When someone wants to force the teen pregnancy story down your throat to tell you how horrible a place Gloucester is, ask them where they live.
Then when they tell you Plaineville USA, ask them if they have a Schooner Festival there.
Then ask them if they have the Horribles parade and as many fireworks displays throughout the year that we have.
Then ask them if they have a beach that compares to Good Harbor, Wingersheek or Niles.
Then ask them if they can name their neighbors that live more than one house away from them.
Then ask them if they have the number of killer little mom and pop places to eat around their town instead of the generic chains.
Then ask them how many people they recognize when they walk into the local coffee shop if they even have a local coffee shop.
Then ask them if have the Dory Races and an ability to pay $50 for yearlong use of a Grand Banks Dory with a tie up spot on the water.
Then ask them if they can launch a small boat or kayak from a public landing in their town.
Then ask them if they can walk down to just about any spot on the harbor and take pictures or enjoy a sandwich watching the boats go by.
Then ask if they have an arts community that is one tenth as strong as ours.

Hey, what do you think about this idea presented to me by lobsterman Mark Ring. He tells me that the shroud that covers the City Hall tower looks like a big green condom when he looks at it from the harbor while hauling traps.
We turn lemons into lemonade and sell naming rights for the City Hall Restoration project to Trojan Brand Condoms. They could market new big huge green condoms that look like the shroud that covers City Hall right now. We could get the expensive project completely taken care of with a few timely banner ads.
Maybe another birth control pill company might sponsor the other side and we could get the sewer project paid for too. With all the media exposure those pharmaceutical companies would surely jump at the chance at that advertising opportunity! Now that’s some outside the box thinking right there!
In case any of you are wondering, no I’m not serious.

WINDOW BOX HISTORY
Main Street’s beautiful window box flower displays have delighted residents and visitors alike since 2001.More than seventy of the window boxes that grace Gloucester’s Main Street were installed in a collaborative downtown enhancement program between 2001 and 2005. The program was initiated by William Taylor and Peter Perthou (Grant Circle Flower Fund) and was enhanced and extended by the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce and the City of Gloucester’s Community Development Department. Through this cooperative effort, window boxes were installed at Main Street businesses free of charge. Main Street merchants plant and maintain their own window boxes, expressing their own unique style – and brightening all of Main Street in the process.
