In a successor to the 50 States Quarters Program, the U.S. Mint, in a nationwide program, has asked Governor Patrick to select one preferred and three alternate Massachusetts national sites to be featured on the reverse of a quarter. Beginning in 2010, the Mint will release five new quarter designs annually based on the order in which the selected sites gained federal designation. Governor Patrick is calling on the people of Massachusetts to help with this decision.
“Our Commonwealth has many great parks and historically significant sites,” said Governor Patrick. “It will be fun to let everybody help choose the one to submit.”
One of the sites included is Gloucester’s famous Man at the Wheel Statue created by sculptor and photographer Leonard Craske. This statue not only commemorates Gloucester’s maritime heritage but also its distinguished arts history. Please visit the voting site and place a vote for Gloucester!

Thank you.

The fog was just lifting that day. I was driving back to work. I grabbed my camera and watched the picture-perfect scene unfold. I like the rippled reflections on the water.

Nine years ago today, my dad, Ed “Pee Wee” Lowe, passed away. He was a Gloucester firefighter when all the wharf fires and huge hotel fires happened. He was small, yet feisty. He had a love/hate relationship with the Red Sox, collected everything, owned the Hesperus Bottle Shop in Magnolia, and beat me in every single pingpong game we ever played. The old firemen remember him. One cool guy. This was one of his favorite prints. Sure do miss him. —-Sharon
I’d really like to thank Mike Lindberg for sending in a bunch of the photos of the Eastern Avenue house explosion. It surely helped get the story in pics out.

See this ginormous forktruck? It’s called a marina bull(thanks Toby for the correction) and instead of flat forks which we have on our forktruck to move pallets of fish and lobsters around, the marina bull has long round tubes coming off it’s front. The marina bull is also about triple the size of our forktruck so you can get an idea of the scale of it’s size. The marina bull is used to manuver smaller boats into the rack storage system at Brown’s where they store boats warehouse style in the racks (you can see Brown’s Rack storage system in front of the marina bull in this shot).
These marina pulls need to be incredibly heavy especially in the rear end so they can counterbalance the weight of the boat that will be lifted straight out in front on the long tubes. Note to Peter -you might wanna get the maintenence guy to grease up the chains.

Janice Lufkin Shea Won Georgie’s Lobster Buoy With an $85 Bid, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
You are not going to believe how much some of these buoys sold for.
Watch the video by clicking the picture below to see how much.
Forgive the terrible picture quality. I did a horrible job shooting the pictures as I was distracted all night trying to figure out how I was going to steal away the lobster buoy with the lobster on it (more on that later).
But this was the scene with each child holding up their hand painted buoy and Senator Tarr auctioning them off. I don’t know how he held his voice up for that long but he did a remarkable job. Georgie is the daughter of good eggs Dave and Erika Hansen. Erika was sitting in front of Janice Lufkin Shea and I and facing the stage. When the bidding started she had no idea that she was bidding against Janice and I who were standing right behind her while she was facing the stage. The bidding quickly escalated and when all was said and done Janice won out with an $85 bid.
The whole night was a huge success and I have to believe that they didn’t anticipate how many people showed up and actively bid. When there is a great cause our community steps up and this was certainly a great cause.
Classy broad that Janice is she gave the buoy that she had just won back to Erika.
