and comments on monkfish as the “poor man’s lobster”. Next image is a beauty shot of the wide smile. The second video is shot at Connolly, of the production line, showing the filleting and skinning of a monkfish tail.

Café Shalom at the Temple Ahavat Achim

Kathy Chapman Video-

Klezwoods, Gloucester, MA November 2012

I made it to the Temple Ahavat Achim (just around the block from where I live) on Saturday for their “CafĂ© Shalom”.  I am so glad I did – I kept saying “wow!” to myself for about half an hour after the music was over!

The first band was “The Blueberries”, consisting of Fozzie Hill, Dave Brown, and Wolf Giandes. Great folk/blues vocals and guitar!

Then came Klezwoods, a Boston klezmer band (whose leader, Joseph Kessler, is a Gloucester local).  They play a sort of fusion of traditional klezmer with jazz and other middle-eastern music.  I had no idea what this would be like. Although I expected it to be good, I was still blown away!  They play with fantastic energy and skill.  I bought their CD without hesitation about half-way through their set.

For more photos of both bands, click on the block of thumbnail images below:

Another CafĂ© Shalom is scheduled for January 12, 2013. I don’t have the name of the band(s) that will play, but there will be an announcement on GMG before the event.
