Anthony Gomes Smokin’ guitar @ the Blues Fest
My View of Life on the Dock
Live music starts at 6 tonight, 11 AM tomorrow & Sunday. Â You can’t get to every show so here’s the schedule to help you choose.
Tonight you can catch an unusual lineup of top musical talent in one intimate venue that you don’t see every day: Allen Estes has been quietly assembling a band of all-stars, Â including the great David Brown, Dave Mattacks and Wolf Ginandes to plug in and rock. Â Wait, you might say. Â Isn’t Allen Estes, folk, country or americana? Â Sometimes. Â But when he’s with these guys and their plugged in they ROCK! Â And that’s precisely what they’ll do at Minglewood Tavern tonight starting about 9. Â Check them out!
Tomorrow, start off at the Blues Fest (weather will clear by morning). Â Then take the party to town at any of a dozen venues at night (see here). Â Get up Sunday by 11 and check out the Rockport Acoustic Music Fest.

The weather for Saturday looks great for the Blues Festival. Â This is only in its second year and already one of Gloucester’s largest events, bringing world class blues to Stage Fort Park and introducing you to young, rising blues stars.
You really don’t want to miss this year. Â Click here for videos of all this year’s performers.
Tickets available at the Gate only and the gates open at 9am.  A special children’s ticket is available at the gate only to youngsters 6 to 12 for $5. Children under 5 admitted free.
World-class blues will reverberate through Stage Fort Park on Saturday with some of the nation’s finest performers playing from the Gloucester Blues stage. Located right on the waterfront on beautiful Cressey’s beach, the event will have a beer garden and outstanding food and craft vendors. Gates open at 9AM – MUSIC starts at 11AM Â
We try to let you know when there’s an opportunity to save money, enjoy music close to home that you can’t see every day and catch a rising star in an intimate local venue before he/she makes it big.
Next Saturday (8/10) all three come together for the Gloucester Blues Festival, BUT, if you want to save $12.00 you have to get your tickets by MONDAY at 10pm here.
Perhaps you missed last year’s premiere of the Gloucester Blues Fest. Â Click here for some videos that will give you a sense of how much fun it was.

Due to a scheduling conflict, the Blues Festival has replaced Biscuit Miller with Mr. Nick and the Dirty Tricks. Â These guys know how to rock. Â Check them out here:

This just in from Bob Hastings of the Gloucester Blues Festival:  Hailed by Alternate Roots Magazine as one of the top 20 Boston Bands Right Now, Gracie Curran & the High Falutin’ Band will open the Gloucester Blues Festival on August 10.
This April’s Noise Magazine proclaimed, “Gracie is one of the best blues divas on the local scene.” Â Bob says she’s likely to join Lydia Warren during her set. Â It’s the blues. Â Who knows what will happen. Â See videos of the rest of this year’s Blues Fest lineup in this post.
Gracie and the band won the 2013 Boston Blues Society’s Blues Challenge and is a Boston favorite.  Here’s a video them at Johnny D’s, one of my favorite places to go when I lived in Sommerville in the late ’70s / early ’80s.
Bob Hastings, co-producer of the Gloucester Blues Festival, sent me an email this morning saying they just signed Lydia Warren.  We saw her open for Savoy Brown at the Bull Run on December 1 (see post about that concert here).  Alone on stage with her strat,  she captured the crowd with her soulful vitality.  At the Blues Fest, she’ll have her full band!
From Lydia’s website:
“Changing the face of the blues”  – NBC’s Today Show
Lydia Warren tours internationally from Brooklyn to Beirut, whipping audiences into a frenzy at each stop. A versatile singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer, the Boston-based performer tours and records as a solo act and with her band. The Lydia Warren Band has been nominated for a Boston Music Award, appeared on NBC’s Today Show and has released five albums.
Complete Blues Fest Lineup (see videos of the rest of the Blues Fest linuep in this post):
Lydia Warren
Johnny Rawls
Biscuit Miller
Anthony Gomes
Anna Popovic
Tommy Castro
This just in from Bob Hastings, co-producer of the Gloucester Blues Festival. Â Excellent lineup for August 10. Â And this isn’t even everybody. Â There will be at least one more performer, so stay tuned. Â Tickets will be available April 10 on the Blues Fest website.
B.B. King Entertainer of the Year, Tommy Castro headlines:

Ana Popovic – how does she play in that dress?
Soulful Johnny Rawls
Biscuit Miller – with a name like Biscuit, you gotta be funky
Anthony Gomes – Smokin! Â You saw him yesterday. Â Here he is with Ana Popovic – again I ask, how does she play in that dress?
Bob Hastings sent me an email last night announcing the first act to be booked for this year’s Gloucester Blues Festival. Â His name is Anthony Gomes and he’s a smokin’ guitar player as you can see by the video below.
Here’s the thing: He’s not even the headliner … Whew! Â This will be a spectacular Blues Festival.
You can’t get tickets yet, but you can save the date, which is August 10 at Stage Fort Park.  Remember, you heard it here on GMG first and you can trust GMG to let you know the minute tickets  go on sale.  In case you’re one of the unfortunates who missed last year’s Blues Fest,  see some videos here.
No, you don’t want to miss this year, do you?
We promised you part 2 of Monday’s interview with Marina Evans (see part 1 here) so here it is:
You can see more Marina Evans Videos here.
Speaking of videos, perhaps you missed the Blues Festival last month. Â In case you didn’t know, we spent the day live blogging videos from the festival. Â And now we’ve organized them in one convenient place — see here. Â Below is one of my favorites by Queen of the Blues: Shemekia Copeland when she walked the crowd and sang without a mic!
If you’re looking for some more great Blues, go see Canada’s Queen of the Blues Rita Chiarelli LIVE at Cape Ann Community Cinema this Saturday at 7:30pm following a special screening of her movie Music From the Big House (see trailer below).
Here’s another video of Shemekia Copeland (Queen of the Blues) at the Gloucester Blues Festival with yet another powerful song that shows off her band as well as her remarkable voice (see yesterday’s post if you missed the song that gave me the chills).
Who’s that security guy walking in front of the stage at at about :30 seconds into the video? Â He looks so serious! You wouldn’t wanna mess with him would ya?
Just in case you missed getting Shemekia’s excellent CDs signed at the Blues Fest, you can order one here and ask her to sign it next time you see her (see tour schedule).
It’s a testament to Gloucester’s stature as a music destination that we can attract major international recording artists, the caliber of Shemekia’s Copeland, for our very first Blues Festival. Â Perhaps it’s because of the tremendously talented musicians who live here.
Don’t take them for granted.  Check Cape Ann’s live music schedule and go see them now.  Some day you may  have to drive an hour and pay a hundred bucks to see artists you can see this weekend right here on Cape Ann for free.
Shemekia Copeland’s astounding performance was the climax of Gloucester’s Blues Festival 2 weeks ago. Â We blogged all day from the festival, but never showed you any of Shemekia’s set — so here you go: Â In this video, she walks the crowd singing without a mic, while the band plays from the stage. Â Perfect mix; powerful music; gave me the chills.
We’ve had a busy month of festivals, here in Gloucester.  This weekend we’ve got 28 artists in 16 venues — two of which are schooners. And that’s just Friday & Saturday (see the Friday & Saturday live music lineup here).  You’d think it was another festival.  Nope.  Just more evidence of Cape Ann’s thriving music scene.
Start the weekend a little early with the epic Seafood Throwdown rematch today at 4pm at the Farmer’s Market at Stage Fort Park.  Then the Harbor Loop Concert — 12 live music choices in all.  See tonight’s live music lineup here.
